I bought a tin of these and so far have found 3 dented rounds and 1 actually cracked. Is this common for surplus rounds coming out of the former Warsaw Pact?

50's era Bulgarian is know for splits and loose bullets. Its not uncommon to find these in tins.

Albanian is know for dents like in your picture.

Yes, this is nothing new.

They still go bang, except that cracked one that looks like the bullet was jammed into the case causing it to split.

It's common with all surplus 54R I've seen.

I wouldn't worry about the dented ones. They're safe to shoot. The one with the crack past the shoulder isn't. (Though if they're only cracked at the neck, not into shoulder, they're fine to shoot too). Relax :)

I had a can of 1953 Bulgarian 54R, about 10% had split necks and a couple had dents too. I just picked out the bad stuff, the rest were OK.

i have that problem too. the tin i got (factory 10 1954.) was out of spec and the rims are not large enough and the slip out of the extractor.lots of cracked and dented in there too. 1950's Bulgarian seems to be the worst 54r surplus i have come across, then again i never tried Albanian. it just blaster ammo, it goes bang and you can shoot up some thing like a fax machine or a refrigerator.

Since they headspace on the rim and not the shoulder it could still be fired if it were just cracked. This one looks like the bullet has been jammed down far enough I doubt it would chamber.

At 16 cents a round, I would rather make that a conversation piece.

Here is some 1988 Albanian I had a few years ago, only bought a package of 20, didn't notice the cases until after shooting them all

I bet nothing really happened to the Mosin that fired those anyway?

And yeah, there isn't a problem with dented rounds. Even though I only had 40 rounds, I liked the Albanian stuff...
