I have a SA 1911 Loaded Champion. I'm looking for some good reliable magazines for HD. Any recommendations on good brands of magazines?

I use Colt factory 7 round and Tripp Research 7 round magazines and they work just fine.

I'm actually looking for some good quality mags as well. I have two Wilson Combat 8rnd mags that work very well, and I'm looking at getting a 10 rounder as well.

I've found it kind of depends on the gun. My ORM 1991 Colt won't feed the last round on a magazine with a dimpled follower, but it has a King's Barrel installed. My NRM 1991 works fine with Colt, Wilson, Shooting Star, Kimber, and almost any magazine I've tried. Some guns don't like the softer springs in Wilson mags and won't lock back after the last round. Some guns don't like a dimpled follower while others work fine with a dimpled follower. If you find a mag that works well in your gun, stick to that brand.

Personally, I like the Colt magazines the best, followed by the Wilson (if the gun will work with it).

thanks for the feedback. I find that one of my factory Springfield Mags also does not feed the last round as well.

This is an issue that is brought up almost as often as whether SA is better than Kimber and vice versa. ;) Everyone has their favorites. Some love Chip McCormick Powermags, some love Wilson 47Ds, some love Tripp Cobras, some swear cheaper Checkmate and GI mags work fine. It comes down to what you want to pay and what works in your gun. It seems some 1911s are finicky with magazines/ammo.

My SA Loaded Champion LW has been great with Chips, Wilsons, Springfield original (Metalform made?), and some unknown manufacture stainless 7 rounders. I default to Wilson 47D for my carry though. I have the most faith in those magazines.

thanks for the feedback everyone. One of my Springfield factory mags won't feed the last round so I'm thinking of purchasing new mags.

act-mag and mec gar, because they have followers that go into the magazines, both are made in Italy and are quality made. I like the act-mag better because it has a metal follower, mine are 8 rounders and they're cheaper than wilson combat and other mags I've seen. You can pickup a mag for about $20 on midwayusa . com

Will those wilson mags fit in SA?

They should fit in any single stack 1911, they just poke out of the bottom of the grips about a half inch.

I like Colt factory, they function well in all of the 1911's I have tried.

I use the older 8-round Wilsons and some 7-rounders as well. I have 10-round Wilsons, but never got into Limited 10, so they just sit on the shelf.

Lots of my friends have switched over to Chip McCormick Powermags.

I happen to be one person who switched to CMC Powermags. I love them. Haven't had one ftf in my SA Mil-Spec. I don't think I'll switch back to another brand.

Tripp Research Cobra 8 rounders have no equal, but they are longer than GI issue.
Then my vote goes to Wilson's as second place. All others a distant third.

On the range failures do not mean a thing. but if you plan on defense, go for the best.
If push comes to shove, Tripp's are in my Colt.

How do you all like metalform? I've been using some in .38super. Or for 9mm 1911 mags? Used some factory Colt and liked them. Little experience with other brands.

Wilson 47 8rders or the Ed Brown 8packs with bullnose followers.
Any quality mags with taper feed lips(dimpled follower) if you shoot only round nose ball ammo.

I have been using the SS Metalform 9 rounds mags for my 9mm Kimber SS Target II. They work great. I have not have issues since purchasing them about 1 -1/2 months ago. Each mag has cycled 250 to 300 rounds without any problems.

Wilson 47D, Trip 8rnds and McGormick 10rnds; They all feed .45 FMJ and Ranger HP's perfectly for my TRS and PC1911.
- I have not considered other mags and can't point to one that wouldn't work, but most seem to agree on these brands.

Do your mags have flat, convex, or dimpled followers?

I have OEM Colt mags, one Shooting Star, and two Wilsons. If you're planning on going to Angeles anytime soon (I might be there Wednesday night or Thursday) you're welcome to try my mags.

CMC Powermags and Wilson 47-D's with Tripp rebuild kits are what I use. Wilson's have been so-so for me but problem solved with the Tripp kits. Some guns just seem to not like them...some they work perfectly in.

Wilson Combat mags are awesome, but I've had better luck with Chip McCormick Power and Power + magazines. Both brands are pretty much considered the top 2, but I prefer Chip for a few reasons over Wilson.

First is that Chip uses individual holes to show round count rather than the slits for Wilson, that is an incredibly tiny gripe its just my preference. Chips 10 rounders have the plastic base on them which gives a cleaner look and something more significant to grab onto pulling them out of pouches. The Power + mags are fantastic, I've never had an issue with mine while I've had 2 with my regular Power mags (minor failure).

Another point is that on Chips Facebook page, they have Facebook specials or blow-outs on their Power + magazines that get you them for a fantastic price. That's the reason I have 15 in my collection now, you just can't beat their deals.

+ 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 I love my chip mags. just make sure if you have a aluminum frames 1911, you get the special followers from chip. I dont know of any other company that makes them other than chip. I have 4 10rd's and 4 8rd's.

I had a 47d for my Springfield and for some reason the slide would not lock up after the 8th round. Im not sure if it was out of speck or what? It worked just fine in my friends dan wesson tho, so who knows? Maybe they just dont work on Springfield's ? Anyone else here have the same problem? On a nother note, everything else I have from wilson combat worked great (extended slide release & FLGR).

ive been using act mags (i have 7 of them), but i probably wont buy them anymore. One of them got cracked feedlips after about 500rounds, and another one barely had 100 rounds through it and the magazine base just shot out of it. I must have just gotten a couple of bad ones, because the other 5 work just fine.

That is normal for some guns. The Wilson magazines use a very lightweight follower spring and sometimes do not have enough spring pressure to push the slide lock into position on the last round. You can try switching the spring or having a smith tune your slide lock to get it to work with those mags.

I would try out a few different brands first before deciding to buy. I prefer the ACT/Novak Mags because they work good, have a nice finish, and metal followers that wont gouge your frame. I also like the Wilson Combats. I did have some trouble with the Colt and Tripp Magazines.

Good point. I'll give a few other mags a try. If it's still a problem, I'll have to utilize Springfield Armory's lifetime warranty.
