I just picked up a 19-4, 4" blue from a cop. It was his duty gun from 80-85 or so. I think I got a good deal on it. I am not much of a revolver guy and my knowledge of "P&R, Pre-lock" Smiths is not very good. I have a few questions that I would like to dialog via PM. Doing it in the forum tends to get a bunch of postings that have nothing to do with the subject at hand.

If you are a Smith guy and can handle what is probably a bunch newbie questions please let me know that you will help out.

Questions have to do with:

The trigger and hammer work that has supposedly been done.
The "issues" of .357 rounds cracking the forcing cone.
Ammo for this gun in general
Keeping the 19-4 or dumping it.

Thank you.

If you'd like conformation or a 2nd opinion, drop me a PM

I started in LE back in the day of the revolver and the M19 was very popular among my co-workers

And often times brings up valid points. Ignore the crap & take what ya need.

The "issues" of .357 rounds cracking the forcing cone.

These issues started to be noticed when handloaders started putting huge charges of slow powder under a light (110 - 125gr) bullet. Lots of discussion on it. Google is your friend. These issues will surface in other guns with these hyper velocity loads.
Generally the K frame doesn't like a steady diet of full house magnum loads. I think it was Bill Jordan who said ".38s for practice, magnums for business."
Ammo for this gun in general
See above.

Keeping the 19-4 or dumping it.

M19 are highly sought after. If ya wanna dump it, tho... NOW is the time to use the PM function.;)

Thank you.[/QUOTE]

Model 19 4"..ahhhh

Great handgun....38spl's for general shooting and save the magnums for serious social work and it should last a lifetime +, at least mine has.
Experiment with some different stocks (aka grips) I've tried Mustang, Pachymar and finally settled on Hogue Mono grips. Enjoy your 19!
