I'm looking to have some work done on a few handguns mostly 1911s. Any recommendations in the Los Angeles or Orange County are. Much appreciated.

Bolsa Gunsmithing (http://www.bolsagunsmithing.com/EMPLOYEES.html) in Westminster I hear is pretty good. From their website it appears that they have a pistolsmith but I've never had any work done there on a handgun.

No experience with Hoag, O'Hara nor JV but I fully concur on Alan Tanaka at AT Customs, he's overbooked but he's a great smith and hell of a nice guy. He does his own machining and his shop is fully equipped to do pretty much any machine work on the gun. If you need any work done on 1911 or S&W revolvers, you should look him up.

And on the Bolsa Gunsmith... not going back again.

+1 on Alan Tanaka- 310-327-2721

He has worked on my 1911's and my S&W revolver. 100% satisfied each time.

Just picked up my revolver a few weeks ago and it it is sweet! He will do the work you need and won't upsell.

If you just want some minor work done, Bain and Davis in San Gabriel is great. If you want a custom build, find a specialist pure 1911 smith.

Stay away from Bolsa. They can't even instead a pistol sight right.

How about refinishing work on 1911 slide and frame in Los Angeles? I've got a black stainless Springfield that the black is rubbing off and I'm looking for options to refinish it. I don't have the first clue as to what my options are and how much it'll cost to refinish 1911.

Not to bag on Tanaka-seems to be tops for revolver work-
But there is no other gunsmith in L.A. better with 1911's than Jim Hoag.

He is one of the legends when it comes to 1911's-if you want a piece that appreciates after custom work, there is no doubt your looking at Hoag.

You can take your piece shooting anywhere in the U.S. and mention its a Hoag, people will actually know who you're talking about.

+4 for Will O'Hara- that's how many 1911s he's worked on for me and I would not waste my time anywhere else. His custom work is amazing and after spending some time with him you will find yourself much more educated about 1911s in general, and have an educated eye for the little things most people miss.

Oh, and someone above was asking about refinishing- Will does in house Black Oxide (bluing) and can send out for hardchroming, DLC coating (IonBond), etc...

I recently discovered a first rate gunsmith relatively new to the area. Daniel R. Brestoff, goes by the business name of Daniel’s Gunsmithing. He is located in Santa Clarita at 26340 Ruether Ave. Santa Clarita, 91350 661 298-4800. I have used him twice so far both for issues involving sight work. I am very pleased with his work, turnaround time and pricing. His shop is first rate, well organized and equipped. I certainly have no hesitation in recommending his work. I know he has done quite a bit of work for the folks at Oak Tree, and they are totally satisfied. If you are anywhere in the North LA County area, stop by and check out his shop.

Is will ohara backed up?

I don't think so. I dropped off my TRS for new sights and a magwell blend a couple weeks ago. He said he would have it done just after the first of the year. About 3-4 weeks for mine is what I'm expecting. This is my first experience with him.

He really is a nice guy. NOTHING like what I was expecting! I was thinking a ruddy, old Irishman. What I got when I walked up was a Hispanic dude talking in Spanish only! Just yanking my chain was all. Totally relaxed guy that likes to talk. He works out of his garage but has everything needed to get the job done.

I'll do a full review when I get my piece back.

Bolsa blows. Go to a better more 1911ish place. Also consider hours unless it has changed Bolsa is only open like M-Fri 9-5 type hours.
