View Full Version : Federal .22 550 Bulk Pack (Walmart)

For those of us using AR .22's you know what Federal has done with the Bulk .22.
It's very inconsistant and unreliable. Several duds are being sent out.
I have written Federal 3 times in the past two years.
It wasn't always that way. I used to recommend Fed Bulk. Now it has become a joke across several boards.
I stated to Federal that I will suggest a boycott on Federal .22 Bulk Pack. Maybe if it doesn't sell, they will take a look.
No real reason to buy it anyhow. It's crap.

out of the 3000+ rounds i'v only had maybe about 10 that FTF. all were bought and shot this year. as far as i can tell the seem pretty reliable and are priced really good.

I run bricks and bricks of that through my 10-22 with little to no problems

Use to buy it all the time, but it has been Junk for awhile.
I buy the CCI Mini-Mags, Win. 333 Bulk, and Auto Match, all shoot great

I hope so too, spread the word. Boycott Federal bulk packs at Walmarts, especially at the Carson location.

Oh crap, now you tell me! I have recently accumulated 20,000 rounds of this stuff. Well, I guess I can join the boycott for a year or so.

Seriously, I've had no trouble at all with the Federal bulk packs. Sorry you've had different results.

I haven't had very many problems with the Federal bulk packs. A couple failure to fire's here and there, but I haven't had any problems with feeding them, and once I rechamber the round for the pin to strike a different location, it always goes off.

I don't think I'll be boycotting them, as they make a better bulk rimfire cartridge than Remington or Winchester. The other brands are a bit more expensive.

Federal has been pretty responsive with complaints from threads I have read off of RimfireCentral.com. Not too long back some guys were having issues with some ammo and they were able to send it back and get it replaced with interest.

ive never really had issues with federal bulk, plus the other brands get expensive, although that new CCI Tactical made for .22 AR's isnt priced too badly at 1500 for 100 bucks

This sure is news to me.

For bulk .22 ammunition, the group that I shoot with think it's pretty darn good. Sure, we've all had a few squibs and a couple of fliers, but it's bulk ammo - not match grade stuff or even comparable to the quality of a CCI Mini Mag --- and it sure beats the heck out of the Remington crap.

You base your boycott on the ammunition not working in your AR-based .22s - perhaps these weapons simply don't like Federal Bulk Pack? My Sig 522, GSG-5, 10-22, GSG 1911 and two Ruger Mk IIs all eat the stuff like candy.

One shouldn't expect the performance of a GT40 MkII out of their Chevy Cavalier, anyway. Maybe you guys just got a bad batch. It happens.

That was exactly my thought process too. I have been using Federal blue box bulk ammo for years out of my Marlin 60, a Ruger 10/22, a Stevens (forgot the model number), and more recently my GSG5 SD. I have had less FTF's (fire and feed), FTE's, or damaged rounds with the Federals than anything else (in bulk) my entire family has shot. The only thing that compared to them was the new red box Winchesters, to be honest. Sorry to hear about you having problems with them. If you don't want them anymore, I would be glad to take whatever you have left off your hands for you.

And include 'None, I like it' in the poll.

What I am finding is mixed. Some have a lot of issues Some have none, which is even more baffling.
I din't think I made myself clear on the main issue for me.

I'm not stating they don't ignite. I realize any bulk pack will have some of those. I realize bulk ammo isn't the most accurate.

What my main complaint is, the inconsistant loads which lead to failures to cycle and inaccuracy. 20% of the Fed I have shot in the last couple of years go sub sonic, meaning they have less powder than the other 80%.
I've had some that sound like they barely push the round out of the barrel. And that has been consistant through many boxes.
That has nothing to do with what set up they are fired from.

This may well be an issue with your gun as much as the ammo. Have you tried using a lighter recoil spring?

I shoot tons of Federal bulk pack from walmart through a variety of pistols (Rugers, S&W 41, Walther, Ciener 1911 kit) and revolvers and it is great. It is not 'competition grade' ammo, but is very reliable for plinking and general fun.

I think like anything else, they're most likely starting to cut quality control corners at the factory in order to keep the pricing as low as possible to compete with the Reminton bulk packs pricing. These days if you want accuracy bullk .22LR is not the place to go. Me, i have about 6K rounds of Federal and it run my old S&W target pistol and my .22LR conversion kits on the ARs just fine. There's always the occasional FTF, but if they fire, they always cycle my guns. I agree you should have a third option for "quality is acceptable based on cost".

12-13-2010, 7:59 AM
Sorry, I couldn't vote for any of the above.
As far as I can reall, in last couple of years I've only had a less than a handful of problem with the Federal bulk ammo due to the ammo issue compaired to dozens of times when Remington and Winchester ammo let me down (yes I've shot them in different guns).

I would rather shoot Mini Mags which have been 99.9% reliable but as a low cost alternative, Federal bulk has been pretty decent.

Wally World sells Federal 550 bulk packs. I don't care for it.

Many other online vendors, such as Cabela's sell Federal 525 bulk pack. I've had great luck with it in my .22lr semi-auto's.

So calling for a Federal 22lr bulk pack boycott without even noting there is two different bulk pack products seems premature. And posting a poll with choices that only confirm your opinion of the product and don't allow for people to disagree...well to quote Joe Dirt "That's not professional".

Have not noticed said issues with either Fed 550 or Fed 525 BP's, both of which I have stockpiled. Granted, I don't shoot them for accuracy--I simply blast them through my TacSol AR-22 and Browning Buckmark. For that, it's been great.

I have ran several THOUSAND rounds of Fed 550 Bulk Pack from Walmart and NEVER had a round that would not go BANG out of my Spikes ST-22.

Rem Golden Bullets DO NOT even cycle!!!

I have bought all my ammo pre-Obama if that helps your "unscientific" poll results.

Accuracy in Fed Bulk is not so great but it is bulk pack plinkin ammo that USED to be butt cheap... so what do you expect?

Yeah, OP's poll is biased - I wanted to say - It's just fine. Feeds in my Glenfield 60 just fine. Probably 0.5% FTL, occasional (1 out of 300?) FTF (primer). Just eject and move on.

Remington - OMG, what crap. 10% FTL. That leaded stuff is awful.

The last time I shot a box of Federal, I think I had 2 misfires at most. Loaded them back up, they fired off. Before that, I had a box of Remington. They had all sorts of problems - Bullets jammed crooked into the case, some cases were just plain EMPTY, I even had a case with a HOLE in the side of it! Seems like a fairy tale and unrealistic, but it is the truth. I will stick with my Federal's. Hell, I use Federal's in my 12 gauge, my 8mm Mauser, my .270, and my .30-06 as well. I love 'em. Only guns that don't see Federal's are my .223's (PMC X-Tac), my AK-47 (Golden Tiger), and my 1911 (Wolf and Cor-Bon)

Running through my 10/22, I don't get FTFs so much, but accuracy is horrible. That rifle is usually a tac driver, but with the Federal bulk ammo, hits are literally all over the target.

I have about 90% of a box left that I'd give away if someone wants it.

Different rifles/pistols like different ammo. My Marlin 60 loves it, Savage BTVS shoots it like a shotgun, S&W 22A shoots it well, my CZ ho-hum, my Zastava Z5 some good some bad. Just the way it is in .22s. California boycotting Federal 22 ammo won't change a thing. Too many folks like this ammo. Wait till Feb 2011 and you probably won't be able to get it anyway (hope we still can) unless you want to drive to Arizona or Nevada .

Ok, what I am finding out is the problem ammo appears to have been produced during the ammo scare a couple years back. I had several boxes of it. Looks like a lot of others did too.
From information I am getting, the new production is doing alright.
My 2 year old stuff does alright.
So at least it's getting narrowed down.
Great news for me as well as every shooter who wants less expensive ammo.

I agree, I jumped the gun. I was frustrated with Federal's lack of response. It's still odd that some have had many problems while other report very few. And it's the same complaint. Weak loads.
The ammo scare when Obama was elected and panic buying followed. Funny thing is, we caused the shortage ourselves and raised prices. Democrats didn't have to do anything.

Federal bulk packs are the only ammo I have been buying for the last year because it's the only stuff that works great in all my .22's. My second choice would be Win 333/555's. If I can't find either of those two types, I don't buy .22 ammo.

I bought all my fed bulk packs from Cabelas (blue box). Maybe they had sent out a bad batch of ammo. I've had my rounds for almost a year and haven't had those problems.

Only stuff I've had problems with is Rem. Some day I will try Mini mags but think I did once, don't remember now. I will continue buying Fed bulk packs though but I have enough ammo for probablly at least a year.

The Federal .22 Bulk has always worked great in all my guns. The round nose feeds well in everything including my Velocity .22 upper for my AR-15. Interestingly, Winchester with the cone shaped nose doesn't feed well in my Savage bolt .22.

At the range I shoot there is a trap range next to the pistol steel range so plenty of broken clays on the ground at about 50 yards. Using my scoped Savage I pick a piece and blast it. If I do my part the rifle and Federal ammo never misses. I can't complain about the accuracy of Federal at all.

I know people have suggested that it might be your gun or just a bad batch, but have you considered it might be a storage issue? Are these really old rounds? Or maybe some exposed to too much moisture? Just a thought.

Sorry, but I would never boycott 'em. Good luck finding an ammo that suits you better.

I have 2 10/22's and they shoot the bulk packs fine. Not the most accurate and the occasional jam but you get what you pay for. At $17 a box I'm not complaining. Jams more with my p22 but who cares, this ammo is plinking ammo. Jams are due to the hollow points. Winchester 333 and wildcat bulk packs jam alot in my .22's. I've noticed that it is due to the larger hollow point cavity. Fed auto match bulk packs work great in all of my .22's.
