I took delivery of an Arisaka Type 38 today.

And thus completes my WWII main battle rifle collection; version I. In that I have an example from each of the major players: American, Japanese, German, Russian, & British. Additionally I have examples from some of the minor players: Swiss K31, Spanish Mauser M43, Austrian Steyr M95.

And on a more somber note: In remembrance of those who lived and died on December 7th, 1941 and all the days thereafter through that great war that shaped the world I, and most of you reading, were born into - I dedicate this collection as an effort to preserve their memories and deeds.

It's shootable and then some. It is in excellent condition. The rifling is sharp. There is some frosting in the grooves. But overall I am very pleased.

blasphemy! you should have gotten a garand at your door on pearl harbor day!!

j/k, nice rifle! but you really do need an 03a3 in that lineup. the m1 carbine doesnt fit the lineup, nice as it is. not detracting from your fine collection :)

god bless america, may our boys in hawaii rest in peace.

Nice!

Warning: Those things multiply. I started with one. Just one. Now I have to shove the door of my safe closed. I even took out the interior to make room. Am I complaining? Nah. Just a warning. :D

Thanks for the kind words, all.

To answer some questions: You are right that the M1 Carbine is the odd one out. Trust me, if I could have gotten a Garand in the same box I would have. But I think it was actually more appropriate that I received something Japanese on December 7th. After all, we as a nation received a big surprise from the Japanese on that day in '41. And I agree that an 03A3 would be a perfect fit in the lineup. It's on my list ;-)

And boy do I know about the affliction; those pix show maybe half of what I have so far. Arisakas proliferate faster than any of them. There was actually a barreled receiver in the box with it :-| And I have two more Type 38s that I bought sporterized and two Type 99s that are in need of stocks.

To answer Rojocorsa's question about the mum: no, the mum is ground on this one, which is unfortunate. But you can't have it all, I guess. Several of my others do have complete mums, but they aren't complete rifles or are sporterized.

Also, it is nice to know that I'm not the only one who has to force the safe door closed :D It's time to get an additional safe :43:

Nice rifle. I've got a 38 and a 99. I continue to be surprised at how good these rifles are consdering how reasonably priced they continue to be. Both of mine are numbers matching, but the 99 is the only one with a full mum.

Very nice collection. You must get a Garand in there in order to remind those other rifles who kicked their butts and which truly is the finest battle implement ever devised!

Where did you find that Arisaka? Private party or a surplus dealer somewhere?

Getting a Japanese rifle on Dec 7 seems so wrong...

varget would make a decent load in 6.5jap. i use BL(C)/2 for most of my milsurps, but varget is every bit as versatile. they each have unique characteristics in different milsurp calibers. can't really screw up though. i've got a 38 carbine and a type 99 with a hammered stock, mismatched, ground mum, and the nicest bore i've ever seen, lol. people are amazed it even shoots, but despite it's looks, it shoots extremely well. only put about 20rds through the 38 so far and haven't even used up the factory ammo so i haven't done much with loads yet. definitely would load different with a carbine compared to the 38 long rifle. it's like 10 inches difference in barrel length! anyhow, nice collection and nice type 38, enjoy her!

I agree. I shot a Garand as a youngster back in the day. My High School buddy was the JROTC squad leader and US Army pre-enlistment recruit. The USAR armory was more than happy to let him check out a Garand and a 500 rnd ammo box whenever he wanted for training and practice. He would pick me up on the way to the range and we would empty the ammo box in a couple of hours. What a great rifle! I've loved them ever since. It is the final, crowning piece that I will add to the collection.

I got the Arisaka from an AuctionArms auction. Global Firearms was the seller and I recommend them.

Regarding the Carcano: What, was Italy a player in WWII? j/k :D You are right. I thought about it after I created this post. At some point I will add a Carcano :)
