I've recently developed a great interest in getting one of these things.

The big issue, is it legal to own in CA? Id imagine so being an older gun.

They are certainly pretty expensive. The cheapest I've seen one for so far is $2200 and as high as $5000 based on quality.

Perfectly legal to own in California. Very expensive and fakes abound. Norinco (China) has a clone version that you can find for much less if you just want the look and function of the original. I was really set on getting a Norinco clone, and even acquired an original bayonet to go on the end, but then the Norinco ban went into effect and they dried up. Now the ban is over and more might be coming in.

Awesome. I'm really looking forward to getting one. While the Norinco is probably cheaper, there is just something about owning an original Winchester that is much more desirable.

If I can manage financially I'm going for a Winchester.

When did that ban end? And is the one with Russia ever due to sunset?

The Norinco ban only lasted from 2003 to 2005. It was just a ban on that company because they violated some laws. The 1994 ban on "munitions" from China is still in effect, but "sporting" shotguns and black powder firearms are exempted from the definition of "munitions".

The trade agreement with Russia is not due to sunset.

ah thats right shotguns are somewhat exempt, I was gonna be pissed that my recently bought a Nork 1911 would lose value as I paid a premium for it considering its off roster + banned.

How much does a repro cost? Are they reliable? And most importantly where can I get one?

Bud's Gun Shop shows the IAC (Norinco) trench gun at $366 with free shipping. I don't know what local FFLs are marking them up to though. My girlfriend owns one of the cowboy style Norinco M97 shotguns that were on the market nine years ago and it works great.

Do these Norinco copies include the lack of a trigger disconnect?

the IAC is Norinco and they run great / i have 2 originals and an IAC (importer) Norinco and they see regular use in cowboy matches

they are faithful to the originals / won't fire OOB YET will empty their mags fast if you hold the trigger down and cycle the slide FAST

Nice. I may just settle for something like that. I'd love an original Winchester but they're way out of my price range.

I have one of the Norinco 97 Shotguns. I love it. Kicks like a mule when I first shot it. I even got the bayonet for it. So..Zombie shot gun plus really long WW1 enfield bayonet = No more zombies when I run out of ammo :D

Always wanted one myself.
I looked into building a repro from one of the modern knockoff's and found that the biggest hurdle would be the shroud/bayo lug. There's a company that makes a modern reproduction but it's >$100. Then you need to make sure that the modern shotty has the proper length barrel. It's not 18.5" like most commercial barrels but 20" or something like that.

Little known fact, Remington made a ton of "trench guns" for military and police contracts as well. Not nearly so many as Win but quite a few. I think they even had a wooden handguard.

Do these Norinco copies include the lack of a trigger disconnect?
Excellent question.

I've owned 3 original 97 riot guns over the years and all had problems with funtioning. These guns are intricate and when well used and worn develop problems. My recommendation for a shooter is to get one of the modern reproductions. You will be shooting more and repairing less going this route.

i have one for sale right now. it's the real deal. mfg date is either late 1910 or very early 1911. has all orig parts. in good shape, the wood stock towards the bottom has some of the shine rubbed off from other guns going in and out of the safe. the version i have is the "riot gun". this one was issued to either police, or the prision system. all numbers match, and has the police armor insp stamps. it doesn't have the sling stuff or holes or anything which it's not supposed to with this model. i'm located in the east bay, ca pm me if your intrested. sorry for the qualiy of the pics, it's with my camera phone.

What's funny as hell, here, in fort stewart,ga. They have the norinco 97t for sale at the PX. Chinese made gun for sale at an army installation. For all those people who won't buy because its a 'commie' gun, well its good enough for the army to sell on its base and in its stores its ok.
