Is the SKS adjustable stock (http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=47&t=359108) legal in CA? I think it is but just want to double check before I buy one.

Yes its legal, the sks has a fixed magazine. I'm still unsure whether you have to play the 922(r) game. Pretty sure you do since you would be taking it out of its C&R status.

Yea, just did some reading about the 922 thing. Looks like the only hard part is finding a good made in the USA fixed magazine, follower, and plate.

If anyone knows of a good made in the USA fixed mag please let me know, the other parts are easy to find.

I have heard several times that the various US-mfgd "compliance part" magazines for SKS are not reliable.

Stick with the regular SKS, the dress-up doesn't buy you anything.

Curiously, if your original sks stock breaks, do you have to play the 922r game if you want to install a replacement?

Not if you replace it with another original style stock. You can also replace it with a Monte Carlo, as the BATF has approved that design as having a "sporting" purpose. I actually kinda like the ATI Monte Carlo stock on mine, although it was a pain to get on there correctly.

I tried one of those and never got it to work correctly. Ended up getting rid of it.

I've been seriously looking at the ATI stock for my Yugo SKS. What kind of problems did you run into with yours? I think it would make a great all around camping and jeep rifle.

Well, I think just about everyone has major problems with replacing the wood on the top handguard with the polymer handguard that comes with the kit. I nearly destroyed the metal and push pin area trying to get it off. Now, bear in mind that this was my first real rifle work, so it may not have really been as hard as it seemed. But, I've had folks at the range comment that they never could get their polymer handguard to fit on theirs.

Then it took a lot of force to get the polymer stock to fit in around the receiver. But that's kind of to be expected. I didn't use any tools; if you have a rubber or rawhide mallet, it would probably be pretty easy on that stage.
