You'll appreciate the necessity of the USGI stock after a few more. ;) But I do love the condition of your rifle that you posted. Walnut or birch?

$1100 per diem? A salute is in order, because surely only four-star generals receive such an exorbitant per diem - necessary for entertaining heads of state, etc., I'm sure ;-)

To the OP and your new Garand: I am too jealous for words :-|

Yeah, I figured as much - I've had some pretty sweet per diems in my time ;-)

Congrats, thanks for your service, and Happy Thanksgiving ;-)

I'm still waiting on mine from 11/1 (HRA SG). Even though I'm a previous CMP customer, I got flagged in the NICS check. They are sorting it out now, but stuck in red tape... :-( And no, I'm not a criminal. LOL

Your stock is a new CMP birch stock. Nothing "crappy" about it. Here's the opinion of someone who won SECNAV (Secretary of the Navy) Trophies in competition, posted on the CMP forum:

Yeah, I got "a thought" about CMP birch stocks .... when are they going to be offered separately for sale?

All of my Navy Mk2-1 rifles (those that were issued to me and also those won as SECNAV Trophies) had birch stocks, and it is my observation that the birch stocks are denser and hold up better than walnut for recoil, counter-recoil and clamping surfaces. This is not based on any scientific testing, just an observation from many, many years of use of both.

Walnut is prettier, birch seems more stable and durable. When it comes time to build another JCG-legal rifle, I would want a NOS GI birch stock, or a new CMP repro, if they are cut to be as tight as the GI ones that I have exeperience with. JMHO, YMMV.

Personally I absolutly hate the ugly brown stained birch stocks. I took a chance and put a sticky note asking for USGI and got the birch.
I wish they would offer the commercial walnut stock as option for more $$$ or sell them without any wood at all

They had Rack Grade Winchesters without any wood for awhile. Check the net and you can probably find USGI stocks.

Yup ,just wish they would have a stock option on the Service Grades. I have a stash of USGI stocks but am saving them for a rainy day;)

USGI stocks used to be plentiful and cheap, just bought them and put them back over the years. I have used them all but a few stashed back

FedX delivers on Thanksgiving?

Nice looking rifle. Nothing like a new CMP M1 I always say.

I've had both kinds of stocks USGI wood and CMP birch. They're both good. Yes the new wood comes with an ugly brown stain. But it's easy to change that. You're gonna refinish that new stock anyway.

Thanks guys. Taking it apart now to clean/melt all the cosmo off and apply BLO and tung.

FedX delivers on Thanksgiving?

I had a special arrangement with them since they had issues not honoring the Fedex Priority overnight service (it was delayed). So they delivered off hours for me at no extra charge. Pretty damn good service!

im thinking of getting a norinco trench gun with my 1100$ per diem pay.
sorry dont wanna take over your thread

The Chinese clone Winchester 1897 Trench Guns are are great. Mine was a little rough until it broke in , but all it took was a couple boxes of Walmart birdshot.
