Hi all. I'm looking to get a semi-auto .22LR and need some advice as i know very little about them. Right now I'm looking at the following options.

Ruger 10/22 (add bull barrel, lighten trigger and add larger stock)
Remington 597 (have no idea what it needs, but heard they're good as is?)
Velocity Arms .22LR upper + Plumcrazy lower ($500 total)

My main concerns are keeping the total cost at or under $500 and accuracy, I don't really care about tacti-cool but i do have two ARs already so I like and am familiar with the platform. Everyone seems to have a ruger so there's a lot of options there, and finally the Remington has great reviews and doesn't need much from what i heard. I don't want to spend more than $500 total including all the upgrades (minus optics).

sooo, what are your suggestions?

I believe Velocity Arms = Hesse/Vulcan/Blackthorne which = bad.

I might be wrong though.

I would either get a 10/22, or get a CMMG or Spikes .22LR upper.

a quick search on Velocity Arms says they're not Hesse/Vulcan/Blackthorne

But what's more accurate, a $500 Ruger or a $500 .22LR AR? I'm hoping when it's time to teach my son to shoot, this will be the rifle he learns on. Plus i wanna take it to an appleseed. :D

Here is another option. Qualilty and accuracy right out of the box. CZs are legendary for both. http://www.kilwell.co.nz/Images/Product%20Reviews/CZ512SemiAuto22LR.pdf

Within your price range, I think, maybe a little over.

What about a Smith & Wesson 15-22?

Also, if you get a Marlin 795 (which I also have), that would actually be a lot cheaper. Those rifles can shoot very well right out of the box.

I'm not sure you even need to make those changes to the 10/22 since it shoots pretty well as is.

Rem 597 VTR on sale at turners $269.99 for Black Friday. add in a Volquartsen hammer and extractor and a little tuning and you should be happy.

Oh wow, that sounds like a good deal. But I just agreed to buy a M&P 15-22 last night with extra mags and sights for 400... reviews could be down in the 1.5moa with the right ammo.

Turners had new mp 15-22's for $399 i believe, awesome rifles, i am actually getting a mossberg 702 tactical myself, more for a plinking gun than accuracy though.

The plumcrazy lower may have issues with a .22 upper. I went to their website and did a fair amount of online research on forums where people used the Plumcrazy with various uppers and the consensus was that everyone was pleasantly surprised at how well they worked with all manner of uppers except .22. I have the velocity dedicated .22 upper and it works very nicely and I have no regrets. Here is my story about it: http://shooterdude.info/building-a-california-compliant-ar-15-step-5-finished/
