just made this today and it works great, think it cost about 40 bucks maybe for everything, works better than the old brake/carb cleaner and a tooth brush method i did before. after most of it drips off you just wipe it down with a paper towel.

Cool! Looks way more efficient than the toothbrush method.

Sweet rig!
I use a heat gun myself....but your method allows me to hold a beer in each hand...:p

My Egyptian kit was just as caked in Cosmo. More than I have had on any other kit.
You're invention works well.
Any specs on the lamps used, and what does it smell like when working?
Enough to wake the neighbors or tolerable from a distance?

there two regular light plugs that came with ceramic fixtures, the ends screw off so you can make a hole, put the socket through and re screw the tip back on to synch it down tight, the lights are just 2 200 watt bulbs and is all wired up with an old extension cord.

the smell isnt bad, at least i dont think so, the gf think it stinks but shes a girl lol, but it pretty much stays in the garage dont thing its bad enough to wake anyone up

Very creative, I just take my parts to work and toss them in the parts washer.

I'm gunna have to FWD this to my brother. He's been talking about making one for years. When you have 10+ rifles to do, everything done by hand doesn't sound so fun.

ya it would defiantly save him some time it would be hell to do them all by hand with a tooth brush lol

Plus, your looks so space age in the first picture.

The Surplusrifle pics look like Oscar the Grouch will be rollin' up on ya when least expected.

Confirming it's a combined 400W? What temps are you seeing?

yes its 400w im not sure of the exact temp but it gets really hot with the lid placed on it, i might replace one of the 200w bulbs with a 100w. not to sure yet have to use it a little longer. i changed where the thermometer was because i was worried it was reading the metal temperature and not the air temp ill post back with some temps either later tonight or tomorrow, i have a few more parts to bake

Perfect. You addressed one of my concerns. Hate to make it more complicated, but air circulation is kinda needed for accurately measuring air temp. Might be better off using an IR temp reader off of the parts. Spot checking temps over a period of time.

Thats an awesome idea, what kind of temps are you getting in there? Thinking of stealing your idea and making one of these for my garage to use for guns/car parts.

sorry for the delay ill go buy one when im in town i thing i broke the one i had in there originally. i set it on a piece of wood inside so it would read the air temp and when i came back to clean up some of the parts i bumped it with my arm and dropped it lol, that little fu*ker was hot

i just used it one 3 sten mags i had covered in cosmoline. forgot i had it on and when i pulled the lid off the temp said it was above 200 degrees before i broke the thermometer. going to go but a cheep ir one soon ill post the part temps

where did you get the metal trashcan from? I've been looking for one to bake some guns to refinish.

I just bought an old bayonet from CMP to match up with my M-1 Garand. It was covered in Cosmoline like the rifle. I think I'm gonna have to try this in my garage.

Thanks for the idea!

I use the natural sun light from the 100+ deg heat here in So. Cal. Separate the barrel receiver from the stock and place them on newpapers with the muzzle down. Wipe periodically. Sometimes when the sun is not hot enough, I will cover them with black trash bag.

Down side is that it's pretty seasonal.

ya it gets pretty hot here in central cal to, but like you said it is seasonal and the trash can actual heats up really quick with the 2 200 watt bulbs im using. honestly its already paid for its self just on the 3 sten mags alone i just did. would have cost me about 40 bucks in brake cleaner considering how bad they were covered, saved me a hell of alot of time to.

Dude, that is WECSOG at it's finest. I loathe Cosmoline and all its brothers, and this is a cheap way to take care it.
