I finally got some work done on my "Mosunov" project and thought you all might be interested to watch it take shape. This is the rough shape prototype and I plan to have this stock recreated in brown wood laminate.

Looks pretty badass with my 10 rounder on it.

Yup, I bought a PSL stock and modified it. Be sure to check out the blog link for more details. There's a pic showing the stuff I changed.

I got my Finn M39 action in the mail today and fit it into the M44 stock. Only took a little bit of wood shaving to get it in there but it fits nice and snug now. I knew this was going to be a long rifle but damn!...this thing is a fishing pole. I love the silhouette of it with the long barrel though.

I did a rough fit of the Dragunov butt plate onto the new stock. One cool thing about the Drag stock is that I also get a spring-loaded recoil absorber out of the deal.

Started building my "copycarver" which I'll use to reproduce the stock into a piece of solid wood, then eventually laminate wood.

http://www.datamancer.net/pics/copycarver1.jpg

Here's the base on which the router "shuttle" will rest. The base is adjustable to about 12" in height so I can work on larger pieces like curved table legs, scrolls, corbels, etc. I've started working on the router shuttle as well and should have some pics in a few days. I picked up a Craftsman 1.5 HP router for about $20 on Craigslist ($120 retail) and have already stripped off the extraneous crap like the handles and guards.

I revised the angle slightly on the butt stock which gives a much nicer line-of-sight down the barrel and gives a better cheek weld. All it took was sawing the stock off and grinding one side down to give an extra 2-3 degrees of angle which translated to an inch or two of drop at the rear of the stock. I also took a little material off to shorten the gap between the handle and the trigger. It was ever-so-slightly too long and the trigger didn't sit comfortably on the trigger finger. Unfortunately, I've just killed any chance of being able to use this mockup stock to actually fire any rounds, but it'll still serve well as a master shape for the copy-carver.

http://www.datamancer.net/blog/images/mosunov-revisedweld1.jpg

http://www.datamancer.net/blog/images/mosunov-revisedweld-silhouette.jpg

I also started fitting the Finn nosecap band to the m44 stock, which you can see in the second pic. I might do something neat with the bayonet tab, but haven't decided yet. Maybe a small flashlight or something (think "trail flashlight" not "tactical flashlight". Nobody's going to be 'slicing the pie' with this friggin fishing pole of a rifle any time soon). Maybe I'll come up with some kind of bipod attachment for it, too.
Anyone have some hi-res pics of a Finn M39 bayonet that I could look at, particularly of the mounting slot?

A man with the vision, the first pic had me worried but the last pic of it is much better. Still alittle funky since the mosin front furniture is thin looking but I think it can be pulled off.

It would look better if you cut off the sights, cut off the wood forward of thereceiver and custom fit furniture for the fore gripp, maybe the same way the psl is or something.

Yeah, that was one of the reasons I went with the M39 nosecap. It gives the front a little bit of a chunkier, boxier look. It's not in the photos, but I'm also keeping the cleaning rod in there too, which gives a thicker appearance to the front of the rifle. I also plan to turn the bayonet lug into a mini rail system of sorts, maybe with a low-profile trail flashlight or bipod.

Thanks for the vote of confidence! That might be a little over my head at the moment because I only got into guns heavily about a year and a half ago, but I'm learning more every day. I've actually toyed with the idea quite a bit and designed a few bolt-on systems in my head that would manually activate the bolt, but I haven't put welder to metal just yet, so I have no idea if they'll actually work.

Regarding the semi-auto mosins above...according to the forums linked, that was Fedorov's design based on the mosin rifle presented in 1912, rejected by nicholai II in 7.62, and was re-presented in 1913 in japanese 6.5mm, and received approval for prototype construction and development

It's an aftermarket side scope mount which is kind of bulky (I think I'll be trimming it down a little soon), plus POSP scopes already sit a little bit off to the left to start with, so those things combined, it's basically a left-eye scope now. Not intentional, but conveniently works out for me

I'm not sure what the virtue of the mahogany stain is besides keeping the Rit from actually getting in to the wood? Minwax stains are oil based and will seal out the water based Rit.

I'd start with Rit and if several applications won't get it dark enough, then add another stain on top, then finish.

Ugh. no way. I would have just painted my prototype stock in that case. I want the rich tones and swirls of the laminate wood.

I worried that RIT first might make the red too bright and pinkish, but it could probably work if I went over it later with stain, as you said, to darken it down.

^^^^ Wow! that came out very nice. The color of the stock also gave it that C&R look.

Thanks! Yeah that's exactly what I was going for. I wanted it to look wartime-original, except, of course, in a configuration that never existed in the real world. I still need to add some small things like the cleaning rod and the barrel band retainer catch thing for the M39 sling band to really nail the milsurp look.
