Hello CG I was hoping to get some good info on k98 rifles. My Girlfriend said she would buy me a $250 rifle for christmas. I was looking at the K98 rifle from this guy mitchells mausers for $199.00 does anyone have any experience with him or his guns. I really dont care much at the moment for matching number although they are important. I want the gun to just take to the range and plinking. its this a decent deal or is there a better place to get them. Thanks for all the help guys.:D

Didn't know they had a $200 rifle. I think their yugo m48's are $300?

if you don't care about collector's value and just want a range gun, Mitchell's is fine. they do shoot well. that's about all that can be said about them that's positive.
they are absolute liars.
just FYI, they falsify their rifles. the 98ks they claim to have that are all matching are just Russian captures that have had their serial numbers ground off and were re-stamped by Mitchell's to make them "all matching".
they also re-blue the metal, replace or re-stamp stocks and the silver bolt...i don't know what to say about those. that's not how they looked in WWII Germany.
i'd choose an ugly Russian capture over a Mitchell's cleaned up hump job any day. Russian captures go for $300 and over usually though. check gunbroker.com for those

I'm glad you asked first. Mitchell's Mausers does not have a good reputation in the collector world.
The German K98ks they sell are Russian Capture (RC) K98ks that have been messed with (stocks sanded, bolt polished, fake matching numbers added). The lowest price listed on their web site is $299. Mitchell's also sells Yugoslavian/Serbian M48s and M24/47s that they used to try and claim were the "same" as K98ks until they started selling real K98ks. Maybe the $199 rifles you mentioned are Yugo Mausers. You can get a Yugo Mauser for less than $199
If you want an honest Russian Capture K98k you can get them for a little over $300

It's ok to get one, just don't tell anyone.

Sorry guys I got the price wrong, It was $299.00. I called them and they told me to call them back. Screw that. Now that I have read up a little more on the gun and history, I think I will wait and a get something more legit. Ill just wait and get a k98 from some other place. Thanks for all the help guys.

You can find shooter RC k98s on GB for under $250 if your patient. I picked up a "27" code 1940 about a month ago for $220 shipped. It was in a vz24 stock and had the wrong bolt in it but I had the correct parts here at the house to "complete" it.

Are you set on a K98?
You can get a very nice Mosin and a bunch of ammo for $250.
Like this -
One very nice 91/30 Mosin and 880 rounds of ammo - $230
Oh man, I think I just talked myself into buying another one...lol...

+1 for the Mosin and bunch of ammo idea. I say that only because you would have lots of ammo.
I think that MM mausers are ugly, especially with the bolt like that. I'd rather just get a normal RC. Like they said, they start at the $300 mark these days...
