Came across the auction with a low price and decided that I could not lose at that price. I bid and was surprised when I won for $101.

It was described as: "good rifling but bore is a bit dark, needs cleaned up". It definetely has the been there and done that look. Non-matching and converted to 7.62 Nato, but it is a Loewe, not a DWM For $101, how could I pass it up?

You guys tell me.

Excellent catch -- I'd be thrilled if I got that deal too.

Good price, congrats!

Me personally, I wouldn't fire .308 out of it, I'd stick with 7.62 NATO ammo. My reasoning being the psi. The .308 Win commercial round produces about 60,000+ psi, where the NATO 7.62 will produce approx 45,000.

(I could be wrong on the exact psi, I'm just going from memory here)

Good deal. I would have taken it. They seem to be going for at least twice that on GunBroker.

I reload and load lighter 7.62 loads for my FR8, I will use those for this old lady.

Ludwig Loewe & Co. Berlin, pre-1897 as they then became:
Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken Aktien-Gesellschaft (German Weapons and Munitions public limited company), known as DWM.

Yeah, I read many reviews. Similar to the Spanish conversions. Some folks say yay, some nay; nobody has any first hand knowledge of a failure. At this age, this lady is destined for a few shots of my own reloads and a safe spot in the safe.

I had one a few years back. The 7.62 hits about 2 feet high at 100 yds, at least it did on mine - don't recall if I used 147 FMJ or 168, but loads were modest, probably using IMR 4064 or 4895.

I use IMR 4895. 42 gr. behind a 150gr. bullet. This produces just under 42,000 PSI according to IMR.

And if I can just find a period sling for a decent price. All I can seem to find are repro's.

Well "mismatched" was correct.

Receiver : H6271
Bolt : 6271
Safety : 15
Bolt Shroud : 15
Trigger Guard : A8759
Magazine Floor Plate : 70
Barrel : A3449
Stock : B5053
Cleaning Rod : C18??

A little bit of active rust (already taken care of) and alot of older pitting.
The bore is pristine; the chamber still full of cosmoline. It looks like somebody cleaned the cosmo off of the exterior and then parked it.

Heck! For a 101 bucks, I consider myself a winner.

how many shots did it take to kill that fish?

The fish saw the 48" Mauser with a 10" bayonet on the end and is still following the direction to "FREEZE!!!".
