Is that nagant pistol legal to do in CA?

if scratch-built from a virgin receiver, yes, it would be legal to make one in CA, initially as a roster-exempt single-shot pistol.

To cut down a existing nagant to that config would mean that it would be an illegal SBR.

The accuracy must be horrible with such a short barrel.

I read a report years back that the bullet would actually tumble in the air after leaving the "barrel" and would create quite a horrific wound. The Russian mafia was known to have used the Obrez Mosin Nagant. Also partizan's used them in WWII and earlier.

Not that much recoil when theres no room for the pressure to build. Probably fairly low fps too.

I got mine a week ago and here it is as of tonight. Not sure what to call it but as of now it's my Yugo 54R. It's about 50% Yugo and 50% PSL, I still have to weld in the lower rails and extend the Yugo top cover. The bolt hold open will be operational in this build.

Ummm really like everyone else keeps saying measure twice and cut once. Infact measure ten times if you need to and then measure again before you cut. I am lucky enough to have a PSL I built on a Romanian receiver and it operates perfectly without a problem so I used the cold steel drawing and double checked against my PSL. Their drawing is very close to what I got on my PSL but they are missing a decent drawing for the shape of the magwell opening so I used the old piece of the receiver that came with my original PSL kit and then made a template off of the Romanian receiver.
If your going to install the bolt hold open center support carefully remove the scope rail from the piece of the receiver that it comes with and if your axis holes are very close to correct you can line them up with the safety lever hole to scribe the bolt hold open hole.

Also important tools you will need are a good scribe, a good sharp automatic centerpunch, and a decent pair of calipers.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have a long the way!

ok the first pistol off the line is done just got done parkerizing it and now Im gonna assemble it. Ill post up pics here in a bit after assembly is complete. We will build more for customers that want one total price for the build will be $1299 on a nodak receiver, barrel will be 12.5in long. I do know that the customer will be picking this thing up today or monday or so but I will take lots of pics before it heads out.

Please note the $1299 is currently the intro price it may change later on depending on prices on kits and receivers. We are not making these off cold steel banks these are made off nodak spud receivers that are currently discontinued but still stripped recievers.

Maybe because Redneck is an 07FFL? But in all other cases you are right I would think.

Can you build pistols out of NDS recievers? Thought this was why all AK pistols were made from flats.yes, they can build from 100% recievers because those receivers have never been built as rifles. In Redneck's case, they have never been DROSed as a long gun, since they receive them as an FFL, so they can build them up as pistols, without issue. The problem for Joe public is that in order to geta receiver from an FFL it first gets DROSed as a long gun, and that that "long gun" designation might taint the receiver forever as a rifle, even though it was never a rifle, and that might allow for an SBR charge in the future. since redneckshootist is an 07, that does't apply.

For some reason I don't think he would be able to just sell the receiver. Since it is a pistol, kinda like the whole ar pistol lower thing too.

But they can't sell you just the receiver. If the receiver is in "single shot" form it's built up already into a pistol.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum or thread to post this question, so please forgive me if I'm stepping on toes.

Someone on another forum asked about creating an Obrez legally. The points made about the receivers all having been rifles and not convertible to pistols was covered there as was here.

I posted a question that no one there has replied to, so I thought I'd run it past this group.

We know that a milled AK can be cut up (demilled) and is considered to be scrap metal, AND that scrap can be welded into a "new" receiver to use as one sees fit.

Would it be possible to demill a Mosin receiver in the same way, (documenting it with photos?), and then reweld the "scrap" into a "new" receiver to use for a pistol?

It makes as much sense (or not) as cutting up the AK's and doing a weld, but I know there are a lot of potholes in the road to legality.

Thanks for any comments.

ke6guj
02-01-2011, 12:32 AM
yes, there should be a legal way to demil the receiver so that it can be remade into a pistol, but to what extent it would need to be cut down, I dunno. It may just be easier to machine a new receiver from scratch.
