I picked up my WASR-10 (7.62x39) yesterday from Colby at Direct Action Solutions (Solana Beach).

http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=352901

This rifle is part of a commemorative edition limited run for the 3rd Battalion-1st Marines (based off of Camp Pendleton). The group is in Afghanistan right now for Operation Enduring Freedom. They should be back stateside by November and their rifles are waiting for them.

Before purchasing this, I did a little homework as usual. I have heard of the negative comments such as canted sight, magazine wobble, sticking bolt, among others. Upon initial inspection, this particular WASR did not exhibit those negative features. The wood furniture isn't as fancy as the one from my Ruger 10/22 Target model but it definitely is NOT ugly. Plain and simple, that's it. Colby gave me a great deal and my wallet was a few hundreds lighter.

Fourteen days later, I took it home and go about familiarizing myself with the Romanian AKM. It’s my 1st AK after all. I field stripped, cleaned, and lubed it. The package came with the usual accessories like the cleaning kit, bayonet, pouch, and oil container. I seem to be missing the rifle sling though.

So today I was obviously excited to break in and sight in the rifle. I am very happy to report that the rifle performed flawlessly. I brought 120 rounds of Wolf ammo. Here’s a shocker to me: the rifle was dead on at 50 yards – I didn’t need to adjust the sights at all and I even bought an AK windage tool. The factory must have boresighted this? I am not a good shot and I was hitting 4” groups per mag at 50 yards. Based on the clusters I saw there, a good shooter can easily do sub-2” groups. The spent cases expelled at 2 o’clock and formed a cluster about 15’ away. With 120 rounds down range, my shoulder was a little sore. Does anybody have a link on the rubber butt pad extension that screws to the existing holes? (I have seen the UTG slip on pad). As others have mentioned the Tapco trigger is indeed nice. Not gritty and definitely better than some of the standard AR triggers that I’ve tried.

On the subject of magazine wobble, this rifle has none of that too. I believe Century Arms has addressed the problem of missing dimples by welding a strip of metal (in lieu of a dimple) shown below:

I got 3 kinds of magazine: metal (imported & blocked), Tapco 30-rounder (blocked), and Tapco 10-rounder. I have heard people not liking the Tapcos but all of my mags worked great. Not one single problem. The metal mags were snug while the Tapcos were super snug. I opted for the grip paddle so magazine manipulation is a breeze. A lot of our brothers in free states like these high cap Tapco mags.

So there you go fellow CalGunners. If you do your homework, you should be a happy WASR camper!!!

Thank you for the review. People should take head about this regarding WASRs. People who talk smack regarding WASRs are really not in the know.

Congrats to you.

They're hit and miss.

Got a couple of WASR threads going now, and as I mentioned, I was chatting with the guy at Bright Spot Pawn a few months ago and he sold a ton of them. Never had a problem, but then he had returns on all 5 rifles out of one shipment... each with various different problems.

But they are no worse (functionally) than Lancaster (but Lancasters are more purdy ;) ), and certainly better than IOinc.

Thanks fellas! Yes, I am very happy with the WASR right now :D

I saved this butt pad photo during my research. Does anybody know where I can get it and does it even fit the WASR?

After a few searches, it looks like the above is a Tapco product and is dicontinued :(

Has anybody used this UTG butt pad instead?

Tapco isn't the only source for these: http://www.amazon.com/SKS-1-Rubber-Buttpad/dp/B000B8ZNV2

That butt pad will fit any AK/SKS/Dragunov butt since they all share the same butt plate hole dimensions.

Plus other types of designs: http://www.google.com/products?q=ak+sks+buttpad&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wf

The regular WASRs are $479. I am not sure if he has more of those commemorative ones (or if he sells them to rhe general public) but do give Colby a call from the link above :)

Henderson had the commemorative edition listed the day this thread started, but it's gone now.

That is a beautiful rifle!

The UTG buttpad is based off a Russian model. The curved indent and slot are for mounting to underfolder stocks, a cool and under-documented feature. I've never used the UTG pad, so can't vouch for it's utility, but the Russian ones are pretty rad. I found some at a recent gun show that still had de-mold powder on them. They were much softer than previous offerings I've examined.
