There're two major groups here: The Armalite AR10 and the DPMS/SR25 .308 AR

As of late, the latter has gained popularity with LMT, KAC, DPMS, and Larue all making DPMS/SR25 .308 ARs. The Armalite doesn't seem to be as popular due to the fact that it can only take AR10 magazines which seem to cost alot. With the other group, you have a bunch of cheaper magazines, including the Magpul LR20 PMAG.

Like Ty said, the magazine choices are greater with the SR25. Not to be a swinger from the Magpul tit, but that's a major draw for me to build a .308 off the SR25 chassis. That, and it seems that the SR25 seems to be gaining a lot of popularity, and I think it can use many of the same parts as the AR10.

Go with the DPS platform, good mags from Cproducts and Magpul. Both are very reasonable in price and reliable. Wish I could say that for the factory DPMS mags, as they are very hit and miss. Seems they had a bad batch last year and a bunch are still floating around.
If you go with a CMMG lower, some mags are really tight. Before you buy a bunch, check the fit first. The mags all work, but the 10 rd Cproduct mags are a pain to remove. The POF lowers are a bit looser and have worked with most mags I tried.

DPMS mags are cheapest for the Armalite/DPMS types, but the cheapest amongst them all is the Fidelis Arms lower that takes G3 mags and accepts DPMS uppers. Next cheapest would be the Rock River LAR-8 which takes FAL mags, but I have no idea what uppers RRA is compatible with.

LWRC and LMT are SR25/DPMS

Our military uses the KAC SR25 aka M110. The Brits use the LMT as do a few other foreign armies.

The set is kind of new and I don't know anyone running them yet. You are best off starting wit a factory built upper or complete rifle (if your budget is well funded). The DPMS & Armalite brand lowers are baned in California, but their uppers are good to go. I have both, but use the DPMS pattern most. The Armalite stuff is very good, but the mags are a bit high. The DPMS uppers can be had for discount at: http://www.rguns.net/rifles/rifles-semiauto-ar15-uppers-308.shtml. The Armalite uppers can be had directly from them. Just wait for one of their sales.

Armalite magazines are proprietary, but the best quality and functioning mag on the market by far. Cost wise they're competitive at 30.00ea direct from Armalite. You can build an Armalite pattern rifle on an Aero Precision lower, or spend another 100.00 and get a Noveske, but it's identical except for the name.

Armalite pattern rifles use only Armalite mags, or modified M14 mags in a pinch.

I doubt that they are selling true waffle SR-25 magazines as they command a price of $70 to as high as $90 per mag last time I checked.
To answer the other question they should interchange as long as they are not out of spec.

Our lowers are designed to use the following mags.

DPMS- I have had follower issues
Knights- Good but way too expensive for a mag
C-Products- Okay but we have had hit or miss issues
P-Mags- These are what I recommend by far, not expensive and never had a feeding problem

For a .308 you can't beat the JD Machine matched billet upper/lower receiver set. DPMS capatible.
