Is the current trend of calling semi-autos assault weapons apply country wide or just in states with restrictions? I'm an engineer so it's always hard for me to call two functionally similar firearms different names just because one is painted black. My synthetic stocked mini-14 is a what?

Thanx, Russ

The term is defined legally per state.

In Arizona, guns are called guns (not cop killers, assault weapons, baby killers, etc.). Great concept!

I used to spend a lot of time in AZ when I lived in San Diego. I never heard the words "Assault Weapon" there unless discussing the expired Federal ban. Same for Texas.

The word "assault" doesn't seem to appear anywhere here:

Umm, it's a rifle. In California it's also a rifle(unless it has a detatchable mag and "assault weapon" features). Being an "assault weapon" in California has nothing to do with the color.

russ,

What little I do know is that the assault rifle laws served vary between state to state so what we call AW in California might not exist in states like Arizona or Las Vegas, Utah etc.

We have MSSAs out here.
Military Style Semi Automatics. The only legal difference is that FFLs are required to see a proof of citizenship/legal residence.
