I handled one last Saturday and the bolt is different from other rifles I've seen. What holds it in place? If something goes wrong it goes straight to your eyes.

The M95 is a straight pull bolt action as opposed to the much more common turn bolt action that you are used to. It has locking lugs on the bolt that lock it into the receiver, the same as a regular bolt action.

The bolt handle also acts as a locking mechanism on many turn bolt actions and it might be the only locking feature that you can see in effect, but this is just an extra safety feature. The primary locking features are the bolt lugs, and these are very similar on both turn bolts and straight pulls.

Thanks for the explanation. What turns me off is the availability of ammo.

Is the bullet magnetic? Can't use it where I shoot.

Any of the old surplus ammo you find will be magnetic and corrosive, But i will tell you what these rifle kick like a frickin mule! I stocked up on the ammo a few years ago some even have the nazi head stamp.

you can get brass at graf's anf hornady makes the bullets - they are 0.329, not 0.323 like other 8mm.

SOG has *the* cheapest price on the 8x56R amo, judge it accordingly.

I don't think they kick, but maybe I'm just used to my wife hitting me, as many others do complain about the kick. 205-gr bullets at 2400 or so. that is solid .30-'06 class ballistics.

as mentioned above, it is a turnbolt mechanism, and I think it is very safe.

if you are interested in one of these, and you do not reload, then buy ammo from SOG now, at least several hundereds of rounds.
as all ammo for these was corrosive, bore condition is the great variable.

whatever

These are on sale right now at all Big 5 Sporting Goods stores. I think for $119?

I do reload even for the 9mm, they practically everywhere. Also load for the 30-06 so I'm used to getting kicked by a mule. I'll just bid my time for this rifle. Hopefully they will still be around by the time I decided to get one.

Yes, you are correct on both counts about the ammo.

You want the 8x56R for that rifle.

Another thing the guy at Big 5 won't know is that if you intend to load more than one round at a time, you need a clip. Get 'em on ebay.

The new Hornady ammo doesn't. The milsurp pre-WWII may, I haven't bought any of that.

Straight-pull bolts are fun. Check out the K31 rifles for a great example. Also check out the Ross rifles.

City Arms has one of those M95s sitting around.

I just got mine back from ades gunsmith for headspace check and an overall bill of health. he said several times to take the bolt down.. not all that hard but these instructions (http://www.geocities.com/codywyk/) hellped a lot..I used carb cleaner then clp and then a dab of grease in the mateing surfaces.. I am still cleaning the boar. I do not have a 8 mm hag but my 9mm jag fits real snug...eeek is my barrel shot out? there appeares to be pleanty of lands and groovs and dirt... it is getting shinney :)

Clean your BORE not your Boar.
so you leave the endtrails and hide on the boar when you eat it?:p

great example of sidetracking a perfactly usfull thread... anyone seen oshmily?

I'd be worried if the 9mm jag DIDN'T fit real snug.

How's an 8mm bullet fit at the muzzle end?

The M95/34 is not 8mm it's bigger. You can all so re size 7.2x54r brass for it. Bullets are hard to find for it. You can re size bullets to fit it. If you do search at surplus rifle . com you can find loading info for it.

Yeah, but it's only slightly bigger than 8x57 (which is properly 7.92x57.)

Mauser's 8 dials in at .323.. or is it .318? - this is .329. Not a whole lot of difference.

it was prety darn snug.. like if you use 2 patches on a correct sized jag. my heavy patches would not go through, just the strechy ones would

Yes, that stuff is also for your M95, but I don't think the ammo is on clips like the Nazi marked stuff is.

holly crap that thing kicks like a mule! serously, I plink with a .300 win-mag and that thing kicked my ars. first squeeze busted my lip right open. I was bleading like a stuck pig and I will be dambed if the 2nd round didn't do the same thing. well you just got to get back up on that horse and I think I figured it out, hold the stock high in your sholder. that seemed to work because ofer the next 100 rounds I only busted my lip 5-6 more times
