View Full Version : $2500.....Build a .308 bolt action

Tom Slick

What would you build/buy if you wanted a nice shooting rifle with a budget of $2500. It could be a tactical / bench style in a caliber similar to .308.
Would you spend $1000 on the rifle and $1500 on the scope?
$1500 on the rifle with a $1000 scope?
Which action?

JeffPro

I spend it equally. I never go less for a scope than I would on the rifle.

I do lurk over at caprc.
The question is hypothetical, just curious if anyone in the centerfire section does anything but machine receivers and go to build parties.

So would you build something like this?

The cheapest I would go is something like the Surgeon RSR, Bartlein 6mm 7.5 twist barrel, B&C Medalist stock (preferably a McM A5 or Manners T4), and a Nightforce of the flavor of your choosing. Of course, Randall would do the chamber work...duh. He's a magician.

I'd buy my brother in law's Savage 110 .308 in the McMillan A5 stock w/Harris bipod. That's $1400, with a cheap-ish scope on it. Sell the scope - 10x fixed Falcon Menace - and then have $1100+ whatever I could get for the scope.

I'm bad, $3000 for just the rifle and $2500 for the scope and rings

thats not even enough for a GAP rifle :(. I would buy a Surgeon action and save the rest of the money until I could continue this project.

Remmy 700p or SPS
egw base
TPS rings
NF scope.

Yes you are spending a lot on the scope but you can upgrade the rifle as you go. Can't really with the scope.

Remington R5 .308, out of the box with OEM Stock -- $1100
Nightforce NXS 3.5-15X Mildot $1400
Rings/Mounts $150

These are MSRP kind of numbers., For your proposed price, you can probably find these for a hundred dollars less total, and I SWEAR you will probably not be able to get a better Remington based rifle than this, even from a custom gunmaker at two to three times the price. This gun will shoot better than you. When it gets too easy with this gun, go out to 1000 yards...

Most people just read the last few posts. (similarly they only read newspaper headlines, which keeps Democrats in office) I have made that mistake myself. In the "what would you do with a guy shooting an illegal gun" it seemed everybody was just reading the first few posts and then started commenting.

Find a used package over on snipershide. Always people looking to sell to move up. Can get some really good deals. Right now I am trying to trade down.

You could do something different like a Tikka Varmint w/heavy barrel. Then get a Manners stock. For a scope checkout the SWFA SS 10x42 side focus. All under $2500.

I'd use it as a down payment on a AI AE MKII and scavange the USO off my Savage for glass. Or buy a Surgeon 591, a Bartlien 5R and a Manners T5A (that should be right around 2,500) then save up some more to get the rest of the parts and send it off to a smith, Tac Ops, GAP, KMW or others.

NightForce 5.5-22 $1500

Rem 700 5R + Scope of your choice. Should be around your price range. And you can upgrade as you see fit later. The 5R is the upgraded package of the 700P.

I was in the same situation and looked at many things. I bought the Savage model 12 F/TR. Kinda of long barrel, great trigger, single shot. I used a Bushnell 6500 6-30x50 scope. with rings and mounts and everything it came a little over $2500. With my hand loads it is sub 1/2 MOA. I did rebed it, that is the only thing I have done to it.

If you value return to zero, holding zero, precise adjustments, ruggedness, and good glass, then Nightforce is for you. Otherwise, you'd be fine with a Bushnell.

5R's are good rifles...for a factory tube...but they are still a factory tube.. Most guys that say the rifle will outshoot you are mediocre shots. Or they just don't know better.

Well my Nikon's hold zero have precise adjustments and they're rugged oh and they have great glass. I guess Nightforce isnt for me.

It's the cheapest scope for what you need. (Reliable tracking, reliable return to zero, durable, good optics, reticle and adjustment choices)

Hence the popularity.

Well my Nikon's hold zero have precise adjustments and they're rugged oh and they have great glass. I guess Nightforce isnt for me.

Nikon did make a decent tactical scope a while back. If that's the one you have then you might be set, but the adjustments didn't match the reticle. Otherwise try this: Zero your scope/rifle, shoot 100yd dope, 800yd zero, running the both knobs five times from end to end between EACH shot for 10 shots. Then shoot another group and box test. If the scope tracks reliably you should have nice groups and everything should return to zero. Every NF scope will do this every time. Not so much with other cheaper scopes.

There are cheaper scopes that seem to track reliably but we know they will usually not last very long with how we use them.

Keep in mind, if you want to do any upgrade mods to your rifle, most gunsmith will work on Remington, not so on Savages or Winchester.

Also, Remington will hold higher value.. I've seen highly modded Remington 700 retain 80% sometimes 95% of it's value, in some cases even on the 110% due to the reputation of the Smith whom work on it. With Savages, you will be lucky to get 60%

That said, there is nothing wrong with Savages, they are accurate rifles

bomb_on_bus
10-30-2010, 11:12 AM
out of the box guns get out of the box accuracy. but its a great place to start and learn.

5R rifled barrels are great and a remmy 700 action is a good place to start for accuracy as well. X-newyawker has a great setup that would be a very good place for you to start out at while staying as close to your budget as possible.

If you want to save some money cruise the for sale threads on snipershide, gunbroker and calguns. I have seen some great prices if you wait and search for it.

Savage SS Target action ~$500 w/shipping & transfer fees.
Benchmark 6 BR (no .308 for me) 1-8" heavy barrel ~$380
Stockade stock (BR or Tactical) ~$400-500
Rings/Base ~$150
used Nightforce BR ~$1050

With a little shopping around, buying the last couple items used where possible, easy $2500 short/long range tackdriver.

Sorry to thread jack, but what is the difference between a 20MOA base and a 0 MOA base? (when looking at EGWs website at their bases) and which is better from 100-600 (even out to 1000 one day?)

lockandloadllc
10-31-2010, 8:00 AM
The difference is that you don't have to adjust elevation as much since its already 20 MOA up. The purpose is to make scopes that don't have alot of elevation adjustments more able to get to range.

G-forceJunkie
10-31-2010, 6:28 PM
Depends on your scope and how much comeup you need for the distance and caliber your shooting. Lets say you zero your scope on a 0 moa rail and have 25 moa of "up" left in your scope before it tops out. Lets say your shooting a .308 and you need 15 or 16 moa up to get to 600 yards. Your fine. But now you want to go out to 1000 yards, you need 38 moa or so. Won't be able to since your scope runs out of adjustment. The solution is to build in 20 moa into the base. Basicaly, it is slanted forward. Now you have 25moa in the scope + 20 in the base= 45 total so your gtg for 1000 yards.Sorry to thread jack, but what is the difference between a 20MOA base and a 0 MOA base? Alot pf people forgot to also mention, not everyone is a half inch shooter, if you are doing MOA, you are doing pretty good
