Looking for a new .223 bolt rifle. I have looked at / tried Remington 700s and Savage. What can you recommend as a solid target rifle, prefer 1/8 or 1/7 twist. Discuss?

So what were your thoughts on the Remington and Savage then?

Remington, Savage and Tikka are the top choices. Each have their own merits.

I have a Remington 700 in .223 that I love. Thing is a tack driver.

I haven't shot the Savage but, from what I hear, it is just as good of quality as the Remington. Supposedly, the Savage trigger is better than the Remington X-Mark, which I don't doubt, and that typically takes it up over the Remington.

If you're interested, I'm selling my 700 VSF in the For Sale section. It's a 1 in 12" twist though. If you're dead set on the faster twist and you like Remington, I would look at the 700 SPS or 700 P in .223.

Best of luck in your search.

Well, I liked both but I am kinda leaning twords the savage because of the accu-trigger. Just looking for others opinions and recommendations.

Range only, i shoot mostly 100-200 yds (I know 1/8 is over kill) but would like to find some 400-600 yd ranges. Looking in the 0-2k range. Bullets range from pmc bronze to reloads of spear fmjbt, h322 and cci41 primers.

i have a remmy 700 24" bull barrel and a CZ with 20" barrel. both in .223. love them both. the trigger on a CZ is crazy light. too light for me. i use the remmy as a bench gun and CZ for hunting.

If you want 1/8 or 1/7 then Rem is out. They do a 1/9 as the fastest IIRC.

I had a Remington XR100 which was the most accurate gun I ever shot...The thing did not have a fancy stock it was the stock thumhole. It did not have a fancy scope, it was a Tasco 6x-24x...It was a shooter and it was .223...The thing was a sub MOA most of the time. I wish I never sold it but hey, I got what I wanted for it. Only draw back was it was as single round bolt action. One of my future purchases is an M700...However, I would get 308 but we'll see...If I go 308 I will learn to reload as well. But yeah if you can find an XR100...Get it.

Honestly, you cannot go wrong with both the Savage and Remington. Our group goes out to shoot squirrels, both guns have killed squirrels past the 500 yard mark.

Buy the rifle which have the most options best suited for your style of shooting.

I'll say it again :) Savage owns F-Class.

Also, customizing a Savage usually will not require the skills of, nor high payments to, a gunsmith.

Yes, that's my 2009 Cervelo P2 bike. I love it....fast and sexy. :) How do you like the BMC?

And back on topic...I like my Savage 12FVSS in .223. It has a 1/9 twist barrel but I've shot 75gr HPBT Match ammo out of it all the way to 1000 yards. The 26" barrel helps. :)

The Accutriggers are awesome for a stock trigger. I shot some 1" groups to day with my 223 10FP, its 1" only because of a flyer. 4 shots in 1/2" is pretty good for a stock 8 yrs old rifle. I have a Remmy 700 on the way. So you can't lose with either!! Good Luck.

I think the Savage Accutrigger is over rated. It's very good, but has alot of overtravel and wiggle. I have a few of each & think the Savage is certainly not near the best. I think the Remington can be adjusted to be better. The trigger on the Ruger Varmint/Target rifles is much better than the Savage and as adjustable as the Remington.

The Ruger 77V line gets very little press, but I think it's worth looking at. I have them in 223, 25.06, 6.5 Creedmoor and 308. The stock is made designed for bench shooting, trigger is adjustable. Not a whole lot of add ons to be bought though and I think the twist is pretty slow. I use 52 grain BTHP in mine pretty much exclusively, nothing 60 or over.

You might want to check out the Howa. A buddy of mine has one, and loves it.

CZ makes some very nice detachable magazine .223s that are quite finely made.

A Ruger Number One is a fine Varmint rifle as well.

My browning A-bolt Bull barrel has out shot anything else I have owned or shot.

Second :D

However, Ruger doesn't offer much choice for rifling twist rate. The .223 Rem. Varminter is a 1/9 only.

I have the 22-250. It was my first centerfire rifle and I bought it to learn reloading with because that action is like a vault door and I knew it would be a safer platform for a new reloader. That, and I love the looks and the shorter length.

My $.02

Ever try a Tikka trigger? Saying the Savage has the "best" trigger is....Uhh....rather bold IMHO.

Yep, have tried several Tikka Triggers,
Bold; not at all, I should have said it is the best Trigger I have ever used.
I have had every Trigger you mentioned and still IMHO the Savage is by far the best.
But again just my opinion, YMMV :)
