Any word on if Kel Tec has stepped up production on these or are they still having problems?

Yes.
I have a Cali legal RFB with a fake can and grip wrap.
I have only a couple hundred rounds through it so i cannot say it "IS" totally reliable but, it has functioned 100% so far.
It is easy to strip after you lube the take down pins. (Very tight)
The trigger breaks cleanly and there is a lot of take up.
Best bulpup trigger I have ever tried though.
It has digested every type of ammo including steel cased without issue. No adjustments to gas regulator needed so far.
But I digress, you can buy from "someone" on Gunbroker etc. and have it FFL shipped in parts to a cali 07 FFL that can mod it to "legal" configuration.

Has the nickel coating on your bolt started to flake off at all?

RFB is first KelTec product I purchased.
First time I held one I had to have it. Ergos are great for me.
What can I say. VERY pointable and comes up nicely. Balances well.
Putting iron sights on it isn't worth it. Too close together. Immediately went to RDS with 3x power.
Empties dumping out the front is epic. Range buddies like that.
Mags lock in nicely. FAL metric for those not paying attention.
All controls work very well and operate in a positive controlled way.
Ambi safety switch works well with grip wrap.
The sling it ships with is not stellar but works. Looking for better elsewhere.
Other than that I can't really say if it is a stellar rifle. More rounds down range will tell me more.
On an engineering note, the thing seems to be over built. In a good way.
Nothing flimsy about the parts, fit, finish or feel.
It seems worth it to me. To each his own.

Good to hear that is looking to be my next long gun purchase, that is if I can find it at one of my distributors.

Dang a $1000 over dealer cost? No thanks, I'll wait or worst case scenario get one off Gunbroker for $1400.

I'm going to bide my time, and wait for KelTec to start series production of the 24" or 30" barrelled variants.

1) Because I prefer full-sized rifles over carbines.
2) If I need to have a longer gun to make the 30" OAL requirement, might as well make the extra couple of inches functional.

Given that these take UNMODDED FAL mags, a featureless config is very interesting indeed :D

I just got one after waiting 1 YEAR (yes, it took that long)... It's soooo nice. Really solid... and well built, heavy - a lot of metal is used in the build. The guys at the gun shop (FFL) i picked it up at were all amazed and teary eyed and couldn't believe it was made by Kel-Tec (since most of their stuff is, well, plastic). I just mentioned having one at another shop and they asked,"how did u get it into CA?" haha.. Well, yes, it can be done and yes it is a LONG WAIT. But it's worth it. It has a crazy machined and anodized black aluminum bullet button. It also has an extended flash hider. it's only a few inches longer than stock to make the 30" so it really hasn't taken anything away from the looks. The stock hider has slots only on one side to compensate for kick but the new extended one just has equally spaced ones all around so I may have another one made that functions more like the original. Got mine at www.lanworldinc.com I will be dropping a 3.5x trijicon horseshoe dot on soon but even with the cheap-*** optic I had on yesterday the thing functioned excellent!
