Eldo is pretty much a shall issue. If you have a clean back ground, i can't see you getting kicked back. I had the same concerns. I pick up my ccw in three weeks.

have you had your training? I waited until i was approved (2nd interview). I can't recommend LFIguns.com more. Wes is just simply the best. Search on here for lfiguns (screen name CCWtrainer).

On March 5th, I dropped off my registration paid my $125 fee and was told it would be three to six weeks. That wasn't an issue as I was out of the state for four weeks teaching re-class for the Army. But if my math is right I'm coming up on week seven.

Add to that that gregm784 dropped his application off on the 2nd of March, has already been interviewed, completed the course through LFI and has a scheduled picked up date in early May and my concern grows (not about gregm784 getting his CCW, I mean he seems like a fine upstanding individual and all that) but that I haven't heard anything is concerning.

And before anyone says it, I did call and they took my information and said they'd get back to me. That was a whole two hours ago, and still nothing...

(and if you take that last line seriously you need to go do pushups)

Man, two weeks and a day left to wait.

I SUCK at patience. I supposed this is helping me learn to accept it, but i can't see it.

Anyone know if i can ADD a gun when i go to pick it up? I seem to have purchased another handgun.......i have no idea how this happens. I go to buy ammo, come away with a DROS form and a 10 day wait.......

Gregm -

It's worth a shot, all that they can say is no. I just added a gun, and it was simple and free (no weapon ispection required) - but I did have to make an appointment.

Try taking a completed copy of the form that Brandon posted for me in Post #220 of this tread.

Two weeks will pass before you know it - good luck with the addition.

Did the interview today. He told me I was clean enough I should have taken the class first and come in with the certificate, as it would have cut down on my wait time because I could have scheduled my pickup then and there (still would have had to wait weeks, but that would have been weeks from today as opposed to weeks frmo when I complete the course)

gregm784
04-24-2012, 9:58 PM
That's great. Don't do what I did and wait for the class to sch your next visit. Schedule it now. Take the course by the time you are due to be there. They re 3-4 weeks out right now.

gregm784 I'm asking because you went through it...

What is the shooting/qualification requirement for El Dorado? I asked the guy giving me the interview and told me all I needed was a certificate.

Doing a web search gives me different numbers from different counties.

gregm784
04-25-2012, 1:43 PM
EDC requires an 8 hr course and a certificate. I took the 16hr course because i wanted more knowledge. The shooting requirement is very easy to satisfy.

15yrd, 7yrd, 3yrd 12 shots from each station. 45 seconds from 15, 30 seconds from 7, 15 seconds from 3. Each station involves a reload. 6 rounds in two different magazines, or a speed loader for wheel guns.

After learning what i didn't know, i will be continuing my education.

target is this guy. You need all rounds inside large, outter ring.

My timeline:
9FEB12 - Downloaded and filled out the application (CA DOJ) from the Sheriff's Web page. Called and scheduled my first appointment for 5MAR12.
5MAR12 - Went to the first appointment, finger printed, scanned, paid my fees.
19APR12 - Contacted by Sheriff's staff to schedule second interview for 23APR12
23APR12 - Completed second interview and weapon inspection
29APR12 - Completed training (thanks Wes and Joe at LFI for fitting me in)
3MAY12 - Drop off completed certification and pick up CCW

Originally my pickup date was 2June, but by checking the scheduling website every day I was able to move it. So knocking on wood, on the 3rd I'll have my CCW.

According to that schedule it was 84 days between the day I filled out the application and the day I'll be issued my CCW. It will have been 59 days from the first interview (and application drop off) until the pickup.

Costs:
$125 processing fee
$265 Training fee (base fee + fee for three weapons)
$7 Range fee
$100 for ammo for three weapons (.45, .40, 9mm)
$50 fuel (travel to and from interviews, range, classes, etc)
Total: $547
Priceless: Having a CA CCW

Just an update....had my first appt on 4/23, passed background checks, had second interview and got approved on 6/13. Taking class on 6/23. During second interview, I was not once asked about my juvenile records (I listed all I could remember on initial application), and the detective informed me nothing came back so we did not need to discuss. That was a surprise....a GOOD surprise.:D

Too soon? No.

I moved from Placer recently to El Dorado. I scheduled my initial appt once I knew my closing date. I scheduled it for the week after closing. I immediately changed my DMV registration and got a new one issued. When I had my first appt to turn in my application I only had my registration and my mortgage booklet. They could not accept the booklet, but started my process anyway. I then supplied the 2nd form of residency at the interview. DMV wouldn't issue a new drivers license with my address.

I showed up a week after my close with my mortgage insurance policy and various papers from the purchase of the home. My interview was friendly and generated a few eye rolls while discussing my Placer county experience. Spent about 30 min total.

I did my class again as I was denied a year ago by placer, and I am currently waiting out the 8 weeks. 1/2 way done tomorrow.

I encourage anyone currently lucky enough to live in EL Dorado County to apply or if you are looking to buy a home do what I did and get the hell out of those other counties if you can.

I ran into Safeway in Cameron Park this afternoon to pick up some deli pasta salid to go with dinner. I was headed to the gym, so I wasn't carrying. As I walked in, I saw a new sign on the automatic door "Firearms Prohibited". I know the sign wasn't there on Sunday when I was in - or at least I didn't see it.

I know that Safeway is within their right to post this sign - just a little frustrating. My family has been shopping there for the last 10+ years, probably $125 per week on average. I will simply start shopping at Food 4 Less or Bel Aire. I intend to try to send an email to them tomorrow letting them know that their new policy has cost them a long time, loyal customer.

If this isn't the right location for this post - please feel free to move it.

I'd like to add that it's obvious that the Sheriff's staff have adopted and support his policies on CCW. EVERY single person I dealt with was friendly and very helpful. Even better, they seemed to enjoy their job. (That says a lot.)

I've talked to people in other counties who felt they were treated like a criminal through the who process of applying for LTC.

I followed up with records Friday, they stated I would receive a call, or something in the mail soon. I came home today to find a certified mail notice for pick up from USPS the sender being el dorado county.

This sounds like a denial to me, why else would thy need to insure the delivery was certified? Can anyone confirm if EDSO sends denials and or approvals via certified mail.

I was told after approval the detectives would send the packet to records and then records would call to schedule an appointment. The detective even said it would take 4-6 weeks to process the packet.

I am also 100% certain he stated he was issuing the permit although that may just be a good way to get you on your way with no argument. I'll be at the post office @ 9 sharp!

I picked up the certified letter. It states in short that I'm denied because I did not disclose a prior arrest. I was denied in placer for speeding/cell phone/towing tickets no talk of arrest. I have never been arrested in my life, not even placed in hand cuffs. I can only laugh at these circumstances, this is such a joke. Writing a letter now.

Enjoy.

Do you happen to have a open container ticket? That is considered an arrest and no cuffs or booking involved.

I never have had an interface with the police or court system for anything outside of run of the mill VC violations. I have never been arrested while being ticketed, even temporarily. I have only been questioned one time by the police with regard to a neighbor complaint dog barking/truck parking situation.

As a repossessor I have had thousands of working calls in to various police agencies, hundreds of working interactions with police none resulting in an arrest, detainment temporary or otherwise.

This is baffling, How do I go about pulling an arrest history from law enforcement to see what this mystery arrest is?

ElDub1950
10-30-2012, 6:46 PM
That's all kind of strange. There were some mixups on mine ( a guy with the same name in a small town I used to live in had multiple felony arrests ) they asked me about it during the interview. I explained it (I've had to explain and prove it multiple times) and told them to simply check the middle name DL# and SSN of the offender. They did right there. Done Deal. Got my LTC.

It really should be very easy to clear up.

That seems reasonable, I find it nonsensical that they would not confront me on the mystery arrest in the interview. The investigator never mentioned or inquired about an arrest.

I just spoke to a friend that says the same issue is happening to another applicant as well. Sounds as if they may be overwhelmed.

Rogue,
In light of your outcome and some other things you said, maybe those eye rolls weren't in regards to your Placer experience... Just sayin'... Maybe.

I was told that the interview was really a "get to know you, and see how stable you appear" session.
Were you sarcastic or anything? Have excessive speeding tix or anything else that shows disregard for the law?

Thats possible but I would contend that both the tech and the investigator eluded that the ticket were not a problem, plus the letter states I did not disclose an arrest, not that my character is in questions due to vc violations as placers did.

For those of us that live in El Dorado County and have taken advantage of our new Sheriff's CCW process, here is another opportunity to support the SO.

It's called the Citizens Academy and it's put on by the SO; here is a link for more information: http://www.edcgov.us/Government/Sheriff/Programs/Citizen_s_Academy.aspx

This years academy is coming to a close. Last night we did traffic stop role playing where we got to drive a cruiser and pull over a deputy or deputies in a role playing situation. Great learning experience!!

They are taking applications for next year and will put a class together when they have around 25 people. Take advantage of this and support our SO.

For those of you who were in the first wave of permits under Sheriff D'Agostini, don't forget that your renewal will be coming up in the next few months. The renewal application is available at the bottom of the Sheriff Dept home page and it can be dropped off any time with no fees collected until approved. Fill it out, drop it off and set an appt for near the time of your expiration.

Remember, if you let it expire, you start over from the beginning....

No lie. You are going to a strip mall. I believe it's called Broadway Plaza. 1336 i think? Been a year now since i was there. It's well marked with the address (not as a sheriff station however).

Fantastic. I was standing outside @ 8:05am (im always early) and was out of there by 8:30. Quick runthrough of my application, quick serial number check of my weapons, and a ton of BSing about different holsters and just general gun talk. Very Pleasant.

Im a young guy (early 20's) so I figured I might get some flack or at least a good talking to. Nope, just honest conversation. We talked a little about makng sure you are of the 'right mindset' when carrying, i.e. switching from sport shooter to defensive shooter when you put your gun on in the morning.

I was suprised a few times; I asked a few questions reffering to carrying while riding my motorcycle, and he said he has never had anyone ask about that! I was like what the heck? This guy is a Deputy/Detective and carries a gun essentially everyday, and no citizens would ask questions about what gun he carries off duty, what kind of holster he perfers on a bike, summer time, and things like that.

Overall very pleasant. I happen to know one other person that had thier second interview today, and he was very pleased as well.

I'll add that he was VERY willing to answer any and ALL questions I had.

Cool deal. I wear my IWB and a t=shirt with my abrasion jacket on over the top of it. If i'm going to cover lots of miles, the gun goes to the tank bag in another holster, but my iwb stays on.

Chances are if I'm just riding to work like usual I'll carry IWB But I'm going to get a shoulder rig as well for longer rides or cold days.

Good to know! So what happens if there were 4 offenses as a juvenile, but I only remember 2 and list only those 2? I barely even remember those.

I know this is an old post but I want to point out that you can get a live scan done and a copy of your rap sheet sent to you if you are unsure what is on your record.

What are the renewal times looking like these days? Mine is coming up in November and I'm looking to figure out when to start the process.

And a couple years ago some people were timing renewals so that they did not need to do the training every other renewal... Is the EDSO still accepting training that is just under 2 years old for a renewal?

As far as renewals im not 100% sure. If you need to go through the same process as if you were applying for a new license mine looked like this...

Initial appt. - Feb. 25th

Appt. with the Detective - April 10th (Approved)

Pickup License - May 23rd

I just wanted to pass on some info I found out yesterday when I phoned the Sheriff's Office. When you are renewing an LTC, you don't need to make an appointment to drop off the paperwork, just to pick up your completed license.

Currently the earliest appointment available is in the last week of August.

I walked in my renewal paperwork today... They are 3 MONTHS out on LTC pickups... You guys who have to wait 8 weeks before your next interview may want to see if you can schedule your LTC pickup now..

That way you'll have your LTC a month or so after your second interview. Otherwise you'll be waiting another 3 months.

Mine is up in late September, I turned in my renewal paperwork (no appointment required) in mid-June. I received my approved paperwork back from the sherrif's office around 3 weeks later. I made an appointment in early September to drop off my training certificate and money. For my training I signed up with Wes Lagomarsino at http://www.lfiguns.com/. I did my original class with him and really enjoyed it. I think he does a couple of the 4 hour classes per month - the shooting is held at Sacramento Valley Shooting Center which is near Sloughhouse which isn't all that far.

A couple pieces of advice for those of you currently in the process...

Once you get approved, call to make an appt. to pick up your permit (assuming you have your cert. from your class or can complete it in the mean time.)

AND

BTW If you are waiting for a pick-up appointment, dont be afraid to call EVERYDAY looking for cancellations. I felt super reserved about calling. Then I said Eff it... I started calling every morning about 8:00am and got one within a week.

GutPunch

Its really too bad they don't have a way to expedite the process for someone with a permit already (in my case Sac County) who is moving. I've done what I can to sign up in advance but I'm still looking at a September date for the first appointment. :(

If I'm not mistaken, they will accept a personal check, maybe even cash. Not sure on the fees, or if you will have to re-do your livescan. Probably a phone call would be best; they have always been very helpful for me.

Wanted to add 2 guns to my LTC (on roster Shield and off roster XDs)

Logged on to the EDSO calendar website .. appointments available in 8 days .. booked one for 10:20 this morning.

Arrived at 10:18 and parked 10 steps from the front door.

Walked up to the Records window and handed my LTC and DL to a friendly, smiling EDSO employee. I wrote down the Mfg, Model, Caliber & Serial of the 2 guns. Waited a few minutes for the paperwork, signed 4 places and put my thumb print 3 places. Nice lady neatly trimmed my new LTC and gave it to me. We thanked each other and I walked out smiling!

Cost for qualification certificate = Not Required
Total time to complete adding 2 guns to my LTC - 14 minutes
Total paid to EDSO for updated LTC - Zero $$
Value of living in a 2A friendly county - Priceless !!

I am about to make an appointment to add a 1911. From your description, everything was done on the same appointment? Meaning, updating the permit and acquiring it the same day? Did anyone inspect the firearm as well? My permit has taken up all the lines on listed firearms. Do you have an idea where they list the 4th firearm and beyond.

Yes all done and new permit in hand in the short appointment. No inspection, they even used the pic from my old permit.

The 4th + gun goes on the back of the permit. Makes laminating it and fitting it in your wallet more difficult, but, oh well ... free-county problems. :D

Initial screening and fingerprinting for FBI background - Feb 27
Background Complete - May 29
Final interview to state Protection of Family as good cause - June 17
CCW Class - June 18
CCW Issued - July 1

Every step of the way, El Do Co Sherrif's office was helpful, informative, and pleasant to interact with. Another great reason to move to El Dorado Hills should you be tired of the traffic and cost of living in the bay. This is really as close we are going to get to a free state in CA without having to retreat to a rural area...

PS - from the beginning they told me they are a few months backed up due to delays in FBI background results being returned...

They used to - when I first got my CCW in 2011... they were kind of cheesy, and 'blurry'... also - only the paper permit is valid as proof of permit, so I was told.

Not Sacramento - this is the EDC forum... I don't know about Sac, ask in the Sac forum - they should be able to help you out.

I keep seeing this repeated many times but I don't find anything that says the plastic is not valid. Nor has anyone here ever stated they had a problem with any LEO encounter because they had a plastic permit.

I also find it hard to believe that multiple counties are issuing invalid permits. It's becoming the norm.

I pick up my renewal in a couple of weeks and I'll ask. But if it's fine with EDSO it's fine with me.

If you search the forum or Google, you'll find the statute that clearly states "the only acceptable, valid form of permit that shall be recognized in CA is (description of paper form)".... EDSO will tell you that too, the plastic one is like a souvenir.

The police only care that it comes back valid when they run it.

Law Enforcement in other counties typically won't accept it. They accept the formal paper version. They don't know about each county's plastics...

I called this afternoon (11/16/15) and booked the first available initial appointment - 12/21/15. Looks like they are really backlogged, but not as bad as Sac County when I got my permit 4+ years ago. I was hoping to not have to go through the whole process since my permit is still valid, but they said no.

Funny thing is now in Sacramento County you can almost get a next day appointment for initial and long as its a Monday thru Thursday.

EDSO continues to excel in their customer service. I dropped off my renewal application last week .. no appointment necessary. While I signed my renewal app they booked an appointment for me to pick up my new permit, on the day that was most convenient for me. Seeing the threads from other counties, I'm really glad I live here :)

BTW, did my renewal class yesterday afternoon with Joe Truesdale, One on On Firearms. First class I've taken with Joe. Really like him and his team. Going to sign up for some other train classes soon.

Think about sharing a brief review of your training class in the Permit/License To Carry Training Classes & Experiences thread:

I am sure people will appreciate your feedback.

I did my initial drop off of paperwork, etc. back in August and I still have yet to get the actual interview with the detectives. But like you guys said, the back log can be a good thing in that it means that more people are applying, but delay is still delay.. :( I plan to call the EDSO to see how much farther out I should anticipate the wait..

It comes with a letter, stating "This card is not recognized as a valid CCW license by the the State of California. Please make sure you always carry your paper CCW license with you when you carry concealed."

Signed by Sheriff A'Agostini.

Also - I have more than 3 weapons on it, so they don't list them on teh plastic. The say "refer to DOJ carry permit".

And it's still blurry...:)

Wow... was 4-5 weeks when I got mine in 2011...
It's almost as if people don't trust the Gov't to keep them safe!

Applied in late june, just got call back for interview with detectives. Unfortunate timing since I am now away for work and won't be back until may of 16. Might have to start over :(

Alert them regarding your planned travel/temporary absence.

Life goes on while you await the processing of your app they understand this.

I wouldn't reapply unless/until they suggest you do so...

Picked up my renewal a couple weeks ago. They confirmed the plastic card is useless and that they don't bother to list guns on the plastic any more. I told them to not bother sending it. Just something else to put in a drawer somewhere and throw it away in a couple of years :)

My dad bought me a CCW course for Xmas, so I'm filling out the paperwork now.

I've browsed through all of the archived pages here, and didn't see clarification on the accepted "reason" one should put to gain access to the magic kingdom. I put "Self defense, personal protection.", is that satisfactory without further elaboration, or do they want more as the paperwork states ("If the CCW license is desired for self-protection...you are required to explain and provide good cause for issuance of the license.")?

Will keep the forum posted on how things go.

Self defense.

Nothing else is necessary

Well, it looks like my interview is scheduled for later this month. Is there anything I should know about what they'll ask or discuss with me ? I've heard various things but would like to hear directly from you guys. I have a clean record so that's not an issue, but I've heard some say the process is easy to someone else say that his dad got grilled and he was a vet and gov't employee, so if you could share your experience so I'll have some insight, I would really appreciate it, thanks !

It's been awhile, but my interview was short and pleasant. They kinda want to see you to make sure your not some twitchy crackhead that just hasn't gotten caught at anything. They know the answers to most of the questions they ask so they're just checking you're forthright and honest. Be relaxed and answer anything honestly and don't ramble.

My livescan had returned info about a guy with the same name who lived near at one time a decade ago. I'd had the same problem before and just pointed out the different middle name and that was that.

I'm surprised anyone ever felt like they 'got grilled'... if they did it was probably because they were a gov't employee. That group is known to work with a lot of sketchy people like politicians :)

Received my permit recently, made my initial appointment in November and the first available was mid-December. Had the 2nd interview end of April and turned in my training docs this week to receive my permit. So roughly 5 months start to finish.

Just finished the second interview, went swimmingly. Just basic questions and going over the dos and don'ts. Just need to do my class and I'm good to go!
