Sounds a lot like herb bauers in fresno ca. They have everything but are way overpriced and service is nonexistent. I stood looking at a gun for 20 min. before anyone asked if i needed help and there was only one other guy in there besides me. Ridiculous.

I had the exact same experience at herb bauers. After I checked out the gun I gave it back and they didn't ask if I had any questions, they just kept talking among themselves as if I wasn't even there. I walked away and I won't ever go there again.

With service and attitudes like that, I wonder how well maintained their bullet traps and air filters are. It sounds like they don't give a crap about the place or the customers. The EPA ought to do an inspection. ;)

Evan's, they are still stuck in the Stone Age compared to the rest of us. That's taking into account their customer service, interpretation of CA gun law (magazine well perma-welded to 10 rd capacity AR's are the only CA legal AR's, ARE THEY?!), their gunsmithing, firearm transfer fees, range fees, AND their firearms prices, ALL stuck in the Stone Age.

Oh snap, did Evan's just suck at basically everything?

Evan died last year. Wifey took over, fired my favorite RO. Rentals are non-existant. Tried to ask question at 9:15pm one night (supposedly close at 10:00), all I wanted to know what a year subscription price was. Guy was a complete ahole. Yelled at me to go away - through the locked glass door.

I will NEVER, ever go to that house of dysfunction.

Did one PPT purchase there, clown with mustache kept walking off and blabbing so that it took over 1 HOUR to complete transfer.

So **** Evans. There are so many other places that are better.

I shot there and bought a couple of guns. The last time I stopped by, I spotted a Luger. I asked the kid behind the counter if I could see it. He told me he didn;t want me "fingering" the gun. I left in disgust and emailed Evan. I did not get a response. I work five minutes away. It's a shame when parents raise their kids to be arsholes.

Dang..I thought it was just me....I have found some of the older counter jockeys who hang out on the rifle side are pretty pleasant...but the young guns working the pistol & revolver display cases damn near act like Mall Ninjas.

On the plus side...Bauer's is one of the plaintiffs in a suit to overturn AB962.

I like the plus side. Yeah it was the young guns that didn't help me at all. One of the older gentlemen did. I used to like going there with my dad when I was younger, they always treated him very well. He bought many guns there in the past and he was treated poorly the last couple of times he went there. He goes to Mayfields now.

I wont be going back either.

I've had a love of firearms, mainly pistols since I was 9. I Shot my first handgun at 9, my grandfathers .32 H&R. I've been shooting for 21 years now at the ripe old age of 30. My favorite range is OC Indoor, had a membership and have spent many an hour there.

I now live 5 minutes from EGS. I've been there a few times over the last couple of years. My last visit about 9 months ago. I've never really felt welcome there any time I've visited. But today takes the taco. I needed some .45 brass to get my new press up and running so I figured I would go squeeze off a few rounds.

First, no parking, the place was packed. All 5 of the parking spots were taken. This at 2 PM on a Tuesday. So I walk in and there is some old guy sleeping in front of the counter on a stool, some lady walking around with a cigarette, and then another lady comes out from the back and asks if I'm all done.

I say, "I'm just getting started". She goes around the counter and asks if I've shot there before. I said yes. She then proceeds to ask me, "well, whats next?" I responded with a puzzled look, she then hand me the little white form to fill out and says, "you tell me what to do next, its a test to see if you've actually shot here before." I give another  and sign my name.

After I complete the form and slide it back to her, she says, "what do I need now?" I respond with, "You mean what do "I" need now?". She says, "Ill need your ID." as I am taking it out of my wallet. Then slight pause from her, and I ask for a few targets and tell her I have eyes and ears to hopefully shut her up.

She gives me the targets and fumbles for a clip and hands them to me. She takes a phone call and after realizing she didn't assign me a lane I remove my eye and ear pro and stand by the counter. As she is on the phone I gesture that I don't know what lane she wants me on. She finishes the call and asks what I need. I respond, "What lane do you want me at." She asks, "where do you want to shoot." I say, "An open lane." I cant see out of the glass and from her vantage point she waves at the lanes and says, "left, middle, or right." I say, "right" and she says lane 7. All with a snide, *****y, why are you bothering me attitude.

As I start to grab my stuff I inquired if they sell brass there. She responds as if I just kicked her poodle 20 feet and comes back with, "no, we need to keep it all cuz we reload it." Again with a *****y attitude.

I mean WTF? Why cant people just be courteous? You don't have to be sweet as pie but be courteous. When shopping or visiting a gun range or gun store one would think that you would be amongst like minded people who share a hobby, a passion for fire arms and at least be able to get civil treatment.

Turners can go to hell, and so can this place. I'm only going to OC Indoor or The Firing Line.

Funny how Turner's always get in the middle of things :D

I was thinking about this, not sure it would matter. I can see them opening the letter and then using it to light a cigarette with it.

If you're determined to complain you might consider writing to or contacting city or county code enforcement about the smoking in the shop. I'm pretty sure that would be an ordinance violation. As I stated before, you might also consider contacting the EPA or county health department about the possibility of excessive lead levels. If the place is as big a dump as described and is likely poorly maintained, it would not be surprising if they have failed to maintain the bullet trap and air filtration such that they break EPA safe levels for lead. I have heard of one range that was shut down for that.

Everytime I used to go I was always left at the counter becuase they always forgot to give me my lane number too. That lady seems pretty cold too. I never liked her. I went there a couple months ago at 8pm to squeeze in range trip and to my surprise they locked up the whole store early. I haven't gone back since. I do all my shooting at Insight Shooting Range now. However, I found a shooting range on Katella in Anaheim that only charges $7 and has free targets :)

I learned to shoot at Evan's and visited it exactly three times before deciding never to go back. Some people there were cool (I always liked Pat, and have since seen him working at Ade's), but for the most part it was just an expensive disappointment. I never liked the lady (Mrs. Carrol?) and I won't give my opinion of Evan since it's no longer polite to do so. I do wish they'd come around to the 21st century, IMO they give shooting ranges a bad name.

OC Sheriff range is pretty sweet...If the people at the counter dont who you are, they will have a cop inspect all your handguns prior to shooting (just like a check to make sure they arent loaded, and they look to be in decent working order)

Overall its pretty good there. $7 all day, a stack of about 10 million free targets and staplers. And its always dead there, even on a saturday

Evans sucks, and always has. I'm sure it must be on it's way out. Good riddance when it finally goes under.

They're probably not going anywhere: they had this reputation for poor customer service topped with a nice dollop of weapons grade FUD and some very interesting questionable "collaboration" with the Bureau of Firearms in the past (the whole welded magazine named Assault Weapons modifications) since the mid 1990's.

Obviously they have a certain segment of the populace that enjoy doing business there.

Do not ever go in there for any gunsmithing work. Not only is it a ridiculous $70 an hour (even cleaning and minor work), but they will put you on a wait list because LEO orders come first, and you will end up waiting months for them to do something as trivial as take the rust off a shotgun's magazine tube and remove the wooden rod that restricts the capacity so that it is legal to use for hunting.

I guess I'm the exception to the rule - I never had a problem there with anyone. I haven't been up there lately, but back in about 2006/7 or thereabouts I was probably in there a dozen times. I used to be up that way quite often and would stop in.

Browsed and talked pistols, did some shooting, bought lots of ammo (for a long time, Evan had about the best ammo prices around, and when others were out of stock, he always had a lot of .45 acp WinClean).

Maybe I didn't have any trouble because he was a Colt guy, and the first time I walked in, I had with me a 1966 Colt National Match 1911 in almost new condition. Anyway, he (and everyone I encountered working there) never gave me any grief.

I haven't been there in a couple years though, so I can't speak to current situation. Anyway, that was my experience - obviously others had different experiences.

only experience i had there was when i called to try and buy a handgun. this guy answered the phone and seemed bothered by the fact he had to talk to me on the phone. after I convinced him that the gun i wanted was legal to get in CA, he tells me it is not available. i ask if he can get one with hi cap mags, keep the mags and sell me the gun with no mags. he finally agrees to this. i get excited and think his rudeness can be excused for helping me out. he tells me he will lower the cost of the gun because he will keep the magazines. then he tells me the price of the gun. it was about $250 more than anyone else. i laugh at the guy, he tells me the cost has gone up because of obama. i laugh again and hang up the phone.

I wasn't treated rudely when I was there (of course I didn't have a lot of interactions other then introducing my self and asking where the meeting was being held) and I am one of the "tan" members of the forum.

I took two lessons from Chris - a RO who is was/is a Marine and at that time training local maritime shippers how to shoot the M9.

Other folks who work there are decent - even trying to help.. But a few good apples won't fix the barrel. Like you indicated, a weird mix of folks. But, it all starts at the top (i.e. a company is driven by it's management).
