Hey folks, I've got a question. Did a search, came up with...similar...situations, but not the same. A long time ago I inherited a Sig P228 from a family member. It was never transferred to me, just given.

I want to sell this thing to buy a M&P 40c, how do I go about selling it? I checked with the local PD and it is currently unregistered, didn't show up in their database. Do I need to register it with the DOJ first? PPT it to the seller?

Please let me know, thanks!

No need to register it. It will be registered to the new owner.

Just sell it through normal PPT. The PPT background check will confirm it's not a stolen pistol and it will register to the new owner.

What if it is stolen?? GASPS! do you just lose it, or do you get tossed in the slamma too?

(sorry about the ghetto tone, but its a serious question)

(sorry about the ghetto tone, but its a serious question)if it comes up stolen, the buyer is out the firearm, and the money that he paid the seller. He would need to sue the seller for the money if the seller didn't make it right.

He already checked it thru it the local PD and they had no record. If it was stolen, they would have had a record.

To the OP, just PPT it thru your FFL of choice and you are good to go.

I asked the same question sometime ago. So when You PPT a pistol to someone and the pistol is NOT in Your name it does not matter?

( for example , if someone asks You to sell their guns for them etc.)

It doesnt matter as long as you and the potential buyer's background info is GTG.

NO, that gun is worth way less since it is un-registered. I can't imagine that anyone would want to touch it with a ten foot pole. However, I like to take risks, and am willing to give you a couple hundred bucks for it. Let's meet up and do the transfer!
