The issue with AR's and AK's is the detachable mags and pistol grips right? Remove the detachable magazine (via bullet button) and keep the gun under 30" and your "rifle" is ok...

So, if I buy a 30-30 or 357 lever-gun, am I able to saw down the stock to a "birdshead" style grip provided that the gun is still 30" in overall length? No detachable mags on leverguns so is it ok?

the rifle features ban only applies to semi-auto centerfire rifles. Lever-guns don't have to worry about any features, you can put a PG on it if you want. YOu could have a detachable magazine on it AND have evil features as long as it was not a semi-auto centerfire rifle.

And there is no 30" rule that you ahve to comply with here. It must be 26" OAL in its shortest fireable configuration, and have a 16" barrel. thats basically it.

So a 16 inch barrel 357 carbine lever gun (or 30-30) with a shortened stock is ok as long as its under 26"? is this right? If so this is my next project gun.

As long as it is OVER 26" OAL, yes.

If you are going to convert the lever into a pistol grip, make sure you take out the slack in the left and right movement. when grasped as a pistol you can really get some torque on it.

Have fun.

You could always try to do a single shot exemption for one of these:

there are already CG'ers chomping at the bit for Rossi to release their new Ranch Hand so they can single-shot it and get them into the state.

The mare's leg is what I was thinking, only 26" overall. Not a "pistol grip," more like a birdshead grip. Think terminator 2 lever gun only not a 20 gauge.
