I bought a very inexpensive lower at River City Gun Exchange ($89.00 ATI) and with left over AR parts around the house can assemble a complete lower with collapsible M4 stock. Since I piggybacked the AR on another rifle purchase there was no 2nd DROS charge, I'm trying to keep this one inexpensive and as a rimfire assembly. Although it may work the Chiappa version looks too cheap - is there another rimfire upper out there that is well priced? Under $400.00 too much to hope for?

CMMG makes (http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/item/M4-LE-.22-LR-Evolution-Upper-w-F-Marked-FSB-1513) some (http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/item/Sierra-.22-LR-Upper-Receiver-w-Low-Profile-FSB-1514). I have one of those. Newbie shooter so can't comment much about quality or anything of that sort.

Thanks - that seems to be the ticket, even with the receiver finish upgrade it's under $400.00. What's it use for mags?

You can use the CMMG or Black Dog mags. Both are good. I prefer the Black Dogs if I can find them in black.

This may be an option from Atlantic Firearms:

Don't know much about it however.

Thanks, I was thinking the Black Dogs worked. Gives me something to buy in Reno next show I suppose.

Is barrel diameter on the 22 rimfire barrel the same as centerfire? Part of my reason for getting a dedicated upper, as opposed to a conversion unit only, is my understanding that a .224 diameter barrel is a bit oversized for the 22 rimfire; and the long "jump" from chamber insert to rifling probably doesn't help accuracy in the conversion unit equipped upper.

I'm not looking for "bolt action" accuracy, but I don't want a rimfire that patterns as opposed to groups.

You cannot go wrong with the cmmg upper. I started my AR hobby with a complete ar22 from them (called the Quebec). The dedicated upper is exactly that, specifically for 22lr.

I spent weeks researching how to go about building a 22lr AR and the only other company I researched that actually put R&D into this is nordic (but they are more than 400).

I haven't had one issue with mine that was rifle related, cycles everything I've fed it thus far, and is pretty damn accurate in the shirt distances I've shot at.

And yes it's got a barrel with proper 1/16 twist for the 22lr bullets

If you want something that mimics centerfire AR, the cmmg is it.

I have a blackthorne (http://akpartskits.com/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6_17&products_id=506) .22 upper and it works great. Uses BDM mags. I paid right around $300 for mine from akpartskits.com (http://akpartskits.com).

Looks like it's $349 now. Still not a bad price. Only thing to note it the upper receiver is polymer.

It does have the 1/12 twist for better accuracy with .22LR.

Blackthorne are a bunch of lying scumbags!!! Sent me an upper that wouldn't fit my Spike's lower (not even close) and didn't have the BCG or charging handle, made me pay for return shipping, then left me negative feedback in return on gunbroker calling me a bad buyer and "abusive" (after I paid with a credit card the day the auction ended). This was right before the election when you couldn't find anything and I thought I was getting such a deal! I had no idea. Pretty amazing how bad that company is and how many people have had horrible experiences with them. Go with the CMMG, they are a quality company and make some of the best 22 conversions/uppers out there.
