Please forgive this post as it may seem trivial to some.
Is it necessary, or at least a good idea, to get a receipt from the FFL for any long gun/pistol that was purchased from them (not a PPT). Thanks.

Yes, it's a good idea.
Most dealers automatically give you a copy of the DROS paperwork. If your dealer doesn't do this then just ask. He is required by law to give you a copy if you ask for one.
Some dealers are kind of disorganized and having proof that you already started the DROS process on a certain day will help if you run into a dealer that lost or misplaced all of your paperwork. In an extreme case, if your dealer dies during the 10 day waiting period, having a copy of your DROS might be the only way you can get your gun from his estate without a long delay.
99 times out of 100 you might not need a copy of your DROS. But you might as well get one. You can use it as a reminder of when your next 30 day window to purchase a handgun comes up.

Not really necessary on long gun purchases since it doesn't say anything except for number of long guns purchased, but I ask for one with handgun purchases since it has all the serial number info.

I make it a point of asking everyone is they want a copy. I've gotten split responses from the "hell no, why do I want more papers?" and "hell yes, I want as many papers as I can get!" people.

Awesome. It's been awhile since I've finished my DROS - so hopefully it wouldn't be a huge burden. I guess I could pay a visit :)
Thanks again guys for your prompt response!

There is no real reason to have a copy in the end. You own the gun, it is yours if you need the info later it can be found. Unless you sell later and it is used in a crime, well when someone might come knocking but all they got to do it go look at the 4473 forms...I say throw um away.

Since gun ownership is significant responsibility, I keep DROS and receipts of every firearm I purchase!
