View Full Version : Convince me to go featureless

09-11-2010, 5:52 PM
So back before the Federal AWB went in, I had an opportunity to get 7 USGI 30 round mags for an AR. Back then, I was way to poor to purchase a lower, and the only reason why I was able to get the 7 mags was the good old barter way. So, I stored them. Now, I just got done with my first AR build, and I didn't go featureless because I really like the ergonomics. But dang, I really dont like the BB. But to put on top of it, I cant use the standard capacity mags I have. So, I would like to tap in to the opinions of you all with the featureless rifles, and how do they compare? Do you miss the grip? Do you prefer the Exile over monster man? What about the U stock? What do you all say? Should I keep the evil or go featureless?

I've tried the Solar Tactical grip wrap and the MM. Haven't tried the Exile. If you have frequent opportunities to go out of state, the ST is easiest to return to "free state" condition - three screws, slip off the wrap, and you're good to go. With the MM, I miss the pistol grip less as the angled grip is close to a "standard" rifle stock.

I really don't have any preference between the ST and MM. Since you have full capacity mags available, it seems a shame not to use them... go featureless!

Eh evil doesn't do anything for me -

09-11-2010, 6:11 PM
Yeah, I don't think anyone could convince me to NOT go featureless... just do it! Make sure you follow ALL the rules... sometimes, folks overlook flash hiders and whatnot..

I don't miss a pistol grip too terribly. One handed operation is entirely possible with this baby. :43:

Detachable 30 round magazines baby! :D I rest my case.

30round of satisfaction or 10rd of shame??

I choose 30rd of satisfaction.

featureless...mines the monster man and I have no issues...
shot it in a POST carbine instructor's class just to work out the problems with it...
the only one I found is in one handed operation...it can get tiring to hold the gun with the gun hand only and NOT point it high...no issues really...
some of the other instructors wanted to shoot it....
stupid looks it does but perform well also...
kinda like shooting a garand... don't wrap the thumb on that one either ...

20-30-100 round mags! (smoke 'em if ya got 'em)

I recently got the Exile Hammerhead grip. I like it over the Monsterman grip. It makes one handed operation very easy and fells almost like a traditional rifle.
Just my .02

I like and use the MMG, on AKs and ARs. If youre switching from using a pistol grip, you'll get use to it after a while, especially when you dont have to find something (a tool) to drop the mag. A bullet button or mag lock on a self defense rifle/carbine, or a run-and-gun (er..) gun, is, IMHO, a fail..

I shot an AR with a U15 stock and it wasnt as bad as it looked. I liked it. The Exile Machine Hammer Head is not that bad either. It gives you lots of options.

Buy em all and try it. See what you like/prefer..

If you Live in the San Diego area I'd be glad to meet up at range and shoot a few rounds out of it to see if you like it.

Why stop at 30 rounds?

I'm up by Iron sights and would like to check out the hammer head grip, I've got some ammo and if you want I could let you shoot my AK too! Do you have a pic? I'm interested in how you setup the stock and what stock etc. I've got a ctr on my EBR

Beta mags can be your friend.

I don't have any preban standard cap mags for my AR, but if I did I would use Duraglocks (Solar Tactical) kydex grip wrap. I have one on my AK and it's great. I highly recommend one as it maintains the great ergos of a verticle grip.

Featureless isn't bad at all, you really don't even miss not being able to throw your thumb over.

Here's mine, it's not the sexiest but it's mine :)

Quality sucks cuz of the Phone.
Oh and the stickers are of a friends paintball company not the gang.

If you have the high cap mags, then at least one of your rifles needs to be featureless, thats a given.

09-11-2010, 11:48 PM
Do it man. Solar Tac fin grip all the way.

09-11-2010, 11:55 PM
I use the solar tac, they are really good, and can go from CA to free state in less than 30 seconds!

Why not?

I will not convince him to go featureless.

If you have standard cap mags it is a no brainer.

I would if I had pre-bans! But I'm 20. Do the math:[

No pistol grip, flash hider, collapsing stock etc etc are anywhere near as truly "EVIL" as a freely detachable hi-cap mag. You get used to the alternate type of grip really fast, and once you are used to freely dropping mags (esp if you have hi-caps) you will definitely not want to go back.

Plus its a good excuse to buy another rifle, one featureless and one with a locked mag, right? :43:

09-12-2010, 2:42 AM
Oh man, I thought I was gonna have to talk you out of being neutered.

09-12-2010, 4:41 AM
No!!! That is what people from other states laugh about....You take away from what the gun is supposed to look, feel, and handle like. I will deal with the shame of this state and a BB...Instead going FL means you take away from the design of the gun. Might as well take the grip off.

09-12-2010, 5:03 AM
^ how do you argue about the 10/30?? lol.

not strong enough argument. close, but no cigar. ;)

meh, let them laugh. i got dees!!

...you really don't even miss not being able to throw your thumb over.

You don't have to miss throwing your thumb over... Hammerhead's the only featureless CA-compliance product currently in production that lets you actually wrap your hand around the grip. And at $24.99 it's your least expensive option as well.

(just be sure to pin that collapsible stock!)

09-12-2010, 7:31 AM
I have a few featureless guns in the mix. Have a bunch of pre-ban 20 and 30 rd. AK and AR mags. Stocked up back in 1997-99. Have Solar Tac on my AR and AK. Like it better than MM and w/o pistol grip.

09-12-2010, 10:14 AM
I like having the option to go featureless so I assembled a dedicated featureless lower and replaced the flash hider with a muzzle brake on all my uppers so that I can just slap on the featureless lower and I'm good to go. I don't use vfg on any of my ARs so that part of it is a non issue for me.

Being limited to 10rd mags that are locked in place by FAR limits the utility of a rifle compared to not having a pistol grip. As as everything else goes, realistically speaking when will you really need a flash hider? You think you might be counter sniped? Are you going to be regularly deploying from vehicles with your rifle that will make a telescopic stock that valuable? And in some insane fantasy where these situations are in effect along with CA law, do you still value those features above freely dropped hi cap mags?

09-12-2010, 2:26 PM
When I was in California I kept all of my rifles featureless. Unless your rifle is strictly for the range and you don't do anything but shoot on a rest you shouldn't run a bb because you're waisting a perfectly good rifle with a lot of potential. Even if you are late to the game and only have ten round magazines there is no reason why you shouldn't run featureless. Plan on taking carbine course or shooting some sort of action match? Try doing that with a bullet button, most of the "evil features" are not necessary to shoot well anyway. I used MMGs on all of my featureless rifles and while it was a little odd at first to get used to it was well worth it in the end and became very comfortable, I also didn't lose much grip on the weapon as some think. I've head great things about the Hammer Head as well but don't have a need for them anymore :) I don't understand how people are boasting about how their rifles are sooo tactical when they have a locked ten rounder. It does't make sense at all... I hope you make the right decision. -Ben

Convince you to go featureless? Why? I don't see the need to convince anyone that practical is better than tacticool LOOKING. I would think that convincing someone to go to a non-detachable mag design would be harder than going featureless.

09-13-2010, 8:15 AM
With this setup, there are no missing features that I wish I had. I use the Solar Tactical grip, and don't even notice not having my thumb wrapped around the grip. Even if I could ditch the Solar Tactical, I don't think I would change anything else. Featureless FTW!

09-13-2010, 2:28 PM
Well, the BB is off my AR, as well as the grip, and I have chosen to install the Exile grip. Now, time to locate those mags I stored too many years ago and three different addresses.

This thread really helped me decide. Im getting an AK, and my dad gave me some 30 rounders back in the 90's; its one of the main reasons I'm gonna get one. But hearing that the ergonomics are still pretty decent has really been encouraging, since I don't want some unwieldy beast.

09-15-2010, 7:00 AM
U-15 or Hammerhead, for me better control over the rifle.

09-15-2010, 7:21 AM
When you attach the stock to the hammerhead it's perfect , when using it as a grip alone ( Even with my monster paws ) it's a bit long for both feel and even looks.

Luckily that is really easy to fix, just cut and shape to your liking and have it coated any color you want.

I shaped this one to have the exact feel as my Socom II , rounding all the back edges was the key.

Now I dont have all that unused plastic in the back of the hammerhead ( The plastic used to mount the stock, if using it as a grip alone none of that plastic is used and just in the way ) impeding my hand quick access to the grip.

Hey guys! A bit off topic but can a Magpul PRS securely fit over a carbine length buffer tube?

Update: OK talked to my gunsmith and he said no. An rifle length tube is required.
