Now before we start, there is no aimless bashing using the statement "all cheap scopes suck". i do believe you get what you pay for,but i also believe in better quality within the same price range. not all of us would like to shell out $$$$ for top dollar scopes.

Basically, i am in the market for a 3-9x42 (or similar) Compact tactical style scope and i have come across a few different options. I am looking for honest feedback based upon personal experience with the scope, brand, or company as a whole, also some other recommendations for similar scopes within this price range.

The first is the NcStar ultra compact tactical scope, i actually had the opportunity to test this scope, this thing looks great with its ultra compact design and ruby red objective lens, but i have to tell you, i was very disappointed with its performance. There was allot of parallax even at very close range, and the picture quality is blurry at anything above 8x at close range, but this is just my opinion and i am still considering it based on the fact that it looks so darn good, and because i cannot make a proper comparison with no personal experience with the other scopes.

Next is the Barska contour, i have never tested this particular scope but i do have 2 other barskas, and have nothing but good things to say about them.

last is the Ncstar markIII, this seems to be a very popular scope for tactical rifle owners and i would like to get some feedback on this one.

i have a mkIII 1.25-4 power. it seems to work great, very clear, very bright.
have put about 3-400 rounds through it and holds zero and BDC is accurate with 55g. only gripe would be the illum. reticle is meant for daytime only, wayyyy too bright for night use.

i do however have a buddy with a 2-7 mkIII, and it is a tiny bit blury at the outside diameter of the sight picture... however, it did not stop him from smoking a grey fox at about 100m, at night with me holding a light!

also, another small gripe with the mkIII is it only has a target turret for windage... the elev. turret is for the BDC, then you remove the top cap to zero it, i suppose this is OK because you set it first lock it down, and now you move the BDC turret for elev. but then id rather not have the windage knob exposed... very small gripe i know, especially when they are around 100 bucks I think they are the best 'tactical' optic for less than a few hundred for sure.

the mounts on those two top scopes are basically airsoft junk, but the mkIII is a beefy piece of metal that cams down hard and that can be adjusted tighter as well.

i feel if you need more than 1-4 power on a compact tactical setup, you should forget it and step up to a 3-9 hunting scope, spend 150-250 on a nikon or leupold hunting scope, it would serve you better. try to look through them before you buy. the barska stuff has horrible glass in the compact setups i have seen.

I bought NC Star glass to mount on my gas powered MKII Carbine. I think it was $14 well spent. :p

well while we are on the subject, This is one of the scopes i already own, it a barska fixed 4x28, practically no parallax, crystal clear picture. what do you guys think?? (the only thing that bothers me is the ultra small objective lens, the larger side is actually the eyepiece)

You said we could also recommend other scopes within the price range. What is the price range you are considering?

None of the samples mentioned above, but I had a 2-6x28 compact with the P4 reticle on my AR. Have fired a couple of hundred rounds and it held zero all the time even though I keep adjusting the elev dial for 25 - 50 - 100 yard targets.
It now sits on my Marlin 60 after I got the GRS. But Im thinking of putting it back on my AR since its way lighter than the GRS.

100-180$ give or take, but it needs to be something compact, im not a big fan of 12-13 inch rifle scopes on a .22 carbine id say 9 inch max

like i said, for less than 300 bucks, the only 'tactical' scope i would go with would be the mIII 1-4 power. it is a decent setup. i do have much more expensive hunting and long range tactical setups as well as an eotech, so i know what quality looks like- but that scope serves decent in its application. I would not consider those other scope the OP mentioned, or any 'compact' high power scope- they will be airsoft grade.

What's wrong with big scopes on 22s?

Here is a good compact scope. Brother's got one on his Ruger Target Tactical 10/22 and it's a nice and compact scope for $130

I have the NCStar SF642R mounted on my Hipoint 995TS 9mm and at 100yrds it's clear as day, it lacks all the super cool dodads of the big name scopes but i bought it for $30 and 600 rounds later it gets the job done just fine.........

edit
but let me add this i wouldn't put it on my AR

I had a Barska and NCStar for my WASR when I was in WA...The Barska IMO was better optically. It was only 4x but did the job well.

Both companies make decent range/plinking toys, but if you plan on using your rifle for anything else like home defense, save you money and buy something from another trusted manf. If you dont like the higher end price range these are a few good alternatives

Just used the same website for a quick refence, I would shop around and try to find them cheaper. Just some food for thought.
