Apologies to Pathfndr for repeating this thread:
Come on up to Sacramento Valley Shooting Center this weekend, Scoped ARs shoot in the F/TR class:

September 11 and 12 - Folsom Special (300, 500, 600, 800 yards)

Folsom Special course of fire will be 2 sighters and 10 or 15 for record at each yard line. Bring 70 rounds.
Meet at Culbertson Cove (the building/camping area below the 1000 yard line) between 7:00-7:30 for squadding. Cost is $20.
Here's a link to the address/map: http://www.sacvalley.org/contact.html

All are prone matches, so all shooting is on the ground. All types of rifles are welcomed (except .50's) - there will be F-class, Target Tifle (F/TR) and possibly Tactical awards if there are enough competitors in each class. Muzzle brakes will be allowed, but those using them will be given much grief. Each shooter will be pulling targets and scoring throughout the day. After each shot, the target will be pulled and marked. Bring water and a snack.
This is a semi-informal match, with much harmless banter and fun. All matches are NRA registered, so if you shoot a National Record, it will be officially recognized. You can also become NRA classified, if you shoot a couple of these matches. If you have never shot at mid to long-range before, just show up with a 100, 200, or 300 yard zero. There will be plenty of help with comeups from there. Typically there's a BBQ immediately after the match. Hamburger or hotdog and chips and drink for $2.

I shot at last month's Match - out to 1K - learned a lot and shot well for a first-timer. But I was the only guy shooting an AR in F/TR! I need some company on the line with all those customized bolt-guns!

So you think I can hit the 1000 yard target with an EOTech :D I wish I could hit a target out at 1000 yards using 55grn FMJBT's ;)

09-10-2010, 8:29 PM
I'll probably go again on Sunday, but not with an AR ;)

Killshot did great with his AR. All the ARs did better then I would have thought a semi 223 could do at those Ranges . Had a great first time at long range shooting .Everyone was more then helpfull and I will go out there again.

Is this every weekend. Or how often?

09-11-2010, 7:28 PM
just got up after crashing out on the couch...

Other than shooting way better than last month, getting mattt on paper with wag dope using the iPhone's Ballistic FTE was pretty sweet. :D

remainder of Sac's highpower schedule:

October 9 - 80 Shot RMC 200, 300 and 600 yds.
10 - Three 600 yd. Matches

November 13 Palma Match 800, 900 and 1000 yds.
14 1000 yd. Any/Any and Any/Iron

December 11 Folsom Special 300, 500, 600 and 800 yds. (repeat of 9/11 cof)
12 Palma Match 800, 900 and 1000 yds.

Is this every weekend. Or how often?

Normally, once a month. (and I'll second what Phish says, the Ballistic FTE app is a good one)

The next Match is October 9th; that one will consist of three 20-shot relays all at 600yds. A great distance for newcomers.
It was a really great day there today, no wind in the morning, light wind but changing directions in the afternoon. 86 degrees.
It was nice to see three new ARs on the line. One was a Les Baer another was a Stag Varminter & they were both shot well by first timers.

I used 77gr and 80.5gr Bergers over 24 and 24.5 grains of Varget. No problem staying supersonic to 1K for the 80.5s out of a 24" 1/8 WOA barrel. The Stag shooter had a 20" 1/9 using 68gr Black Hills factory ammo. No problem getting to 800, either. (suck on that, Stag haters)

So, load up 70 rounds and bring your scoped AR in October. (Bolt-gun new-guys welcome, too)

Tomorrow I'll add some videos I took today.

phish all I know is that phone gizmo told me how many clicks to come up from 300 to 800. What ever it was worked. I am a caveman and dont understand such things .Thanks

Killshot after seeing the ARs today I am dusting of the mini 14 target model and puting it back in service. It will prouble end up a disaster but I will shoot it in the oct 9th match.

09-11-2010, 8:26 PM
Matt, bring it! But why you no happy with bolt-gun? The Mini should work but I believe Kel-Tecs and AKs are not allowed.
('cause it's hard to shoot when you're laughing so much:p)

Good to see you there today!

I had a good laugh this morning when I asked Phish where he thought all the Calguns AR guys were:
He said Zombie Hunting......

09-11-2010, 8:55 PM
Sounds like you guys had a great time. I would love to get out there with my Stag varminter. Unfortunately I have a prior commitment for the weekend of the 9th, but what about November 14th? Will scoped AR's be allowed?

09-11-2010, 11:27 PM
what about November 14th? Will scoped AR's be allowed?

Scoped ARs w/bipods compete in the F T/R class and are very welcome.
A little info on the NRA categories: http://www.nrahq.org/compete/RuleBooks/HPR/hpr-w22.pdf

The November match starts at 800yds, which can be a challenge (understatement) if you don't have good dope. But! if you know the speeds you're pushing most good ballistic calculators should at least get you on the target for your "sighter" shots (usually 2) but it's up to you to make corrections to get centered into the higher scoring rings. Then there's the wind. Or mirage...:43:

I don't want to discourage anyone. I was the FNG two matches ago. Come out, you'll learn and have a lot of fun. Great people.

I'll be there one of these days. I'm getting my new AR this wednesday. 18' WOA SPR barrel on it 1/7 twist so I'm hoping I can load something nice up for it. I'm bolt gun shooter for the most part but I want to have some fun with the AR.

Killshot The mini is close but it might not be done by the oct 9th because I ordered a new adjustable gas block ,scope ,rings and dont know if it will all be right by the 9th. If not I will bring my CZ 308 or my m1a
