Ok guys i have talked to JD about doing a run of lowers with either the Bear or state calguns engraving. I am looking to see if there is any interest. If so post which one you like better and if you would be interested in buying one. If i get enough interest they will do the run. This is provided CGN is ok with this. I have PMed a few times with no response so maybe this will catch some attention. I will organize the group buy as soon as we have enough interest and everyone is in agreement.

Group Buy started in commercial marketplace. Read instructions and please PM me with your info. Link below

I want a bear.

Question is...what is the plan on donating to calguns for such an endeavor? this is the 3rd or 4th attempt to remake the calguns lowers (I tried as well) and no one has been able to make it happen past JD. JD will make lowers all day long for teh right amount of money, but what will calgun's benefit? Just a note for people who think these will be cheaper than the other lowers that are currently available. I don't think calguns will approve another run unless there is motivation to allow the use of calguns.net.

you could probably make them without "calguns.net", but that would be wrong and wouldn't be as desirable to me. just my .02.

These would be identical to the last CGN production run by Kaiser, made on the same equipment with the same CAM routines, just with "JD" rather than "Kaiser" manufacturer's info above the FCG pins.

Already have a state outline... want a Bear!

If it has a Cali symbol and it's priced right, you could count me in for 5.

The last guy with that Florida company flaked out on making a Calguns lower and stopped responding to inquires in the thread he started about it. Guess he determined there was a lack of interest or some obstacle that made it not worthwhile and not worth bothering to share with everyone.

Agreed, but considering that Riflegear is currently selling the JD lowers for anywhere from $99 to $120, adding a $10 or $20 donation to CGN/CGF would still have them at an attractive price.

IIRC, on the last run, the Kaiser lowers were in the $160-$180 range, and pretty much every other lower on the market was already $160+, so I would imagine that this run would still be competitive.

That thread was a clusterf*** from the start.
It started out calling it a "Calguns" lower, simply because it was for CGN participants. There was no intent to provide benefit to CGN/CGF, and no intent to include CGN/CGF on the rollmarks.
It started, not with "this is what we are doing", but rather, with tossing 20 designs out for a vote. Ultimately, the "Umbrella" design won out with the most votes (but far from a true majority).... so right there, you've got a situation with 100 people interested, and 80 having voted for a "losing" design.
Then a representative from Umbrella came into the thread and indicated that they would enforce their trademark. So now the last 20 buyers were SOL for their choice.

But even if it had happened, gotta remember that half of the people that indicate interest are going to fade back into the woodwork when it's time to show the money.

The problem with the proposed lowers since the last Kaiser run has been that they were small scale and without support from a manufacturer.
Without the run being sponsored by a manufacturer, it ends up being limited to 1 or 2 FFLs, with everyone else having to have the lower transferred in... there's another $50 on the price.

With JD directly involved, they already have a dealer network so Calgunners from all over the state can have their shop order one directly and avoid the FFL transfer fees.

The more "political" or abnormal you make it, the fewer people will want it. Here's to hoping that they stick with tried and true engravings. Transfer fees are going to ruin this from a financial standpoint, but it's good to show support.

In response to the want for different logos (ie. state w/hammer, star...) These are good ideas but we are going to stick to the basics. As of now, if this materializes (99% sure it will) the logos will be either the bear with star and circle (see logo at top of any CGN page) or the state outline with CalGuns below. So far its looking like the bear logo is winning but if we get enough interest in both i will try to get both run. Thanks!

are they going to dealers like the last run? Riflegear perhaps

Cokebottle
09-11-2010, 8:20 PM
That's going to be the issue.

Whether you can get dealers on board like last time, to avoid the transfer fees for out of the area buyers.
That's where this differs from other group buys where a 3rd party is doing the engraving/custom work.

JD has a large dealer network all over California. The original Kaiser CGN lowers were sold in San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles County, Sacramento, the Bay area, and many, many other areas.

Any FFL who carries the JD product line would be able to order these, so it would just be the normal $25 DROS plus tax.

I am for the bear. And I'd be interested, pending price and a kick in for Calguns. The one thing I would like is for the design to be slightly different than the original. Just enough so that you can tell the difference. That way the people who bought the first ones still have "1st generation" lowers, and don't feel like they are getting gyped. Besides, having a slightly different design means one more lower for people to collect...

No need for a different design to differentiate between "generations". The original run of these lowers were manufactured by Kaiser Defense, and marked as such. Kaiser Defense has since split and if this lower actually happens, it will be manufactured by JD Machine Tech.

A consensus needs to be reached on the markings.

Convincing JD Machine to make a run of the bear lowers and a run of the state outline lowers is probably doable. Convincing them to do half and half on "Calguns" and "Calguns.net" and then divide it up further with different caliber markings or adding a Soviet-esque star to the state outline are the types of things that kill these projects before they even get started. More labor = higher price = you guys whine and don't buy them = manufacturers won't want to work with us again.

I agree. The indecision is what always stalls and eventually kills these types of proposals.

Just judging by the pretty conclusive poll results, I say just stick with the original bear rollmark with "Calguns.net" and the same "MULTI-CAL" markings. Only change would obviously be the manufacturer marking, from Kaiser Defense to JD Machine. This design sold very well last time, I don't see any reason to mess with it.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b78/slick_711/DSC01208.jpg

If they're willing to do another one, I'd suggest modifying the state outline rollmark or just designing a new one. The original state rollmark obviously wasn't as big of a hit.

If price is on par with riflegear, in for at least one with the bear logo with/without calguns. Definitely no ".net".

I'm assuming (based on the info posted already and the previous GB), Price of lower itself should be on par with the price of any other JD lower, but you have to add the fact that these will be calguns.net lowers and an additional amount will be added on to the price as a donation back into calguns.net.

While everyone wants one, it needs to be understood that these are not run of the mill lowers and to be able to get one, you need to pay a premium and in this case it's in the form of a donation to calguns.net.

I really hope the people saying "depending on price" aren't expecting these lowers to cost ~$99; if they are they're going to be very disappointed..

The original run of Calguns lowers was initially offered at $180 (cost of a KD lower at the time was $160 + the $20 donation to CGN).

Understood.

Is there a way to price the the lower in the form of "cost on the lower" + "donation to calguns". I would like to donate up to $25 regardless of the JD lower price. I'm wondering what would the price be w/o the donation part, which will be the deciding factor.

My "depends on price" means that I expect to pay a reasonable amount for the lower and the additional donation to Calguns. Considering that JD lowers are typically going for $99-129, I would be happy with something in the $140-150 range. I would be even happier if it were lower. I will NOT, however, be "in" if the price goes much above that. Remember, there is sales tax and the DROS on top of that. That is another $35-40 that gets added on to the bottom line on our end. I am not going to end up paying 2x as much for just a logo. If it isn't a reasonable price, I'll just get a regular JD lower and make another donation on my own.

Ok, so it seems most people want a bear lower with Calguns on it. I'm down for that too.

I'd like to see the price schedule they have for 30, 50, 75, 100 lowers. That would be nice. I'm pretty sure that we are gonna do more than 30, but it would be nice to see how much the price goes down the more we order.

And yes, definitely in for the $25 donation to Calguns to be included and hopefully under $160. Hopefully these can be sent to FFLs and we can just DROS them without paying a big transfer fee as well.

This is a much more reasonable expectation, I agree. ~$120-130 tops for a JD Machine lower, tack on the extra $20 that will get donated to CGN puts a reasonable estimate for this run of lowers at ~$140-150. I would be OK with that price.

My comment was more directed at people who may be expecting the price to be around $99 because they see vendors selling JD Machine lowers for $99 right now.

Hey guys just wanted everyone to know im still here and working on getting this done. I just need to go down to JD and discuss terms with them. They had a show in Ventura this weekend and i was busy today so it didn't work out for either of us today. As soon as we get all the details worked out i will post more info. Please keep all the feed back coming, it is all useful. What i do know, is there will be a donation added to the price of the lower. I will not comment as to how much at this point. I also know the prices will be reasonable. Thanks for all the input!!

Okay, to be clear, I'd be in for a Bear, preferably the original design (unless Kaiser still holds some kind of rights to the original CGN rollmarks), in the $140-$160 range. That's $20 for Calguns, and $20-$40 extra for this being a limited production run.

I don't think this is a traditional GB per se.... I think this is JD agreeing to do a limited production run to benefit the entire forum, distributed through their existing dealer network.

GBs on serialized lowers is always a pain because the FFL transfer fees makes it "not worth it".

People can make there own choice if they would like to wait for this to materialize (which it will) or if they dont want to wait they can buy something different. No, they've gone bad because people lost interest because the organizer wasn't organized and it quickly became apparent that it was a pipe dream, or they couldn't figure out how to "deliver the goods" without FFL fees eating everyone up.... or in the case of the last one, it was called "Calguns lower" in the thread, but everyone voted and the winner.... by plurality, but not by majority, was the "Umbrella" design... then the rep from Umbrella came into the thread indicating that "we" could not use his logo and he would defend his property if we did.
Those GBs also were not formally sanctioned Calguns products. So far, as far as I know, there have been only 3 previous official Calguns lower production runs that were done with the approval of Kest.

This is not an ordinary group buy... this is another limited production run by JD, similar to when Kaiser ran the previous Calguns lowers 2 years ago.
Kest's blessing is a guarantee that this WILL happen, and people aren't going to "lose interest".... Everyone has been screaming for "bear" lowers since the last of them were sold out last December.

I'd love one of these. Even though I don't have the money I would definitely buy one. I always see builds with the old ones and get jealous

Ok, question from total newb to ar builds.

1) What does a basic AR build cost?

2) Is this lower "flexible" to different ammo types including 9mm? (I might go with 2)

3) Any other concerns I should have for a first build?

1 - basic budget build can be around $800 complete - some people have spent as little as $700. just depends on the deals at the time

2 - yes...will work with any caliber they make an upper for

3 - just follow the flow chart and how-to build guides

Thanks Munkeeboi. Man these things are costly. Is a completed AR rifle worth more than the sum of the parts?

No.

It is nearly always cheaper to buy something completed.
Think about a car or a motorcycle.... it would cost many times the price of the vehicle to buy the parts from the dealer and assemble it in your garage, even though the finished product might be identical to what's in the showroom.

The advantage of building your own is that you can "make it yours".
If you go rock-bottom cheapest completed rifle, it's going to be basically a 16" clone of an M16A2 or A4. Fixed front sight, plastic handguards, non-adjustable stock.
You could probably build your own for about the same price.
But for a few hundred more, you can have a quad rail, telescoping buttstock, folding sights, more comfortable grip, etc....
All of those things on a completed rifle would probably be a couple of hundred cheaper than DIY, depending on how it is put together.

If you have Riflegear do the "DIY" for you with specified parts, then it'll cost about the same as DIY.
