hey folks, pardon my ignorance in advance

my buddy just bought a new remington 700 and he wants to buy a scope for it.the salesman at turners is talking him into buying a leopold vxi 39x40 for $229 so he wants to know my opinion

i dont own a long range rifle (yet) so i dont know enough about long range scopes to help him out with any information.

all i do know is that it doesnt have click adjustments for windage and elevation and in my opinion it doesnt look like enough scope for that rifle. am i wrong?

and if so what would be a good inexpensive scope for such a rifle, hopefully under $350

thanks in advance

3-9 is fine, seems like a good price too. But no clicks...definitely lame. Check countersniper optics for their overrun models. I have one....fantastic.

What kind of 700? Deer rifle, Varmint, Tactical?

Have a look at these:

http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-Scopes-C1719.aspx

For $299 for the fixed power models, they are a great deal and you can always sell it later for about the same money if you want to upgrade.

ive got a vx1 2-7x33, and it is fantastic. i love it. of course, my rifle is for killing adorable bambi creatures, and not for super-awesome-tactical-sniper-counter-precision-murder-death-kill, so i dont need a giant lens or a million times magnification. i like having 2x magnification, because then i dont get lost when i shoulder the weapon to murder cuddly forest animals.

(ah, the sauce is starting to work her magic... life is good. :D)

Bushnell 10X mil mil or a Super Sniper 10X if he wants a tactical-type scope, used leupold 4x, 6x, or 3-9 if he wants a hunting scope. Those would be my picks anyways.

That's why I asked if it was a hunting, varmint or tactical one (the hunting one has a lighter barrel, varmint is 24 or 26 medium/heavy, and the tactical is a 20 bull if I remember right).

For under $300, Super Sniper by SWFA. Dumb name, great glass for the price.

Just keep in mind that when it comes to glass, you usually get what you pay for. I've seen it happen and heard all the horror stories about ****ty optics.

I've heard that Vortex and Nikon scopes are decent for the money.

Best deal in a scope right now is the Redfield brand (made by Leupold in Oregon). They are a loss leader to build up the name now that Leupold is making them. You can find the 3x9x40 for @ $250 depending on where you buy it.

They are Leupold VX I scopes with the Redfield name on them.

Try Optics Planet, they have everybody's optics for good prices and fast delivery.

I have a 700 SPS Varmit with a millett TRS 1 on it. It came with the gun when I bought it, but so far I am really happy with it. It is very clear and has some nice features. I recommend it.

Very popular scope with silhouette shooters and other long range competitors.

This is what I will be buying when I decide to scope my rifles.

Cant go wrong with a Super Sniper by SWFA or Bushnell 3200 Mil-dot 10x either will work, the Bushnells are cheaper though.

Nikon buckmaster is a really great deal. Super clear glass 4.5-14 magnification and paralax adjuatment for $250 to $300 can't be beat.

I own two one on a ar10 and one on a ar15 both hold absolute zero and are bright and clear as a scope that cost three times as much for the same features. Also has a lifetime warranty.

Winner. This scope is pretty money for the price. It is what my friend uses and I will be honest it is easy to use, clear optics, great reach with mag, good eye relief, a great deal if you do not want to spend thousands on a scope.

When this question pops up the two scopes that are overwhelmingly recommmended are the Super Sniper 10x and the Bushnell 3200 10x. Both have decent glass, tons of adjustment, large turrets, and hold up to a fair amount of abuse.

.mil contracts. Some of them were normally 8000.00 (the price of 2.5 S&B's) but marked down to 5 or 600.00. They must have a ton of those "over runs" because no military anywhere seems to be using them:rolleyes:

The Leupold VX1 at best would be a decent "hunting scope."

For shooting at out the range, the VX1 lacks the ability to reset the turret to zero, the adjust elevation and windage, not to mention the friction clicks to zero the rifle just plain sucks.

The Bushnell and SWFA are definitely top picks for his price range.

Also, check out the Vortex Viper models. Good glass and price.

with the remingtom 700 what would you guys say the effective range would be for an intermediate shooter?

i know the gnarly shooters could probably use it out to 1000 yds +, but how bout a regular shooter?

You never know until you try. First time at 500+ yds seems like a long ways off. But once you do it you see its possible. Try and get into one of the long range clinics available.

How about prostaff 3-9x40 BDC, currently is $140-$30 rebate at amazon? It's a decent scope I'm adding to my AR for plinking up to 300 yd.

I picked up a new leupold vx-ii 3-9x40 on ebay for $240

I also got pri steel base n rings for $40 and new hs precision stock for $50 (coming in the mail today)

If you look on ebay you can get great deals

Sometimes people sell stuff they have no idea is worth money and mislabel it so no one shows much bid interest
