Hey guys, I'm looking for a free floating handguard for my ar-15. I'm going to be running at 14.5" barrel and I would like to run a 12" handguard. I love the way it looks with a 14.5" Barrel. I love how the Daniel Defense AR15 Lite Handguard looks but I don't know how if I can justify paying over $300 for a handguard. Can anyone else recommend one similar to the 12" Daniel Defense Free Floating Lite Handguard?

I run a YHM Diamond Series forearm I like. If you want a cheap handguard, hogue makes passable ones. What style are you looking for?

Sorry I wasn't very clear in my question. I went with a 14.5" barrel on my ar-15 and I like how the 12" handguards look on the 14.5" barrels. Just looking for suggestions on hardguards.

midwest industries has one for pretty cheap I think, but I went with the DD lite and I feel it was worth the money

Midwest Industries are good as well as YHM etc

The thing is, if you want the best you gotta pay - there really is nothing like the Daniel Defense rails when it comes to the narrow width, low weight, and general awesomeness. If you don't need a quad rail the Troy TRX with the single top rail is kind of cool. The YHM rails are a bit too large and round for some people's tastes, but they are the most affordable. I kind of like the look of the SWS rails too (used on Noveske Recce builds) but they are going to cost about the same as the DD lite rail.

I really like the free float tubes from JP/Viking tactical. They can be had in the sub 200 range.

Troy TRX Extreme 11" Battlerail, about $180 or so at Riflegear.
It's basically a FF tube with a full top rail (no gap at the receiver joint), but it includes two 2" and one 4" attachable rail sections that can be mounted to the sides/bottom.

Kinda nice to be able to mount a laser and tac light and still avoid the "cheese grater" handguard.... without having to buy rail covers and make the thing bigger than a can of Cambell's Chunky.

hahahah general awesomeness. Well I guess I'll just have to go with the DD Lite Rail so my gun can be awesome. I get what you mean though when you say you get what you pay for. From what I've heard is the DD rail systems are top quality though.

The Spikes Tactical 12" BAR rail is probably going to be the most bang for your buck.

Spikes will sometimes run a discount code, check around for the code.

DD Lite is the way to go! I have the exact setup you're going for on one of my uppers.

My first free float was a YHM lite and I hated them. They are thick, bad locking system and felt and looked cheap. Also required proprietary tools.

I changed to a Midwest Industries and really liked them. Solid lock up, but they were thick and heavy and required loctite.

I had a DD Lite for a short time. I had issues mounting them on my billet upper. The locking system was very tight, it was high quality. I didn't like the proprietary tools, also I didn't need nor use the rail space so I ditched it.

I have ended up at the VTAC TRX Extreme made by Troy and I am very happy I made that decision. Very light, very thin, and an easy install. Required a small amount of cutting to fit it to my billet upper but no proprietary tools. One single rail along the top was all I needed. If I ever need more rail space I can just bolt the extra rails on.

I run a 12" LaRue Tactical rail on by 16" 6.8 AR.

I love the QD points on both sides.

I had a Midwest Industries on my first 5.56 build and it was was way out of spec, couldn't get XTM panels to snap together and had to heat up regular rail covers to get them to fit. So glad I spent good money on the LaRue rail.

I'll definitely be gettng a 13.2" for my BCM 5.56 14.5" build.

I have the Daniel Defense Omega X 12.0 FSP rail on my 14.5 rifle and I love it. If you want that slim look and feel DD is the way to go.

Remember that the more expensive rails you buy the more attack points you get, you also get defense points and your speed/accuracy is also amped the more expensive it gets. ;)

but imo, I do like DD.

Troy TRX Battle Rail Extreme, we sell a lot of these. The 13" gives you a nice sight radius. The 13" is also lighter than a Samson 7" quad rail found on the Stag 2HT.

IMO, for the parameters that a 14.5" barrel was designed (<200y), I'd find little benefit in free floating the barrel.

For me it was more for the longer reach. Even with my small frame (5'8"), the standard carbine handguards are waaay to short for me. Not to mention getting burned on the FSB and the standard handguard cap!

That does make sense for those with gorilla arms. :)

I'll buy your 4" section.
I picked up an AFG and it's 6", and I'd like to use the sling mount, so I need a little over 6" total.

I run a 7 inch rail on my 14" since i dont have gorilla arms and i basically used magpul's technique of using my forward grip as a reference to grip the handguard way up at the gas block with thumb forward. Works excellent for me

I cant imagine you shoot like that without gloves, because before I went to a 12"rail, the glass block would get so hot I'd burn the **** out of my hand/fingers, and get freakin blisters.

Usually i use gloves if im running drills and throwing out lots of rounds quick...if im plinking or hunting a lot of the time i dont bother with the gloves

yeah, i wish more of the manufacturers would show each model they have built with the specific handgaurds they sell. all find on the net are pics of 9 and 13 troy battle rails . i took a chance on the 11inch and loved it. i put it on my midlength. i recently ordered some MI 12 inchers that i will use on my next build. i think they are gonna look awsome. here is video of my troy equipped delton upper.

YHM Diamond, spectre length with spectre gas block - Love it.

Original YHM carbine length quad rail w/YHM rail height gas block - Love it, but it's ugly.

Troy MRF-308, YHM low pro gas block - Hated the handguards and installing the roll pin into the low pro gas block was probably the hardest thing I've ever done on any AR.

Retro Triangle handguards - Love em.

I'm going to take a stab at DD for my next rail purchase, but so far I feel like YHM is the best bang for the buck.
