I recently purchased a Canon high definition video camera and would like to edit some of the video's I recorded. In the past, at least 8 years ago, I utilized Adobe Premiere to edit digital video from my Song digital video camcorder. The Canon produces AVCHD files. What is the best software to ulutize for this type of file? In addition, what is the system requiremnst that ensure the smoothest editing. Thanks.

AVCHD files can be a pain. Supposedly, iMovie will handle them well on the mac, as long as it's coming FROM THE CAMCORDER. For the Sony at least, it gets twitchy if you just give it the raw .mts files.
I have a friend that uses this version of Sony's Vegas Movie studio for his Canon AVCHD camera:
I use Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 for HD editing. It supports AVCHD format. Will be upgrading to CS5 soon for 64-bit exploitation.
As far as specs are concerned, get the most CPU speed, cores, RAM, and fast storage you can afford, and run a 64-bit editing app and OS.
