View Full Version : Whats your home defense weapon?

Sorry if this is a dupe and MODS can delete if so but I was just curious as to what you fellow calgunners use to protect your home and family. I know everyone owns tons of guns but whats your weapon of choice for when things go bump in the night? I like to keep my Glock 17 with Streamlight TLR-1S with me everywhere in my apartment. I don't holster it but I like to keep it an arms distance away especially when I'm on my thrown (aka bathroom) cause that's when I'm most vulnerable lol. I keep it loaded with Remington Golden Sabers 124gr. +P only because it's all the gunstore had. I'd like to get some Buffalo Bore +P+ 124gr. (1300fps, 461 energy) ammo whenever I'm not to lazy to order it.
I also keep a Maverick88 loaded with 00 buck handy for just incase.

What do you guys use for home defense? Shotgun, handgun or rifle and what type of load? Pictures are also welcome of course.

In the living room coffee table: Beretta PX4 in .40 cal loaded with 10 rounds of 180gr Winchester Supreme PDX1 pared with the $10 Costco tac light
Bedside gun: 16" AR-15 loaded with 10 rounds of 55gr Hornady TAP with a Mag-light XL100 mounted

I keep a Sig P229R in 40 S&W loaded with Winchester Supreme Elite 165 grain jacketed hollow points readily available when I'm home. I am considering a light and/or light/laser combo for it, but haven't made up my mind whether I want to go down that road. I just picked up a Glock 19 (Gen 3) yesterday, and I suppose it's possible that a stellar performance at the range tomorrow could earn it a place in the lineup...at least as a backup! These threads never get old by the way.

First line of defense is two 70 lbs German Shepherds and an 80 lb Lab.

Second line of defense is a Trap champion wife with a 12 ga pump. (Your only hope is to stand still.)

I don't think I need a third line of defense.

Mine is a 686-plus seven shot .357 (six inch barrel).

That light hanging under the barrel is what the bad guy will be shooting at when he returns fire......if you are aiming it will be aligned with your eye.

In your home, darkness is your ally because you know where everything goes.

Yes, and no. When you come in from the dark, and are hit with a light, it is incredibly difficult to see. I prefer to have a light with my firearm.
That being said, I have a Remington 700 with 3" OO Buck, and a XD 9mm(with nightsights) with Federal Hollowpoints.

Right now it's a Glock 36, Glock 30, and Kimber Ultra CDP II (.45ACP).

However... I am making the switch to FN FiveseveN as my main SHF home
and business defense... the Glock 36, 30 and Kimber will be stategic hidden
back-up.

I'm not paranoid... but, I will say this... an intruder BETTER BE paranoid come
into my place tryin' to mesk with me and my business... I'll tell ya that :excl:

I received the FiveseveN yesterday, but ran into a friend at work... well, he's
buying it. I'll order another one for me on monday :)

I don't think I agree with this idea. Unless you are using night vision gear to check your house, you are going to need to identify any target and white light is what you'll need to do that.

Plus, the weapon mounted light may just be an auxiliary to a handheld light.

Are you using some other method of identifying targets that you may use deadly force against?

Given the current tone from our President for political correctness I have decided if someone were to break into my house, I will engage in diplomatic discourse, in a round table format. Try to embrace our common philosophy, and hash out our differences where we may disagree. As a citizen of the United States, I believe I need to act responsibly and become more tolerant of other people's point of view, even if their goal is the plundering of my property and safety.

Should we be unable to meet common ground, I will elect to either discharge a Sig 226 9mm with 124gr Gold Dot HP, or a 12 gauge 870 with #4buckshot.

Yes & No also, if the intruder has a flash light and already was using it, the effect your trying to make wont make that much of a difference neither. In any case you both flash your lights at eachother.

Itll all boil down to who uses the right technique for the appropriate occasion.

First line: location, a criminal would have to be an idiot(more than average) to try to break into a place with the only way in or out being a narrow, easily covered staircase when there are nice, easily accessable houses with anti-gun bumperstickers on the cars in the driveways.

Assumeing the criminal is dumber than average: Mossberg 500 security(7+1) model is my go to, with a gp100 6 inch as a backup for now, probably switch to a CZ 75 sp-01 after it gets out of jail.

Good defensive perimeter (eg: alarm, strong doors, rose bushes by the windows, motion lights, etc) dogs (early warning). The idea is to slow them down & basically tell them to move to an easier target.

Transfer your favorite handgun to a small Gun Vault by the bed before going to sleep. Just put the handgun back in the safe in the morning.

We have a G19 & a G26 as our primary firearms.

First line of defense is two 70 lbs German Shepherds ....

I only have one 70# GSD. After reading this, I suspect I might be 'under-armed'...
I like to keep my 14" Chainsaw as a back-up for the 'close quarters' work. It's a little messy, but I do not worry about follow-up shots. Gas engine still works if the BG cuts the electricity at the box.
If they get past the Dog and the chainsaw, my Ruger Revolver should terminate the threat.

I like to keep it an arms distance away especially when I'm on my thrown (aka bathroom) cause that's when I'm most vulnerable lol.

You take a gun with you to the bathroom in your own home?!?!?!?

Am I the only one who finds this surprising?

Maybe my sheltered, suburban life has made me soft, but I've never felt the need to be armed when pinching a loaf, regardless of where I am.

German Shepherd/Boxer, OC Spray/Bat by the door, and USP.40 w/ night sights and TLR-3 w/ lots of mags.

For some reason, I don't think of my Hawk 982 as my first go to weapon of choice. It seems too bulky, and because I don't have a gun safe, I usually don't even bother keeping it loaded.

I hide loaded mags around my place so I can load my HK practically anywhere.

I keep my sliding door open becuase we have no AC so I need the airflow. Someone could hop the fence when Im doing my dirty business or taking a shower and if I didnt have it with me id be screwed. I dont know what the odds are of me getting robbed with my pants down or showering but I'm not gonna take that chance. Id rather be prepared then bleeding to death on the toilet/shower from gunshot wounds because I decided to leave my gun in another room

My teenage daughter goes to her friend's house often. The Dad is a Sargent for a neighboring PD. He takes his duty weapon all over the house with him, including the bathroom. My daughter has seen this. Luckily, I taught my daughter how to safely handle and respect guns, not fear them. Her only conclusion is that she has at least one friend who has a father crazier than hers ;-).

Youre extremely vulnerable when youre butt naked in the shower too especially if you wear glasses like me. Nothing like getting robbed with a blurred vision and shampoo in your hair. You gonna hop out of the shower with your dinga-ling dangling running to grab your gun? I dont think so it'll be too late. You won't even make it out of the shower if they break in. For me, all I gotta do is slide my shower door open a few inches stick my hand out and grab my gun which is 1ft away. It's hidden by candles too so he wont know what im reaching for.

For a while I agreed with keeping the light high and to the side with my weak hand but I now prefer simplicity and an overkill of lumens. 170lumens in your face from pitch darkness is not going to make someone feel very comfortable, and I'd be able to see them very, very well all while having a hand free if necessary.

large American flag, Arizona flag, and Rebel flag in the front yard, along side the primered 75 chevy, (the things that scream "oh crap im probably gonna get shot in this house"). Then locked doors, gates and windows and motion lights and cameras and inside is two labs with loud mouths. if some stubborn SOB decides its still a good idea to proceed, my XD40 with 180 grains, strobe, and laser await beside my bed and the 870 with buck backs that up... plus nobody wants to fight the naked guy....

I live in an "iffy" neighborhood. So when we bought our house we thought "We like the house, We'll eventually take he bars off the windows" Well almost all my neighbors without them have been broken into!

So if a BG chooses our house, I'll just figure out which window he tries to come in. Turn the table on its side Quigley style, and let the 870 bark! Or the G23C, or a Mosin to wake the entire block, 1 of 2 1911's, or S&W mod59, or...................

Or I'll get my mother in law on the phone and let her talk to him and he'll just shoot himself!!

I just hooked up my 870 Police with a CDM MOD-C light mount and attached my Surefire 6P. This sits in the corner for if S really Hit The F.

I also just bought a Beretta M9A1 and a Streamlight TLR-1 to keep as a nightstand gun.

During the day at home I always CCW one of my G26 or G19.

I'm a recent convert to buying weaponlights for my HD firearms. I had a scare the other night and realized how useful a weapon-mounted light would be.

Hollow points help, but not that much. Any round can over penetrate but if you are really worried(example: appartment with thin walls and nighbors on all sides) you might consider a 12ga loaded with birdshot(literaly the only time I would recomend birdshot). Overall your best bet is to use a shotgun or smaller handgun(9mm - .45acp range, no 44mag or S&W .500), consider your fireing lines ahead of time and pick a good defensable spot that has any stray rounds going into something that will not be easily penetrated. For example in my apartment from my defensive position any stray shots would go down the hallway, through a wall, into my fridge, and if they kept going hit a brick wall.

I've always heard that pistol rounds are so slow and heavy that they are much more likely to over-penetrate in a building.

I have no idea why and I don't know anything about the physics of that, however, I've heard it several times from reputable sources..

I also keep a Maverick88 loaded with 00 buck handy for just incase.

What do you guys use for home defense? Shotgun, handgun or rifle and what type of load? Pictures are also welcome of course.

i use a taser (http://www.weapons-universe.com/Personal_Defense/Tasers.shtml) because it is very effective and easy to use in any scenario.

Just found out that a 29 year old (worthless waste of skin) that moved back home with mommy and daddy was convicted of “Grand Theft” (second strike). I have NEVER kept a loaded firearm in the house, until now. First line of defense are 2 totally useless dogs. Could lick them to death though. In the bedroom HK USP 40S&W loaded, but nothing in the pipe. In the office (real office, not the lavatory) is a Draco. Hope just the sight of a Draco would send’m running, but talk about over penetration, I think the Draco would qualify.

I'm sure I'm going to get slack, but although I have an M&P .40, and an AR15, they are both locked up and if time is of the essence, I don't know if I could get to them in time and load them (I have kids, so NO WAY I'm keeping it locked up but LOADED).

If I can/could get to it, I would, that would be my preference. However, as in the old days before guns, I have been partial to swords and martial weapons. I have a "few years" of training with samurai swords, along with a variety of other weapons that would do the trick (with less blood) if time didn't allow me to get my M&P 40 cal. My username says it all. "Chiburi" is the "cleaning of the blade" once you're done doing your business....

Video is 7 tatami mats soaked and sitting on a stand. It's "supposedly" the equivalent of a human body once they are soaked. I plan on doing this to a turkey as well, just to see how it goes.... (yes, I could have done the cut without all the waiting around, I was just trying to time it to the music).

This. Except, mine is not OD Green, and I bought the 124gr. +p Remington Golden Sabers because I tested a few different defensive rounds, and they are the ones I liked the best.
In addition of that, I keep a Beretta M9 loaded with the same Golden Sabers for my wife (until I stop being lazy and clean my FNP-9 and load it with the same, because she likes that one a little better). Also, I keep a Mossberg 590 with Remington Hi-Speed Steel BB shot, Olin's Military Grade 00 Buck, and Winchester Super-X hollow point slugs waiting to be fed in to it (depending on what the situation calls for). In addition to that, I like to keep my stainless steel Dan Wesson .44 magnum ready at hand (when it's clean), loaded with Winchester White Box SJSP (still looking for the right "permanent" defensive load to keep in it, open to suggestions if you have any).
On top of all that, I keep all my mags loaded with defensive rounds (124gr +p Remington Golden Sabers for the 9mm's, Remington UMC 180gr JHP for the .40S&W [with a small stockpile of Winchester White Box 180gr JHP as backup], and 230gr Winchester Supreme Elite Bonded PDX-1 for my .45ACPs).

M855? You sure about that? IIRC, M855 has the steel penetrator, and it also fragments extremely unreliably. Now M193 or any of the 70+ gr rounds, that's a different story.

Your are correct sir. I have about 1,200 of these sitting in an ammo can at home (got a deal I couldn't pass up on at a gun show). It is also know as "green tip", and SS109 (even the REAL SS109 is the European-made equivalent of the M855, so it is somewhat inaccurate). It was designed to shoot through walls, doors, glass, thin sheet metal (ie. car doors, quarter panels, etc.), heavy/thick clothing/gear. Also IIRC, one of the uses of the steel "penetrator" was to KEEP IT FROM fragmenting, especially when it was shot THROUGH something in to its target, along with adding non-deforming, denser mass to the projectile so that it kept its inertia after penetrating through said objets, or just penetrate deaper in to the unobstructed target itself.

After 120 yards you'd be correct. The round will quickly yaw and fragment as home defense will be less than 20 yards.

Actually, I was wrong, I wrote the wrong one, it's m193 (55gr FMJ) that I have, the green tip stuff is for plinking.

Plus the steel core was designed to go thorugh things past 200 yards when 55gr lost it's velocity and penetration.

The first line of defense in my home is a sonic assault, provided by a choir consisting of four chihuahuas and a hyper terrier-thing singing soprano. Assuming the BG can maintain his wits and objective after facing the Sound Weapon (or is completely deaf), the second resort is a Mossberg 500.

The first to fire is a #6 "courtesy round", followed by 00 buck.

If the above don't do the trick, I guess it would be down to the black powder revolver. I probably couldn't hit him with it, but might be able to set him on fire if close enough.

You guys have me worried, I have never felt the need for a "bathroom gun". I may have to give the idea some thought the next time I'm in the "library".
