Looking for some advice.......I have an XD40 I want to sell to a buyer out of state. This gun is registered in CA, but the state in which it is sold there is no registry. Will a bill of sale be enough to divorce me from the gun, and is there anyway to get off the CA registry other then to effect the sale through an FFL?

Thanks all

The sale will have to go through an FFL regardless of your desire to be somehow "unlisted" from the gun. Federal law requires interstate transfers to be done via an FFL generally (some exemptions such as interstate bequest not withstanding.)

This means you will have to send the handgun to an FFL in the purchaser's state.

It will never really be off the "registry" as a serial number search will still show you as the last known owner in CA.

You can fill out the "no longer in possession of handgun" form and file it which will show that you are no longer the owner of the handgun. http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/BOF4546NLIP0209.pdf

File a NLIP (http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/BOF4546NLIP0209.pdf) form once it's sold

ETA: opps, too slow on the submit button
