Here's something interesting...

I've been going to the range pretty often the last 2 months, and I was curious so I made some totals on each trip's costs.

My last range trip was a silhouette match: $5 match fee + $ 10 ammo + $5 gas = $20 for 3 hrs of fun. = $7 PHF

Before that was a silhouette practice: $0 range fee, $10 ammo cost + $5 gas = $15 for 2hrs = $8 PHF

Before that was an IDPA match: $25(?) match fee + $30 ammo + $20 gas + $5 toll road = $80 for 6hr = $13 PHF

Before that was a PPC match: $20 match fee + $15 ammo = $35 for 2hrs = $18 PHF

Before that was PPC match + practice: $20 range fee + $20 match fee + $20 ammo = $60 for 3 hr = $20 PHF

Before that was PPC match again = $18 PHF

Before that was trap practice: $20 range fee + $20 ammo + $5 gas= $45 for 2 hrs = $23 PHF

PHF = per hour of fun; does not include the drives to/from ranges.

So how much is your range trips??

Well I do not shoot in any matches so I cannot compare that. For my range visits it is all about what I bring that day. Sometimes I only shoot .22lr. Other days I shoot .357 or 9mm. or shoot all three. Sometimes I will bring a rifle out or shoot trap. I usually spend anywhere from $25-$75 for 4-5 hours of shooting. SOOOO anywhere from $5-$6 PHF on a cheap day to $15-$20 PHF on a more expensive day.

Lets see ... 2 to 3 hours at the range
Gas - $3
Range Fee - $7 outdoor or $9/hr indoor
Ammo - depends on what I'm shooting...
500 S&W - 4 boxes of 25 $165 or
22LR CCI - 5 boxes of 100 $60 or
etc...

I list the matches I attended because they present a significant portion of my range trips since I restarted shooting 2 months ago. In a way, a match artificially decreases the PHF cost by increasing the trip time for the little bit of shooting you do.

Wow how much ammo are you guys taking to the range? We ( my friends and I) make a whole day event out of it. We rent private ranges at burro ($80 + $20 deposit) then each bring 500-1.5k rounds of ammo for each of our firearms. We usually only bring 3 firearms each. I'm heading up to burro on the 14th so far I've spent about $500 on ammo as have they. We all pitch in for drinks/food and shoot all day. we usually do this every 2-3 months. in between I go shoot pistol/bolt action rifle on my own. This hobby is expensive. But I would never trade it :)

$20.00 gas
$14.00 range fee
100 rounds of 7.62 x 54r aprox. $25.00
some .22 to stretch out my day $5.00
100 rounds 7.62 x 39 aprox $20.00

Wow, adds up fast and costs more than I thought.

For sanctioned matches, I'm looking at a base entry fee of $25. I don't think about the gas because going to the range is much cheaper than filling up the truck, the boat, and having to pay a horrible toll for both the truck and the boat (selective math - lol) That doesn't even include the launch fee or tournament fee when I'm fishing.

The ammo expenditure isn't bad unless it's a 2700 (a little over 300 rounds to cover those pesky alibi calls!) I predominantly shoot International so I don't have to haul all that Conventional stuff and am getting lazier as I get older! The "sissy" shooting with Free and Air is even less to carry since they're only 60 round matches with .22/.177.

Know where the real cost is? Bribing my teammates with donuts and making the 10 lbs tray of potato salad. For the next Calguns BBQ, I think I'll be brave and bring in the fried wontons :)

Two range trips this week at $51 (+ gasoline, pro-rated membership cost, and cost of cleaning supplies) each.

That's a $7 range fee (I am a member) plus $40 of ammo and an additional $4 in sales tax on the ammo.

Each trip was 100 rounds of American made, brass cased, 5.56 to break in a new AR barrel (I recently built 2 ARs), using the fire 1 round, clean, x 10 followed by fire 9 rounds, clean x 10 method.

Each trip ran 2-3 hours, so we can call it $17 per hour.

Last August, I spent about $1800 going to a match in Reno. That didn't include lodging or about 130 rounds of "match quality" 50BMG.

This last June, I shot a match in Coalinga and figured it cost me a total of about $800.

The cost for ammo isn't as much as the cost of gas to get to my matches.

That's about right with today's high prices. I've still got a little Wolf that I paid $100/1000 for.

I was not ragging on you. I was just explaining that I do not shoot matches so my calculations would be for a normal range visit. I guess I could of left it out.

Range I go to charges $25 a year membership = negligible per-trip cost.

Probably shoot up $20 worth of ammo (reloads, ~.20 per round) over three hours.

$6.67 phf.

Yearly membership for indoor range in my local

ammo is darn expensive. I'm on the indoor range twice / week for my pistol . Cost $50-$70/ week. :-(

Not counting for the rifle yet.

Last Saturday @ Sac Valley

Range fee $3 - me, $ 1.50 - son, $ 1.50 son's friend

22 lr $20 (two wolf match and the rest Elay junk) pistols & rifles at steel silhoutte on the plinker range

38 cal $20 (for 50 rnds of full power 38 and 150 rounds of target rounds out of a SW 19 6")

40 cal $5 (50 rnds of full power in the HK expert)

.223 $20 (200 or so rounds of Hornady out of my White Oak match rifle)

30 cal M1 Carbine $20 (250+ rnds out of my Underwood)

30 cal M1 Garand $10 (100 rnds of M2)

With gas and soda's it probably cost me around $120 or so - I did a little shooting.

The boys shot up most of the ammo with me there standing and watching like a SO.

The boys will never forget the trip and they got ping.

With my work schedule, I miss two days pay when I go to a match, I am out $800-900 before I leave the house. You guys thought I was crazy for driving down after work and staying up 36+ hours straight the first day of a match but that way I don't miss 3 days.

But for a "normal" range trip, I stop on the way to work, spend about 3-3.5 hrs at the range and go thru $10 if I just shoot 22LR to $100 if I shoot mostly the bigger stuff. I probably average about $40 a trip once a week.

I don't know how some people can spend $15-$20 per hour (1 hour) at a range and only shoot around 50-100 rounds. IMO, if I'm paying that much for the hour lane use, I'd rather shoot more and get the most out of it. That's not to say that I wouldn't use that time to work on skills, but for me 100 rounds will go pretty fast with my pre-ban mags all loaded up.

What I usually pay per range trip at the local indoor range.....

$1 in gas (my car gets 50mpg, and the range is about 5 miles from my house)
$0 range fees = unlimited lane use & no time limit (yearly membership, but I need to visit more than 16 times to 'break even')
$3 for 6 full size targets purchased at the range (cheaper than buying them online... I've checked everywhere)
$9 for each box of Federal 9mm FMJ (I usually use anywhere from 3-6 boxes per visit)

Total... approx $30 ~ $55 per range visit.

Gas, maybe 5 bucks.
Range Time, Free (usually...My Lodge bro is one of the RO's at Angeles...I pay if I don't go with him)
Ammo, whatever I rolled...I don't really keep track anymore. I'll guestimate 10 or 15 bucks.
Targets, Free pretty much. Whatever I print out.

Total = 10 bucks 15 tops.
