You Real Lawyers can ignore this, if you like ...

Over at Volokh, Orin Kerr posted a link to his paper "How to read a Legal Opinion" (http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1160925). It's aimed at law students, but it's light reading, and conveniently defines a lot of terms.

Since we're getting a bunch of interesting cases in recent years, becoming familiar with basic structure and terminology will help us all follow along.

And I'll re-plug my post Beginner's Guide to Reading California Bills and Bill Pages (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=161873). Those laws that get interpreted in court cases have to come from somewhere, and understanding a bit about the mechanics of the bills is also useful.

Thanks Librarian...I printed it out.

Question:

In OOIDA v. Lindley - AB-962 Unconstitutional, which counsel would take the defendants side? Those for the DOJ? Attorney General J. Brown? How is this decided?

Thanks Librarian. I have spent an hour reading the document and I have found it useful. I find it amusing that we have William the Conqueror (year 1066) to thank for all the french words in our legal system.
