Russian ammo found at Madera home
Posted at 10:05 AM on Thursday, Jul. 29, 2010
By Vanessa Rakis-Garabedian / The Fresno Bee
A 19-year-old gang member was arrested this morning after Madera County anti-gang officers found 350 pounds of Russian military ammunition at his Madera home.

Agents with the Madera County Gang Enforcement searched of the man’s home on the 1000 block of Dellavalle Avenue on Wednesday afternoon and uncovered 4,400 rounds of 7.62 x 39 mm Russian-made military ammunition sealed in 88 individual packages of 50 rounds each.

Agents also found 30 grams of marijuana, along with 40 grams of methamphetamine packaged for sale, drug packaging materials and scales. Agents said the man may have been smuggling drugs to Mexico.

The man was arrested about 10 a.m. this morning as he returned to his home, said Erica Stuart, Madera County sheriff's spokeswoman.

The suspect is on probation for a 2009 arrest on drug and weapons charges, the Sheriff's Department said.

Anyone with information about the case can call the Madera County Gang Enforcement’s hot line at (559) 662-5132, or the Madera County Sheriff’s Department at (559) 675-7770.

once its no longer considered evidence, think they will sell the ammo? I can still wish they would.

So... the ammo is the least valuable thing they found? Who knew people bothered to "smuggle" such small amounts internationally.

Madera County is not exactly San Francisco. More than likely it will end up in a police or sheriff auction after the trial is all over with and they no longer need it.

50-round boxes? I've never heard of it being packed in 50round boxes.

Do you know when/where those auctions are held? I could use some cheap ammo.

Also, the guy was smuggling drugs TO Mexico??? :)

4400 rounds fits in the small cubby of my convertible vette, with room enough for a full trunk...and often has. Are they high?

350lbs of Russian Military Ammo? I just shipped out half of that to various CGNers. Mine were in 20rd packets though.

Madera County is a long ways from Mexico. These small amounts would make him go broke. Unless he's walking.

Shows the utter lack of professionalism of the "reporter" and "editor" who put together that story. Also brings into question the intelligence/credibility level of the Gang Task Force's spokesperson.

I guess if a drug dealer has a skateboard collection in their house, the headline would read "200 pounds of skateboards found at Madera home".

Or, if they had just bought a few cases of bottled water - "350 pounds of bottled water found at Madera home".

If they are going after drugs, the headline (and lead) should be about drugs. If they are going after ammo, then they need to be stopped, given a remedial class about the law, and then fired.

hehe I got more of my .22 lr than that. Thats not even mentioning 12 guage, 5.56, 9mm, 7.62X39, X54R, etc etc...

Since when is ammo a controlled substance...

Here's the actual headline: "Teen arrested after military ammo found" which has me worried about the priorities of both the press, and law enforcement, in that area.

Whats your issue with law enforcement??. They did not write the news article.

Whats your issue with law enforcement??. They did not write the news article.

How did the media find out about the bust, and decide that the ammunition was a big deal?

The three most likely possibilities:

1) The LEA provided the news agency with a press release.

2) An LEA spokesperson made a statement/answered questions.

3) Some LEO made a big deal about the ammo in their report (which the press later got hold of).

So, chances are that if the cops weren't making a big deal about the fairly small quantities of perfectly legal ammunition, the press wouldn't have talked about the ammo in their story.

You folks realize that for this guy the ammo probably WAS illegally possessed. He was on probation for weapons and drug charges. There's a chance that terms of probation included no weapons/ammo/drugs to be in possession. IF that were true, possession of ONE round of ammunition would be illegal, for him.
