Not a technology person. I saw some websites that you have to buy the code from them. Where do they get that code from? My service is AT&T.

Try calling AT&T first and ask them for the unlock code. I'm on T-Mobile and if you call and ask for it they will be happy to give you the code.
If not try http://www.horizonwirelessonline.com, if you have to pay to get it unlocked.

Don't pay. Just call whoever the phone is branded trough, i.e. Verzon, AT&T, Tmobile. The FCC just ruled on this also: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ytech_wguy/20100727/tc_ytech_wguy/ytech_wguy_tc3236
I highly recommend writing down the unlock code once you get it. It is unique to your handset's EIN and can be reused if you have to do a hard reset in the future.

A hard reset is not going to lock the phone back. Once it's unlocked, it stay's unlocked. I've done ton's of hard resets on different blackberries and if they were unlocked before the hard reset they stayed that way afterward.
You need a MSL code generator, it'll generate your MSL (unlock code) from your IEMI.
ETA: Just noticed you said Verizon, Verizon doesn't use a Master Subsidy Lock code. All their handsets default to 000000 (unlocked by default).
