I had one about that size (both body and rack) wandering down my street at 2am Saturday. And I don't live in a rural area by any means.

I'm actually a little concerned that all the rain this past winter and spring will give us a pile of good forage, a population explosion, and then the naturally dry years will return and cause a bigger crash.

Very cool! Would you mind sharing where they are located so I can go photograph them? They will be safe with me. I promise as I just joined PETA! :whistling: :43:

Here's one I saw on Saturday, not a minute after getting creamed by a sedan :( Right near my zone too :(

Nice buck pics. http://www.jesseshunting.com/images/smiley_thumbs_up_yellow_ani.gif

That sucks about the road kill buck. I saw a nice one last year that got creamed over by Mt. Baldy Road by the San Antonio dam. Damn shame.

what's the SOP in a sitchyation like that?

1) let it rot
2) call cops/ranger and ask if you can take the meat
3) just dress the poor thing on the side of the road and bounce

This -

or 3 if you're feeling lucky and have clothes that fit it.

bada bing...

This part of the question is hilarious -

"...if I accidentally hit and kill a deer on one of the backroads, how is that handled? Do I wait until morning and shoot it?"

"Hang on Cletus, we gotta wait till the sun comes up so I can shoot this here dead deer and make it all legal-like."

Why didn't you take him home? I sure do when I see road kill unless it is a mountain lion.

That is where it slid on its side for a few feet.
