2010 Dove Hunting

Who is going to be out there opening weekend? I will for sure.

Who is going to be practicing before the opener? I always do.

What area do you plan on hunting? Antelope Valley.

Who would like to tag along with me? I guess I will.

How many did you bag last year? Around 50 total for 6 days of hunting.

I will not post the exact location of where I am hunting but I can say it is within 20 minutes from my house. If Saturday Sept 4 works better for people I can go that day also to do a meet with some local fellow calgunners.

I am down for the Opener and tagging along with you, How far is your spot, and does it produce good populations every year, or is it spotty like the Imperial Valley?

Hahaha, not looking for a guarantee, this isn't my first Dove rodeo, it's just from experience, some areas are more consistent than others.

Let me know the details of where you want to meet and when.

Looks like I'm going to be at Cibola for the opener.

We're gonna have our annual dove tune up shoot Sunday Aug 29th at Prado Olympic Shooting Park. Eric is going to roast a whole pig so come on down. $25 for 4 hours of unlimited target trap and skeet and all the grub you can eat. It's pot luck so bring something to chip in.

Me, my brother, and possibly my dad will be heading to some land up in the northern Sac Valley. We did pretty good last year. The property has water and tree cover for them to roost in. We had pretty good luck last year. I don't plan on much practice as I'm pretty well versed with a scattergun in general. I can usually pick up 21/25 at skeet if I go there, or do about 70% at sporting clays.

Canada Geese come down to California you know.

I have a question, what is the purpose of Dove hunting? Is there even enough to eat? I just don't know, I'm not against it.

PCH cooked some for me wrapped in bacon and smoked last year at his wild meat feast and it was delicious I also got to try deer and wild pig and some of his coyote jerky which I could not believe it was coyote. I did not get to hunt with him last year but since I just got my license a month a go I hope to tag along this year.

That might be the case but when we go to Canada you get 30 to 40 of them coming in every hour, not to mention the ducks that follow them in. Goose hunting in Canada is a whole different experience!!!

The best duck clubs in CA can not compete with what we do in Canada!!

No one has a SECRET spot! unless it is on private property? I thought I had these special spots shown to me by my Dad till I got older and learned that nothing is really secret you may not see people there but they are there when your not and most of the time they leave very little trace . Want proof? sit back a mile or three with a good spoter and watch your secret spot some day. Yep out of the wood work they come espescialy before and after season......HHHHMMMM imagine that?

I plan on going out on Opening Day. I used to go to Yuma but it is too far these days due to limited time. Recently West of Palmdale/Lancaster has been my hunting ground for dove. Most of the time I can eek out a limit on Opening Day but it is tough. Also, I have headed up toward Bakersfield for the second opener. Would love to get out with a few others since I usually end up hunting alone.

I hunt just north of woodland (North cal), flights look very very promising. Last year was my best season ive ever had (meaning we were shooting in self defense to keep from getting swarmed) this season looks like it will be even better!

I fillet the breast meat wrap with bacon your favorite pepper (bell, japs, habs etc) cheese if you like and grill them hot till the bacon is cooked. The only problem with this method is that they disappear quickly.

I have also diced them and added to your favoirte spaghetti sauce. They also make a great stir fry. Have at it.

Hey guys, i just got my first pump shotgun and this will be my first season for dove and duck later. I live in merced county. Anybody know of a decent public place around here for dove? Thanks guys.

Check out china island unit off of 140.I have heard that they shoot a lot of doves on opening.
Even los banos wild life refuge allows dove hunting it is a huge grass land area .I live 10 minutes from each place and each year I can hear them blasting away.

Also DFG did not have me fill out the license completely all they put was my name on my license.... the guy at Big 5 was surprised he said DFG is really strict on them when it comes 2 filling out the license completely before u leave the store

It just depends on the location if DFG has got after them yet, the one in madera all they do is put your name and date it, then you can fill the rest of the info out. If they get slapped on the wrist for it they'll have to change their SOP too. Good luck and stay safe

Depends on the length of barrel but I usually use my Modified choke with a 28" barrel on my Browning A5. I switch to high brass and full choke later in the day when they start to fly higher.

i use modified choke.. its a medium spread so it doesnt ruin the meat as a full choke would.. but also depends on how far you want your affective range.. u lose about 15 yards with a modified compared to a full

I shoot a full choke. To each their own. I just have to remember not to lead them as much at close range. Makes those long shots possible. I also carry a 20g modified as a back up but I enjoy the full choke.

The choke used depends on two things, the distance you want to take the birds, or the amount of leed you want to use. If you want to take the 40+ yard shots or you want to leed them off by very little you'll need a full choke, if you want to shoot within 25-30 yards or leed by a good distance (depending on the birds speed) the mod. choke will work great. For me when I bring out new hunters I always try to get them to understand and use a mod choke first. They won't be as tempted to sky bust wich does nothing but piss off everyone around them.

My friend likes to shoot his 20g on opening day, the funny thing is he gets his limit usually before everyone shooting their 12g. One of these days I'd like to get out the 410 and try but I don't think the results would be very good for me. :o

Well...Looks like I am now going to miss the opener. I put my dog in the truck today to ride around with me while scouting. Made a stop at the local Kragen's to top off my oil and power steering fluid. Took care of that real quick, got in the truck, started it.....throttle doesn't work. WTF?!? It was idling, but my pedal felt like I wasn't even pushing anything. So I pop the hood and check out the linkage. No broken or disconnected cables. Bottom line...had to tow it to the shop. Shop has to order a replacement part for the linkage, from the dealer (no aftermarket part available). Okay fine. But it's gonna take like 2 days to get the part because the dealer even has to order it! So I guess I'll just be home tomorrow reading all of your success stories and drinking my sorrows away. :censored:

Well I didn't notice the part he was talking about when I was hanging out in the Kragen's parking lot, so I was worried that it might be one of the million control modules or something. That's why I had it towed. Then I just dropped the truck off and got a ride home (I still had my dog with me). The mechanic didn't call me to tell me what was wrong until I was already home. Otherwise if I would have been there for him to actually show me what was wrong, I probably could have just asked him for some duct tape, a paper clip, and some green play-doh, and McGyver'ed it myself. :driving:

Too many. Never been Dove hunting so I really didn't know what to expect and hadn't touched my shotgun in well over a month. Choke didn't help either but I got there. Step-dad has an adjustable choke so we switched for a bit and I took the farther ones and he had the close ones.

Had a great shoot this morning...probably the most doves in 10 years...
Bako off HWY 65...
took out a new Rem. 887 that was a table gift at the FNRA dinner last spring...had never shot it... started hitting right away... by 0715 had hit my 10 doves... weird... I thought the gun a particle of excrement when I got it...now it's a keeper... could almost close my eyes and shoot blindly... dang.. why didn't this happen before I got old...

the 16 yr old kid finally started hitting and did OK... he shot 3 boxes or so and hit 3 goods ones...

Went out this evening to the west side of Lancaster. I got there around 4:45 and left around 7:30. A very slow evening for dove. I only saw two and one of those was not really in range, but I went ahead and sent some lead its way. Bringing one home is almost more depressing than not bringing any home after not even shooting! Conditions were seemingly perfect; standing water from irrigation sprinklers, dove weed bordering one field, good cover keeping me out of sight, dove decoys placed around the water including two movement decoys, and alfalfa fields on two sides. I think the thunder and rain last week hurt the number of birds locally. Any suggestions or ideas? I know, go where there are more birds!

I must have shot atleast 60 birds in the morning, and another 40 in the afternoon! Everyone with me had limits, and everyone on the ranch also had limits. LOL!!!

Good to meet Marcello, Ernesto, Henry, and Von. Excellent shooters, we are!

Marcello tried to call a coyote outside the treeline where we shot our doves. We heard atleast 4 coyotes howlin and barkin and yappin. We started to walk out to make a quick stand before sun up but they must have heard us walking. Before you know it, we had coyotes in the dark in front of us barking and busting us. We just turned back, loaded the shotguns, and spread ourselves out in the field next to the farm/trees. It was non-stop action! Raining doves!

Really? Lead is more dense and heavier than the steel shot. I dont get how it would keep tighter and hit harder.

Intead of your #6 shot, switch back to #7 1/2 lead shot. I was smacking the dove and shot a hell of alot better than I thought I was capable of.

I got my limits within the first hour, and then started helping others fill there bag. Plus, it was all the eurasians you wanted over on the otherside of the farm we were at.

Marcello also killed a nice size buzz worm. About 4 feet. Skinned it and gave the meat and skin to Freddy (ranch caretaker).

Because lead is softer it collapses and flattens when it hits. It is like hitting someone with a water noodle compared to a stainless baseball bat. Also steel is better for the environment. :)

So you think a full metal jacket round hits harder than a lead soft point? I dont think so...

Like you say, lead has give, it will flatten therefore spreading the contact point on a wider area transfering more of the energy. Steel wont.

Either way, theyre only dove. How much knock down power do you need??? Leads been tried and trued for many many years. Im sure alot of waterfowl hunters would LOVE to switch back to lead if they could.

Full metal jacket is still lead core. It is great for penetration but not for energy spreading since it does not expand. When you are trying to break a wing of a dove you dont need something soft you want to break the wing. I use lead also since it is cheaper so I am not saying to only use the steel just that it is a little better choice.

Steel shot for dove? Dove? Really?

You must hunt some tough *** dove.

I would much rather bite down on a lead BB than a steel one. I like my teeth.

And the steel being better for the environment comment? Do you have any data that proves any adverse impact due to lead shot? Wasn’t the whole condor and lead bullet thing proven inconclusive and basically dispelled as well?

Just askin??????????

Be a man and bite steel. It just drops them better is all. I am not saying it is the preferred method for hunters but I have noticed that it works better. Try it and I guarantee you wont go back to lead. It wont leave those annoying fragments of metal either when you go to bite. The BB's come out whole and you wont miss any fragments.

Just stop being hard headed and try it. I am not saying it is better for everyone just that it works for doves like a charm since most of the time you get wing shots. Please remember that steel shot is not for all barrels either.

In my experience the steel flies way to slow and as far as breaking a wing on a dove it doesn't take much. I've shot steel before on ranches that wouldn't allow lead on them you have to adjust alot by leading off way more, going to a 6 shot will make them fly a little faster but you are sacrificing the shot pattern. For doves within 30-40 yards the best set up I've found is a mod choke with 7 1/2 lead shot. I used to use 6 shot but found I was missing more birds, and when I did hit them they were just about ruined by the larger shot. Everyone has their own preferences, but I have tried alot of different methods and this one seems to work the best for me, and my hunting partner

I'll be heading north of Bakersfield,Porterville area, this weekend to the in-laws. Hopefully I see some birds. Also looking for some hunting partners and places to hunt in The Ventura, Santa Barbara are area. Is there any public areas to hunt dove close by? I'm in Camarillo, and don't want to drive 4 hours to shoot dove.

Just got back from Maricopa area after two hunts and two limits. Limited out last night in 25 minutes. I had 4 dove in my bag within 3 minutes and 10 steps away from the car. Limited out this morning in 45 minutes. So much fun when you have a good place to hunt with a ton of birds! Hoping to go back out again soon.

Funny that none of the comments about shot size or composition address the real issue which is the actual amount of shot in the pattern. In 20 ga. I shoot 1oz. loads (S&B), not the 7/8 oz. loads you find in field loads. In 12 ga., I used 1 1/4 oz. Remington STS Premier Target loads. All in size 7 1/2. Most dove/quail/field loads have inadequate amounts of shot to fill patterns effectively, at least in the shotguns I have owned and patterned on paper. I have never shot steel, but I assume the same would be true. The name of the game is to maximize the number of shot that hits the bird, regardless of gauge or shot size.

Just got back from Blythe. Got access to some private property. Farm was FULL of doves. We pretty much had the place to ourselves.

That's one hell of a spot .All i ever see is a few here and there.

hunted san jacinto, bad day. spot we picked out for daybreak was dry with no birds flying, next two spots were loaded with mosquitos, and we were late to arrive at the next two spots only to see guys leaving with their limit. oh well, none of us had hunted the area before so now we know, might try to get back out over the weekend. heads up for anyone headed out there, had an encounter with a couple of DFG officers. they were very friendly but I suspect that was only because we approached them in the same way and were all following regs.

a buddy of mine got very lucky, as he was pulling his birds out to show the warden one dove started twitching in his hand, and you saw his head fall and shoulders slump knowing he messed up. the warden sees it and simply says "take care of that for me so I don't have to write you for a violation"

Im not gonna fake the funk. I had my cell phone with me, but just didnt take any pics. For what? We all know what dove look like. Now had I said that I robinhooded a dove and fused all the pellets together and watch it crash thru the atmosphere and create a shooting star before crashing back to earth hitting a snaggle toothed irish speckled 3 legged unicorn with herpes, THEN I sure as hell would have snapped a shot... IF I wasnt in a hurry to get to work, IF I had a real job.

I have been shooting steel 7's on dove for the last 3 years. It patterns better in my gun and the steel I'm shooting is 300fps faster than the lead. I get very few cripples on the doves and on clay targets it's just as effective.

Just got back from a Thursday evening dove hunt. Things went much better than yesterday west of Lancaster. I brought 7 home and had 3 more that went down in the almond trees that I couldn't find. I think they hung up in the branches or something. Anyway, supposed to count them as part of the bag limit. Where was I hunting? Beats the heck out of me! I was north of the Grapevine and on the east side. That's about all I know. I was just free-lancing. Talked to two guys who had been there the evening before and they said it had been much better then. 7 birds tonight versus 1 last night plus getting to shoot almost a whole box sounds like a pretty good evening shoot to me!

If you have not patterned you shotguns you should do so. It's the only way to determine POI for your gun and how the shot patterns with the various shells and chokes.

I was at the opener in the Los Padres Nat'l Forest near King City.
Too many hunters, not enough birds there.
I was 100 yards away from a couple of other parties that limited out by 10 AM.
Only an occasional pair flew near my totally camoed out self.
There were still quite a few hunters with shotguns loaded, sitting under the shade of the oaks by the time we left at noon.
Three of us got a total of only 11 birds.
Not the epic morning shoot to share with the grandkids, unlike other hunts there that are memorable.
Nevertheless, very tasty fare.
I didn't see any Euro Collared doves; but,(lol) when I got home last evening and was barbecuing some burgers, I heard a squawk up above in the trees. Dam* EC doves are hanging out in my yard up here in Santa Cruz!

Most of the times when i"ve hunted doves the evening shoot is better than the morning shoot, we usually set up around 5 and the shooting starts by 6 till sundown
Remember doves want water and usually drink or try to find water in the late afternoon before they roost
Good luck and happy hunting

My friend and I wanted to hunt some dove and we decided that the easiest way to get started was to go with the maps they seem to have in all the gun stores. Went to the dove "seminar" at turners, got ourselves a rotating wing decoy heck, we even went out and "scouted" the areas where we planned to hunt. This was my first time dove hunting and here are my thoughts.

Opening day 5:47 am, Niland. There is no way to adequately describe the insanity. Hunters packed tight as can be, it's frickin dark and people are firing around, over and AT you. Pellets rained down on us constantly, okay I can live with that but the shot slamming into the ground fifteen feet from me was a little too close not to mention the guys who almost fired on us a couple times from 30-40 yds while following a bird. Yelling at them provoked a "hey sorry dude" response. My friend and I looked at each other and said lets GTFO. We moved to the far deserted dirt corner of the area and picked off five between us, it was a miserable experience. We decided that dove hunters are an unsafe bunch of absolute arseholes on opening morning.

Opening day 2:30 pm, Niland. Back where we started this morning but no one is here. We had an area approx 300 by 1000 yds to ourselves and had an absolute blast. Blending in with the brush, Bob Wills playing on my Itouch, blasting away at the survivors from the mornings insane carnage with my 20ga o/u, now THIS was dove hunting. Calling out birds for my bud while he did the same, shooting, laughing, having the experience that I had dreamed hunting would be. I was letting a lot of birds go by because I didn't want to get my limit and have the dream end. Limit we did around 4:30 and that was that. I can now see why people get passionate about the sport.

Sep 2nd 5:47 am, Niland. Same time, same place as "the insanity" just a different day. No one around and we had another blissful experience. Limited out around 10:00 although we didn't start shooting till around 6:15 again trying to prolong the fun. Worked on the high fliers, some super speedy zig zaggers and finally walked the fields flushing them up. More Bob Wills through the Itouch, which sounds like an old tinny am radio, and I found myself imagining it was 60-70 years ago........ Will we go again? Yes. Will we go on opening morning? NO.
Hey maybe we're just crybabies but then again maybe getting shot ain't on my bucket list.

Its true...people are crazy on opening day (Morning). They think that is their one and only chance to get birds and the season will end at noon. Try to find another spot that others don't really know about. If you go off of those maps and what people at seminars tell you, well thats public knowledge and you can bet your @$$ idiots that aren't true hunters will be there blasting their guns in every direction.

Wickenburg AZ - 3 days, 3 limits. On the north side of highway 60 between Aguila and Wickenburg are 5-7 access gates that lead to ponds. You'll need something with 4 wheel drive or at least a tall SUV or truck. Best shooting there was in the morning, and fairly late. Maybe 8-10am is the sweet spot.
