View Full Version : Guy on craigslist wants to shoot his car with a .50 cal
http://www.craigslist.org/eby/car/152310488.html
Incase they pull the ad here's what it says:
"This may sound a little odd but I have a 1973 Datsun 510. It has the stock engine and a Cartech turbocharger system which is where the problem started. I have had nothing but problems getting this thing to run. It doesnt run worth a crap, has caught the carb on fire 2 times. I had it running decent for about a month but even then it does some kind of weird power surge in 4th gear. I bought a new 510 in the 70's when the came out and loved the thing. Picked up this car about 3yrs ago because I thought it would be fun to tinker with.
So heres the deal I am totally sick of this thing, tried to sell it a couple times locally with no interest. I live on a large ranch outside of Livermore. I also own a .50 rifle. On Sunday April 30 we will be holding a 510 turkey shoot. The datsun will be placed in a gully and 400yards away will be the 50. I will charge $10 a shot (basically what the ammo costs me)to anyone who would like to have a chance to shot a 50cal.
At the end of the day I will take two D9 cats and make a car pancake out of the thing.
I will be posting the event on google video. Stand by for the footage.
Please let me know if your interested and I will give you my address. I am not making money off of this just covering the cost of my ammo.
Thanks
Terry"

That's pretty neat. With the McBros rifle at least you won't miss.
Steep ammo cost, and I like that bench.

He might take a buck or 2 off of his price. But do you really think he is going to let people run ammunition through his match 50 cal for free?

About 15 years ago I got the chance to shoot a Browning .50 Cal machine gun (Ma Deuce) at an old Toyota and Oldsmobile at about 300 yards. Now that was fun! We were shooting ammo that someone said had a Chilean military headstamp from 1955. The guy that arranged the shoot said it was about 2 bucks a round.

shame about that 510, I heard those are fun cars to screw around with at Sears Point or Laguna Seca

$10 a shot is kind of high. Sure they drink 200 gr of powder give or take 30 gr, but surplus 50 cal powder is like $4 a pound. Ok, primers are like $.25 each, a single 50 cal brass is no more than a buck, and a 647 gr projectile is $.29 each. Somehow that does not add up to $10 a round. This guy IS making money at that price. So components add up to $.13 for powder + $.25 for the primer, + $1 for the brass and + $.29 for the bullet and it adds up to $1.67 a round. I checked the price at a supplier on the net. Sorry, but reloaded 50 cal doesn't cost $10 a round. API doesn't even cost that much ($.39 each for the projectile).
Um, that's ok..I've fired a 50 once.. It felt like my front teeth wanted to come out. And that guy let me fire his gun for free. :D

If this guy really wanted to make money, he would simply charge people $10 to shoot anything they want at his car. Hell, I would come out and bring several buddies along! Perfect chance to test-fire Kalified ARs and Aks.

I'd love to head up there and shoot the thing with my own 50.
I'd charge only 5 bucks a round, my own loads run roughly 1.25-1.50 for the first loading and drop to around 85 cents a shot on the 2nd loading thanks to brass costs being absorbed in the 1st shooting. My loads are 700grn AP with 215 grains of IMR 5010.
I've already damaged one vehicle though with my 50BMG. It was in a position almost exactly like in this picture that the muzzle blast from my 50BMG severely cracked my windshield and nearly blew it out. Muzzle is nearly 5 feet from the windshield in the pic when it's on angle.

What a ripoff...I see 50 bmg ammo at the cow palace show all the time for 150 rounds for $180. Makes the round worth $1.10 somthing....
But it's his car and he can charge whatever he wants. Personally I've had a chance to shoot a car with my 50 bmg. I'm very aware of what it can do.

it might be a rip off, but it would be fun. i do think that he should allow us to shoot whatever we want afterwards. :D

$10 a shot, that's a little much. I've never bought ammunition for a .50 BMG but I've rented full auto guns for $10 including ammo at an out of state range before.

That's a pretty freaking awesome idea.
I'm sure several non-gun nuts will show up to watch this gun be fired, most of the gun nuts I know have already fired a .50 BMG.
I didn't know there was anyone in Livermore that's cool like that (lived there for 6 years).

The $10 cost is high but you have to remember he is letting you shoot his car. So rather then selling it you get to shoot it. He wants to make some kind of money for it.
Back in high school, when I was in auto shop, people would give us used old cars for free to work on and learn. We would do everything we could with the car then when done we would hold a fund raiser. $5 gets you 60 seconds with a baseball bat and the car. Boy, the line for this was always around the corner. we would get hundreds of dollars for a car that was stripped and worthless. We had to pay a small amount to have the car removed and taken to the junk yard but it was well worth it.
Sometimes the distruction of a car is worth more then that car itself.

This must be a joke, if that really is a 73 510, they are getting harder to find in the states everyday and have a large following. They used to be the only indep RR drive car you could get in the 70's other than a Corvette at several times the cost.

Except for the BMW 1600-2002s that put an end to the 510 at the track:p
Hahaha, this guy is something - what a novel idea!!

What a waste of a Datsun five-and-dime.
They can make great little corner burning racecars, and there are plenty of people willing to buy them for more than he'll make shooting at it.
BTW, I reload .50bmg for about a buck a round using pulldon 5010 powder and resized AP bullets, exactly what I would want for punching sheetmetal and engine blocks.
