I saw the forcast for Saturday
It was a 50/50 chance of some rain

We'll have to hang out and see what happens in the next few days
We could use a few drops here and there to keep the dust down

If you don't want to drive all the way back into the canyons, I am meeting my group at the Fire Station (we will probably park all of our cars there or across the street) and transporting them to the clean up site in the back of my M35A2 deuce and half.

Mainly it's to save parking spots for others, but if you have a nice shiny car and are worried about taking it back there or if you just want to ride in the back of an old military war house, look for us. We are meeting at 0745. Tan 6 x 6.

Know the rules before you shoot in Bee Canyon!

There was apparently enforcement activity in the Canyon this morning and citations were issued. Pay attention to the type of ammo you can use (i.e. no steel core) and what constitutes a target.

Here's the meat -

AMMUNITION, FIREARMS & TARGETS

Target Shooting rules apply to firearms, air rifles and gas guns. This includes devices used in recreational paintball activities.

Shooters shall not use paintballs or other forms of ammunition that would result in visible residue except where authorized in ranges that operate under special use permit (see above).

Steel core, armor piercing or Teflon ammunition is not permitted. You may only shoot at a target which is dirt, paper, wood, clay pigeon, or a metal spinning/knockdown target. Pick up and dispose of your targets when you are done.

Shooters are prohibited from destroying any natural feature. Also prohibited is discharging a firearm or any other implement capable of taking human life, causing injury, or damaging property as follows: in or within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site or occupied area; or across or on a road or a body of water; or in any manner or place whereby any person or property is exposed to injury or damage as a result in such discharge.

I have two people who I can't contact scheduled to attend the clean up (snow camping or something) so we have decided to go even if the official clean up is canceled. My group is meeting at the fire station at 0745 and then transferring to my deuce and half for the ride back into the canyons.

We will pick one and clean it.

Our reasons are actually kind of selfish - a few of the boys will get community service hours for high school and all of the boys get community service hours for their Boy Scout advancement. We haven't done any community service in about a month so we "need" this.

Interesting Sidenote::::

I went out late in the day to see how things were after a busy day out there

Went to the very canyon that was just Cleaned-Up
There was a younger couple there shooting a .22
I told him about the clean-up that had just happened early in the day
His very words were..
" Ya . I forgot to bring some targets and was hoping there would be some junk or bottles around I could shoot up "

I said nothing and walked away .................................................

VintageDUG
02-03-2013, 10:00 AM
The ranger stopped by to talk to the boys and seemed very happy. She praised their work and offered to get them community service hours whenever we need it.

She also had great things to say about Metalstorm 999 aka Greg from Counter Strike Firearms for unloading the truck all by himself. We overfilled his truck, but he couldn't stay to shoot, so he selfishly took the load out himself and unloaded it alone so the boys could stay and shoot for a short while (we had to be out by noon, a couple leaders had a tax appointment).

There was a minor scare when I couldn't find the key for my gun case, but luckily my son knew where the spare key was.

The boys really like doing it since the payoff is so high - they get community service for high school (if they have their form and if they are in high school), they get community service hours for scouts (you usually need 6 hours per rank to advance) and then they get to shoot.

We brought out a S&W M&P 15-22, a Henry AR7, a Saiga, a Remington shotgun, a S&W M&P .22, a Ruger SR22, a Hi-Point .380, a S&W M&P 45 and a Rock Island 1911A1.

Thank you to Eat Dirt for the donated .380 ammo.

The normal ammo supply is 600-700 rounds of 22, and 50-60 round of every other caliber. At least until ammo is easier to get.

I'll get the pics from the other leader and post them up.

My friend and I just went shooting there today (never been there before) and as we were unloading officer Murillo pulled up and inspected our weapons (all legal) and told me I couldn't shoot my hanging bowling pin rig due to the plastic casing on the bowling pins. That made me sad, but then she mentioned that a lot of people were just there cleaning yesterday and that the Calguns members were a big reason for the area still being open.

Of course my friend and I took out two trash bags full of trash, and I will try to make some of these clean ups.

Edit: corrected to mention that the officer said the calguns members cleaned and kept it open, not me.

I have to replace the "8" sticker that came off when we washed the windows during the pre op check. That sometimes gets me better parking if a base has E7 and above spots.

Sadly it might be the old girls last run for a little while. The rear main has been leaking and I notice the clutch slipping some on the drive home. It usually only does that with a heavy load on a hot day. We need to drop the trans and bell housing, then replace the clutch and rear main seal.

And currently configured in the "Oil Spreader" configuration. Collecting parts to change the rear oil main seal soon and freshen up the clutch.

She JUST a straight 6, but one cylinder is bigger than the entire engine in my commuter/beater car.

They say the clutch/seal swap isn't a complicated job, everything is just super heavy. No need for jacks, stands or anything like that. Just a 4 x 4, an open window and a come-along.

Hopefully she won't miss too many clean ups.

Planning on heading out tomorrow to cleanup a canyon and do some plinking with the family. Does anyone know if it'll be open? I waited to long to call the Ranger station and I'd hate to make the 45-minute trip to see the gate closed.

The gates never close because its an open OHV trail and forest road. What does happen is an electronic sign board will be on 74 before the entrance saying no shooting.

Made it there about 7:45, found canyon 5 open only to realize I made a rookie mistake and forgot my ammo can at home. We went back home and returned to the canyon at 9:30, luckily canyon 1 just opened up. My family filled a 33-gallon trash bag with plastic/paper/cardboard trash and removed a completely shot up 35" CRT TV before shooting. We got in about an hour of shooting before we had to leave, dropping off the trash at the ranger station on the way back home.

Two other shooters pulled up to the canyon as we were packing up and I noticed they had several two-liter bottles filled with water. I told them the target rules (paper, clay, wood, and steel spinners/gongs) and warned them that they would get cited if the ranger drove by and saw them shooting at anything else. I also reminded them to clean up their mess so that we don't loose this shooting area.

Canyon 1 still needs more work, lots of small bits of wood and many shotgun shells remain. We went after the large, obvious stuff today. Thanks to everyone for chiming in with info on the canyon. It was good to get out and shoot again with the family, as it's been several months since we've been able to.

Hello "Eat Dirt"!
I was picking up some of my 9mm shell casings out there in Bee Canyon today on my Suzuki DR-Z400 when you pulled up and asked if I was going to reload them. I gave you a handful of them I had picked up because I don't like leaving my trash laying around..

Remember me? haha

You didn't happen to find a single stack 9mm Ruger LC9 clip out there did you? I lost it somewhere between Bee Canyon when I Saw you last and home! I'm pulling my hair out looking for it. If you see it up there let me know! Thank you and good work keeping the place clean. Funny when you met me there that's exactly what I was doing. =)

Hi, new member here. First post.

Wanted to start off by getting involved with the clean up efforts you guys are doing. Right on!

I would like to pitch in when I can although I've got a hitch or two in my giddyup these days.

I would like to offer the use of my transmission jack or any other truck repair tools he might need to VintageDug for his clutch and main seal project. It is a heavy truck trans jack and can make life a bit easier. Sorry, no clutch caddy. Which makes life really easy when doing this job.

You can PM me if you want or I'll be monitoring the sight so just give a holler.
Cheers.

Thanks for the offer, but we finished it up last weekend. You can't really use a trans jack to remove them. The easiest way is to open the front window and lay a Hi Lift jack or a 4 x 4 from the back of the cab and out the front passenger window. And then use a chain fall down through the removed floor plates. Then it gets lowered down on to a furniture dolly. It's not a bad job, just everything is HEAVY. The flywheel is nearly 100 pounds.

Not only did we install a new clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, pilot bushing, rear main, trans gasket set and shift boot, but I just picked up two new tires for the steer axle. She's ready to work!

I bought one of them fancy magnet sweeper things for cleaning up too.

Well a disappointing experience. Got there at 745. All the canyons up to 4 or 5 were full. There is a huge mud sink hole after that so if you don't have a 7-ton you are pretty much SOL. Plus no one would let me squeeze in. I even offered up 5.56 to boot. Pretty discouraged.

Just take a trash bag or 2 with you and a rake if range 2 is free you will like it there and you cant miss it cause the BBQ is still out there unless another calguns member took it away today. but its a good spot. 6 or 7 is good too

this should be a standing rule for the Canyon if you going to shoot bring Trash bags a rake and leave with at least 1 full bag from what ever range you at

Roushee97 was telling about tvs and all sorts of stuff out there that should be out there let alone shot at.

We were talking about rules today when we got back about stuff you can and cant have cause i had a lot of ideas of stuff to shoot at that is not allowed.

im going to talk to some of my Navy and Marine buddies about going up there next time theres a clean up scheduled so we can get some more bodies involved

They did say it was cool that its free to shoot . I told them if we dont keep it clean we will lose it. I did notice the BBQ and door at the dumpster great job guys . Yeah It would really suck if we lost this. My kids are still excited my 20 yr old sister just scored a 10/22 at bass pro. But I believe the best way to combat a problem is by educating new and old shooters. Still hoping to go out and meeting other calgunners in my area. On a clean up date.

Was out there today about 10am! Fired my first AR-15!
Just finished building it. I bought the receivers after I met Eat Dirt up there on the motorcycle a few weeks back and found out about this forum. Which led to me posting a WTB add for a receiver to finish the AR!
Saw the big rut from whoever was stuck last week!

Here's me babbling on camera, loading up and firing the AR for first time.

Not too many people today, nice and quiet!
Used my gopro Hero3 for video mounted to my head.

I can't believe these idiots leaving their crap! All that hard work to keep the place open, and these morons just trash the place. Anyways, we pulled out a solid core/ steel door, a computer, a microwave, the metal wall insert to house the microwave, empty diaper boxes, and a ton of empty water bottles. Anyways, canyon one is good again :D

Unfortunately, the computer looked like it ate a case of 00 buck. I highly doubt it was salvageable. It might still be in the ranger dumpster though.

As far as I know the shooting has been short days
meaning stop shooting by 1 :00 PM

Because of high temps and low humidity

HI guys. I'm new to the forum and was wondering when Bee Canyon usually closes due to fire danger. By the way, I have to say something about what a fantastic job you guys did on those two canyons. I have only recently started shooting there, and I have never seen them so spotless. Count me in on the next cleanup. I'm free most weekends, and I could grab an extra set of hands no problem.

Thanks for the notice. Went out last Saturday with the family, knowing that the season was coming to an end. We arrived early and had canyon 1. It sounded like another party was at 2 or 3. Canyon 1 was pretty trashed, we raked up several piles of shotgun shells and trash and were able to haul out three trash bags full and an aluminum transmission case. We left the lower portion pretty clean, but did't have enough room or trash bags to take care of the upper part.

A few years back ...I was coming out from shooting with a few friends in the last canyon and as we got to the canyon you were in . A guy was setting up some T V Picture tubes to shoot

Unless you are in a lowered sports car, you won't need a truck. Worst case the initial road is always well maintained, and you could hitch a ride or jog in the other 200 yards or so. I went all the way up to shotgun flats in my civic last week.

I'm amazed they even opened it given the way everyone is freaking out about the lack of rain/critical fuel moistures. Rightfully so for once.

I'm glad they're letting you guys shoot though. Hopefully I can get out there again one of these days. I used to shoot in there 20 times a season. Haven't been in there for 3 years. Busy with the kids, and at times can't even spare any cash for ammo to play.

Having a fire extinguisher and/or shovel would probably be a good idea for anybody to have on hand should they feel so led. This season in particular, the conditions are going to continue to be ripe for a fire all the way through what is normally safe shooting season. I'd hate to see another "shooter sparked" wildland fire, especially a gigantic one that is very possible. For all we know it could be the death-nail on shooting in Bee Canyon.

We are meeting at the ranger station at 0745 to park our cars and will car pool back in my deuce and half. If anyone else wants to park their shiny car off site and ride back with us you are welcome.

Also, will there be anyone who has a good working knowledge of the China SKS there? I have one from the black Friday sales that I cleaned up but has a small problem - when you pull the trigger, nothing happens. Thanks Eatdirt I enjoyed working with other Calgun folks cleaning up the range. I also enjoyed shooting both of your vintage firearms the 38 pistol and the mosin nigat. Thanks again to all the folks that made it out to the clean up. your friend Fyrstomper

I missed the clean up this Saturday. Still kinda feeling my way around the forums and I missed this one. I live in Hemet. Can I get some directions to Bee Canyon, please? I'd like to check the place out. Thanks

Eat Dirt advised me that he and his wife went thru the area in his Rhino. There were a group of people in the first canyon we cleaned (IIRC, it was this one, not #2). When they returned, they found shotgun hulls, empty shotgun shell boxes and about 20 empty beer bottles. Some people, huh.

Sorry guys I am new to the forums. I wish I could have helped clean up , this place looks like a fun place to shoot.
Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to get here ? Ill make sure I bring my work gloves and a box of hefty bags.
And please Put me down at the top of the list for the next clean up.

Went out today with 8 members of my family. Had a great time. Sadly there was lots of trash in the canyons. We pulled out a tv and a bunch of trash. All in all a good time.

This is why it's so important to keep our public ranges clean. Great job by Cal Guns in educating shooters on this and arranging clean up days.
