View Full Version : Eye protection for those who wear eye glasses

Yeah, I think that pretty much describes it. So what would my options be? I'd personally prefer prefer not to wear both my glasses and eye protection simultaneously, I pay mind to aesthetics too. For all of you shooters with glasses or just happen to know a solution to my problem, your input is appreciated.

My lenses are polycarbonate and are big enough to protect my eyes from "frontal mishaps".

If you've got the pretty-boy-singer-from-HK frames made by RL or Hillfiger, those won't cut it, lenses are too small.

I always just wear my glasses when I'm not wearing contacts (and thus wear standard shooting goggles), but then again like the previous poster I have big polycarb's for glasses.

If you have too-small lenses, then head over to Wally World with your prescription (or have them read it off the lens) and have a pair of large cheapo lenses made specifically for eye protection. You'll just be four-eyes that way, not six-eyes. :)

If you're real paranoid, get a set of clear motocross or ski goggles- that'll even keep falling shells out of your eyes. I've had one bounce up, hit the roof, and fall behind the lens once- it was hot, but not enough to burn me- still, not very nice.

+1 on the ski/motorcross goggles. heck, buy a cheaper pair of (chem) lab goggles that are designed to fit over glasses.

I have had hot brass land between my face and glasses on several occasions. I hate the feeling of wearing two sets frames plus hearing protection clamping down on them. Just got a new set of glasses with slightly larger lens because of this. I have actually burned my face to a point of my girlfriend noticing. She got on my case that day because I was suppose to stay home and clean the house:D .

Remember not to freak out like a little girl an swing your barrel at the guy next to you. I think we all have the experience of shooting next to newbies like this, now I just stand back until they get the jitters out of them. Suck it up and let it burn until the gun is safely on the bench.

I wear glasses and contacts. It just depends on how I feel on any given day. Typically if I am shooting I will wear my glasses + a ballcap. But if I go with my contacts, I usually go sunglasses + ballcap if I'm outdoors or sawflys + ballcap.

My rx glasses and sunglasses are both Oakley with polycarb lens.

My understanding is that pretty much all prescription glasses made today are sufficiently impact-resistant to use for eyepro at the range. But yeah, if your lenses are fashionably small they're not much good.

Yeah, my lenses are polycarbonate but they're only just large enough to cover my eyes, they aren't like the oval ones I used to have.

I never wear both. I either wear either one or the other. I have strangely bad, near-sighted eyes. If I don't wear my prescriptions (but wear regular eye protection), I can see the front sights okay and everything else is way blurry. If I wear my prescriptions, the front sight is blurry but the far targets are okay.

So most of the time I wear regular eye protection and not my prescriptions. But for realism practice, I practice with my prescriptions too, at the range.

Just close your eyes and squeeze!!!

Glad I don't wear glasses. I'm watching to see the suggestions, as my son and oldest daughter do wear them. Their lenses have decreased in diameter as they got older, so I guess I'll have to look at alternatives. My Colt will religiously eject every 5th case to a 1 inch imaginary target in the center of my forehead (on occasion it will draw blood). If I count rounds I will actually flinch after #5 in anticipation. Keep the ideas comin'.

ps...welcome, soup. It seems you have a good head on your shoulders. Oh, and who do you shoot with? Mom? Dad? Other relative? By yourself?

That would be my dad, the man who actually served in the military across the pond in Taiwan as an officer. I might've gone with my mom, but unfortunately even though she agrees with me that gun control is a joke, she is a lot more uneasy about having just a gun in the house than my dad is.

I suggest either Oakleys or Rudy Project sunglasses. Oakleys can take prescription inserts. The Rudy Project glasses can take Rx clip-ons or have the entire lense grounded with your Rx prescription. I plan on getting a pair of the Rudy's and trying that out. I've had the Oakleys and they work well, but the inserts weaken the lens. I've broke them several times just from normal wear. However, Oakley replaced the lens without problems or any cost to me, so that worked out also.

Never heard of Rudy Project until today, they do seem pretty cool. Check out the tactical line of glasses

I have a pair of Rudy's and they work well, espcially with higher Rxs. However their tactical line is nothing more than their regular line with black frames.

Wiley Xs, Oakleys, Ess also have Rx options, with Oakleys being by far the most desirable. I had a pair of ESS glasses with rx inserts and they had a huge distortion with them (looked like a fishbowl), probably due to my high rx. Revision has also come out with sawfly glasses with look interesting.

I use a pair of industrial safety glasses. I’ve yet to find any dedicated shooting glasses that will fit over my prescription eyeware. It’s rather annoying.

what I do is put in contacts and then wear regular eye protection (Silencio I think is the brand)

I just wear my glasses. Once someone at Angela's range made me buy additional eye protection otherwise they wouldn't let me shoot but only once the other times the're fine with me just wearing my glasses.

I use DeCot Hy-Wyd's. I don't need a correction for distance, just short arms. My right lens has an oversize bifocal in the upper inside corner. I tilt my head down a bit and the front sight is in focus.

They also make them in prescription lenses. Interchangeable lenses and lots of colors. My frames have the adjustable nose bridge so when I shoot a red dot and don't need the correction, I can put it up out of the way and use the plano part of the lens.

The sportglasses product looks pretty good. One other thing about the Rudys that put them at the top of the list for me. The lens can be swapped out very easily, so you can have different sets of lenses for different lighting conditions.

Outdoors I wear prescription sunglasses, which are quite large. Indoors I wear my usual glasses with some chemistry lab goggles (impact rated).

I'm actually looking into the ESS ICE line. They seem very affordable, plus they accept prescription lenses which I can get my optomotrist to fit.

1) Get contacts or LASIK.

2) Get a pair of Oakleys with prescription lenses. You can get them in a wide variety of frame/lens styles and colors. Oakleys are some of the highest-quality, highest-impact rated lenses on the market, and everyone should be wearing them or a similar quality lens while shooting anyway.

I wear a set of Oakley M Frames or Monster Dogs. The Monster Dogs are pretty affordable frames at under 100 bucks. All you need to do is find an Oakely authorized dealer and have the scripted. Its the best sub $300 pair of eye protection/glasses that I have ever spent the dough on.

I've always liked Oakleys, because they can grind my prescription right into the lense, so it doesn't need inserts.

However, I'm going to look into those Rudy Project glasses, because it could be handy to be able to remove the sunglasses lense, and still wear the RX clip-in (like when I'm riding my motorcycle, wearing a helmet with visor). Or, remove the RX clip-in and just wear the shades.

Whats the cheapest option :D

I need protection that covers my glasses or cheap prescription glasses that look/fit decently.

I don't want to look like a fool at the range with those swat style tactical goggles. Which seem to be the most affordable on ebay designed for airsofters.... :( :(

Lab goggles run about $4.50. If you get the adjustible ones they'll be very comfy over glasses. You will, however, look like a dork.

I just don't know what to do :(
Either I wear cheap protection that barely fits over my glasses, buy lab glasses, buy airsoft goggles.... or buy a good fitting pair of prescription shooting glasses.

The cheaper options make me look like a dork :( and I can't afford the expensive ones. I don't know, guess i'll wear my glasses real close to my face.

Yup, I'm Taiwanese (not aboriginie Taiwanese though), born in America. If it weren't for the whole Communist Revolution, I'd be in China governing something. Apparently I have noble blood in Pre-communist Chinese standards, but I'm still proud of being an American and standing with its values.
