View Full Version : CA-Legal Sub-Compact Automatics?

Does anyone know of a sub-compact pistol that can be legally purchased new? I had my eye on a Ruger LCP and was very saddened to find out that it was not California legal. I started checking other options out and can't seem to find one. Would I be able to get one through a PPT if it was an older gun, pre-dating then DOJ list? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Glock 26, Springfield XD9 sub-compact, etc. You've got choices!

These and the Glock 27 and S&W M&P 40c.

How small are you wanting andrew? I ask because the Glocks and SA and S&W mentioned in my post and the one previous are generally considered big in the world of small guns, but they are classified as sub compacts.

I also like the looks of the 1911 with the 3" barrel, forgot what the name of it was.

Definitely looking for a smaller sub compact. About the size of the LCP. Anyone know if it's in the plans to make the LCP CA legal? Or is it too small to add the features necessary for the DOJ to give the approval?

Bersa thunder is fairly small pistol. They actually have a ccw model as well, though. Everything is abbreviated, smoothed and rounded to aid in comfortable carry, as well as snag-free presentation from concealment.

Check out bersa's website or bersatalk for more info.

You can get an LCP. Theyre regularly for sale in the CG classifieds, but you pay $500 instead of $300-$400.

The newest design Kahr 380 is supposed to be CA legal and available in November-ish.

It really is sad that the smaller pocket autos are not for sale here in CA unless used.

Glock 33 which is chambered in .357sig. You can swap in a factory Glock 27 barrel to shoot .40s&w or a conversion barrel to shoot 9mm! 3 calibers in one sub-compact handgun! You can use the same magazine, but they recommend you use specific for each caliber.

Really like my Springfield XD40SC. Great size for .40 cal and you can get extended mags for fuller length grip.

The LCP is a really small gun and not near as large as the "subcompacts" such as the XDc pistols or even the baby glocks. These are two different class pistols and I think the OP's intention is for something small like the LCP but on the roster.

I have the LCP and it's just great. It fits inside the pocket and is light so you don't feel it. If I can find a PF9 I might sell one of my LCP's but even then I might not want to.

The trigger on the LCP is long but smooth and it doesn't gerk the gun when it breaks. I can shoot tight 2-3" groups off hand at 7-8 yards. Recoil for me is mild and I enjoy shooting it.

I found that other larger guns such as the Beretta Cheetah, Walther PPK, Sig P230 have more felt recoil than the LCP. Another 380 that has mild recoil are the Colt Mustangs. The are heavier than the LCP but still pocket size and they are very cool. The Sig P238 is basically a Colt Mustang.

All of these little 380's eventually show up for sale on the used market so don't think too much about them not being on the roster.
