Restrepo, a documentary about a fire base located in the Korengal valley...the middle of taliban territory.

Here is more info...the movie is very good. Its a doc, not a hollywood ari brushed artwork like hurt locker. This thing is raw footage, ambushes, killings...its nasty.

Its due out December 1 at Netflix...check it out.

Here are some more theaters its playing at. This is not some slick hollywood movie with some crazy script, its real life, and it really has you scratching your head as you leave the place. Real guys get killed, real guys kill taliban, and real guys weep in mourning and in joy...a very heavy movie for sure.

I saw this movie a few weeks ago at Landmark Theater in Los Angeles. Awesome movie. Shows you what real war is like without making it "Hollywood"

I think the part I liked best was when after all the shti they had been through they still could find enough cheer to mosh with a good song.

The part I didn't like was the fact the LT seemed to be an idiot at times, and the obvious fact the Afgannies had no love for our presences and the goals we have and that they have are in two totally different universes.

I say the heck with the whole lot of 'em - neku em...and throw Iran and Iraq on the fire while we are at it.

I think you mean the Captain. Yea, one of the last scenes showed him giving his guys a moto speech and at the end for a moment of silence you could see a couple of them not really into the whole thing.

Great documentary, that terrain looks killer. Those guys climbed that with hundred pounds of gear and could still smoke a bunch of cigarettes. Really shows what most of America doesn't get to see in the news.

I kinda liked the Captain. He may not have been the best speaker, but I certainly admired his determination, and I especially liked the way he gave/repeated a certain command toward the middle. (I don't wanna ruin anything for someone who hasn't seen it)

I liked him too, but I also think he was not cut out to be a community liason officer. Not that we should even be in the community building business with partners who had no desire to build communities.

He was one tough dude that is for sure.

Every American needs to see this movie. Seen it twice now, during the SF Film Festival back in April and again about a month ago. Excellent film that really slaps you in the face about the reality of war.

Ur right, every American should see this movie but they won't because they don't like reality...real reality, not like survivors the "reality" show.

I can't believe the muted response to this thread, its very disappointing, especially for a supposed rah rah hoorah bunch like calguns...

At the end it showed the Cows head being cut off, that must have where they got the fresh Cow:eek: Movie was excellent!!! Would see it again, I have been following Outpost Films movies on the 'net and these are the movies we should be watching not the stupid glorified Hollywood films that are 9/10 junk.

I know this is off topic but when you slaughter a cow don't you want to age the meat a while to let it break down a bit to get softer?

KillZone45
07-27-2010, 9:45 PM
Not that I am aware of, buttttttt in fine steakhouses they age the meat and it is marbeled, makes it better but I am pretty sure it is fine, especially in their situation. And those village elders were crazy $500 for that cow in BFE? Glad that CO told them to pound sand.

You think they really gave a crap about money for the cow? I'd bet they are doing recon, any money they "get" is a bonus.

You could be correct, but that $500 could have been used to buy another cow or used to buy weapons for the Taliban. But now that I think about it to them a Cow is very important, provides all sorts of stuff for them, so yeah I would say that Cow was important to them.

bubbapug1
07-28-2010, 5:23 PM
Those boys in the hills measure their wealth based on how many cows they own, so a cow is a big deal. I'm not sure what a cow sells for here, but the price seemed a bit steep, but than again, everyone rips off the government if they can...especially foreigners.

This sounds like 9th ROTA (9th Company), a RUSSIAN film about russian conscripts... at a firebase.... in Mujahadeen country (same folks, different branding).

While not a documentary, 9th company does retell the story of one of the last battles of the Soviet campaign in Afghanistan....

My reaction to this movie was a little different. I took my buddy to go see this because he was thinking about joining also and I wanted to make sure he knew what he was getting into.

After the movie we were both actually more psyched about joining. The guys were well supplied, had plenty of air support and seemed to only take like 3 serious casualties the whole year they were there.

Maybe its just my generation and the effects of the economy, but hanging out with your friends, working out and causing some destruction seems better than our current habits and options. For most of my friends, even the educated ones, the options seem to be work an unsatisfying job, drink yourself into rehab, or end up in jail for making stupid choices out of frustration. The military at least seems more productive even if you lose some buddies, which is the nature of the job.

Overall the movie was amazing and a serious eye opener, I defintiely reccomend seeing it.

For those with Time Warner cable. I'm in OC and was surprised to see this offered as an HD On Demand video choice on the Natl Geo HD channel.

I don't subscribe to the option package that includes Natl Geo, so I normally cannot see their programs, but for some reason last night this was available for free ... who knows maybe for Veteran's Day ?? I didn't have time last night so hopefully I can see it tonight or this weekend.

Cheers !
