View Full Version : How many in your collection?

23 Blast

Just need a number (yes including those lost in tragic boating accidents), not looking for types, how long it took you to acquire that number, or whether your collection regularly expands and contracts (like mine does). I'm just trying to gauge a median number of guns owned by typical calgunners.

My number is 22

They still all fit in one medium sized gun safe. Mostly.

I'm curious why you ask. Seems like this question pops up from time to time and I never understand why it's asked.

Is it a keeping up with the Jonses thing? Want to see where you stand in the race to the most toys? Want data ammo for a domestic spending discussion?

"See honey, lots of guys have more than 5 guns and they still get to buy more!"

(Paraphrased from an actual discussion that I was part of.)

CALiberal,

No particular reason other than simple curiosity. I personally know a couple of people whose collections would put many museums to shame, but far more who own a single gun (and never go shooting). I would imagine that most denizens of a websiteliene this would be closer to the former than the latter in terms of their level of gun enthusiasm, which is why I wanted to know what the average number was. A dozen? Two dozen? Three? Ten? Just wondering.

I didn't realize such a question would raise hackles and receive cryptic, non-answers like the tried and true "less than I want but more than I need."

Sheesh.

I've got three right now and probably won't be buying sometime soon. A .45, a 9 mil and a .44 mag has satisfied my urge for the time being:)

Hey 23Blast

Many CalGun folk are intensely aware of the real potential for "jack booted thugs" serving no knock warrants on their front doors and terrorizing their families. It actually does happen from time to time. This is a public forum and I would not be surprised if a couple of different levels of law enforcement keep an eye on it from time to time. You are not truly anonymous here. So some of your replies do have a suspicious tone. Many folks do not want to call attention to the size of their gun collection.

No one wants to see their gun collection described by the newspapers as an "Arsenal."

It gets to feeling pretty comfortable and safe here online but we are not alone and not private.

And then there is the whole "criminals looking for big gun collections" issue. Or anti-gun busy bodies trying to get crazy quotes or statistics to argue for new gun laws.

I too had innocent curiosity about how many guns others have. But it turns out that for many it's as intimate a question as "How often do you and your wife have sex?"

My arsenal has 18 pieces at present. But I have great plans for the future.

Can you say "Colt Python?" Sure you can.

And just how many firearms make up a plethora, jefe?

I have one that lives in a "free state" outside of California, because my registration for it arrived at the DOJ a day late.

I used to have two others, but they were stolen from the house in 2008, and the police have failed to recover and return them - despite the fact that they were registered (and that is always the justification given for registration).

I may or may not have others, but those three are all I'm going to commit to in public - at least until I've seen what the DOJ says I have.

So you have an "arsenal," eh? I'm sure BATFE has a huge dossier on you and your terrorist activities (such as regular range visits for training) and "building of explosive devices (reloading)! :D

yeah, I realize it can be a sensitive and personal question, but - as it's the Internet, and not sworn testimony, one can simply not respond, no?

Colt Python - ooooh such a beautiful sounding phrase! :D

Does two boxes (1,000 rounds) of .22LR still qualify as an "arsenal"? ;)

In my expert/professional opinion (retired military, "armorer" was among my job titles - which makes me much more of an expert than any group of legislators), if you can't outfit a line company of militia members, it can't be an "arsenal", because that's barely an arms room/armory.

I guess that, at a stretch, a reloading bench could be described as an "arsenal", because
ammunition is manufactured there.

Noun 1. arsenalarsenal - all the weapons and equipment that a country has
armory, armoury
armament - weaponry used by military or naval force
2. arsenal - a military structure where arms and ammunition and other military equipment are stored and training is given in the use of arms
armory, armoury
military installation - any facility servicing military forces
armed forces, armed services, military, military machine, war machine - the military forces of a nation; "their military is the largest in the region"; "the military machine is the same one we faced in 1991 but now it is weaker"
3. arsenal - a place where arms are manufactured
armory, armoury
foundry, metalworks - factory where metal castings are produced
Based on WordNet 3.0, Farlex clipart collection. 2003-2008 Princeton University, Farlex Inc.

Oh, wait - it's just a SCARY word being misused by the rights-deniers and their stooges in the media to try to influence the sheeple to allow them to take away our "Evil" liberty teeth, and disarm the citizenry, so that we may become their slaves.

I said 22 in my OP. Upon taking inventory last night, I realized the number had grown to 24!

Gotta start keeping those boy guns away from the girl guns. :D

well, I suppose 22 is still the technically correct number since two of them don't qualify as a "firearm" under the BATFE definitions (black powder and C&R older than 1896 - FTW!)

looks like my collection may undergo either an expansion or contraction pretty soon here....

More that I need, not as many as I want.

Not as many as I want. "Need" is a judgmental term, and who is to say what I will or will not potentially need at any point in the future. If you have one fireamr in every possible caliber, you may not "need" any more - until something breaks, and you "need" a replacement.

What is the saying? "Two is one, one is none."
