I've got a Remington 511 Scoremaster, .22, and the safety doesn't work. There may be a few other problems as well. I'd like to find a smith experienced on Remingtons, rimfires, or both. I do not want someone who has read some articles, owns a hacksaw, and feels pretty good about himself.

Sacramento County is best, but I'll also be happy with El Dorado, Amador, Sutter, Yolo, Yuba, or Placer-because I do not put my trust into shipping a gun in the Golden State. Butte, San Joaquin, Calavaras, or Nevada Counties are OK if the guy is a smithing genius.

Thanks!

I know it's not exaclty what you asked about, but Sierra Gun Supply in Auburn did a great job rebuilding my Browning auto shotty. They fabricated a new part and the bill was very reasonable. It was a basket case when I took it to them. He said it would be $35 for a teardown, cleaning and rebuild. The new part was $70ish with no additional charge beyond the original teardown.

Hope this helps.

I had him do a trigger job on my 1911. Did a awesome job. He does specialize in rifles. I pretty sure he could help you out. Give him a call.

Try J&G guns/Gunsmithing out in Roseville. If they don't know how to fix it they'll tell you instead of trying surgery on it. Jack Huntington out in Grass Valley is very good as well but you'll end up waiting as he has a very good reputation. Good luck.

I have had 2 bad experiences with J&G and would say Stay Away. As for Sierra. I know their gunsmith and he is very good.

1SGMAT,

Could you elaborate on "bad experiences"?

I lost the pin that holds the hammer nose to the hammer on my S&W M28. Took it into J&G thinking such a common part I would be on my way in minutes. HA! Not to be.
Had to leave for "repair".OK. A week later I check back. Not done. Another week -still not done.
Another week went in person, was told they were too busy and had shipped it to a gunsmith in OREGON!
and they were not sure when it would return. I then reported it stolen to Placer County Sheriff, met an officer at J&G's store at 625 Vernon St a few days later.
The officer asked the owner to see his "log book"
that accounts for in/out weapons movement.
Entry for mine showed it had never left the shop. The owner stated that this was in error and it was really out of state. The officer said OK this is Tuesday
and could I (the gun owner)come in this friday and pick it up? J&G Owner said sure. While we were there a Roseville city officer was investigating a .45 that was stolen while being repaired....I came on on friday , owner presented bill for $25.00 . I paid cash. Put it in a locked case and left. Not one word was exchanged.
Brownells sell this pin for $1.58 and should not more than a minute or so to install.

Sounds like a horrible experience. Not questioning it at all, but I was very impressed with the service I received and the professional way my job was completed. The next time I went back they flat told me they couldn't do the job for me and sent me elsewhere to get it done which I considered to be a very good mark of character. Glad I didn't have to deal with a situation like that.

1) If you know that this is a $1.58 part that is so quick to install, why didn't you do it yourself?

2) Why didn't you ask for a price & cost estimate before leaving your gun with them?

1.Brownells (That has the $1.58 part) is located in Montezuma,Iowa. I am in Roseville,California. Did not wish to just order one small part. I thought J&G
might have one and indeed would have installed it.
2.Price was not a factor in this problem. At one point
I asked them just to return it unrepaired and thats when they told me it was in Oregon. Sorry that I gave you the impression that price was the problem. That I had to report my gun as stolen to get it back was the main point of my post. Will try to be more clear next time.
